WORN OR DAMAGED KONGS MUST BE REPLACED PROMPTLY TO MAINTAIN SAFE PLAY FOR YOUR PUPPY! If you think your puppy has swallowed a toy fragment (for example, if the toy was damaged and you cannot find every piece larger than a food nugget) promptly inform your veterinarian. NOTE: If your puppy destroys a Puppy Kong in a short period of time, it is probably too small. We recommend upsizing to a larger Puppy Kong. Not for unsupervised play. Precautions: Puppy Kong should not be given to puppies before they are weaned. If you have a multiple dog home, take extra care to keep large dogs away from smaller dogs’ toys.

Woman At D.C. March Disappointed Her Protest Gear From The 1960s Is Relevant Today

As protesters across the globe marched in support of women’s rights on Saturday, one woman expressed disbelief that such demonstrations are still necessary in 2017.

Mary Rivers, who flew from Champaign, Illinois, to walk in the Women’s March on Washington, said she is disappointed that she still has to fight for women’s rights.

“I am really sorry that I am still protesting this stuff,” she told The Huffington Post’s Alex Berg.

Rivers wore several pins during the march, one of which read “silence is the violence of complicity” and another that showed an equality symbol.

“That’s from 1960,” she said. “I had to dig it out because it’s relevant again ― and I’m really, really sorry that it’s relevant again.”

Rivers said her biggest issues of concern include keeping the Affordable Care Act intact, fighting climate change and the fact that “a man who likes to tweet has his finger on the nuclear button.” She added that she hopes the march sends an important message to Republican lawmakers whose promises to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood would have serious implications for women.

“[Republican Congress members should] look at the number of people who are out here today who are saying we don’t like this and that they realize that they’ve got a constituency, a huge constituency, that they need to be paying attention to,” she said.

9 Things Passionate People Do Differently

2017-01-19-1484866370-6450458-9ThingsPassionatePeopleDoDifferentlyHP.jpeg

Do you have enough passion in your life? Passion is the difference between playing the piano and being a pianist; it’s who you are, not just what you do. Passion makes you leap out of bed in the morning, eager to start your day.

Dr. Robert Vallerand at the University of Quebec has studied passion more than anyone, and he asserts that passion is self-defining. According to Vallerand, “Passion is a strong inclination towards a self-defining activity that people love, that they consider important, and in which they devote significant amounts of time and energy.”

“Passion is the genesis of genius.” – Galileo

It’s important to note that passion doesn’t require expertise–although there is a correlation, it’s not a given. Vallerand and two other researchers studied 187 musicians and found that those who focused on perfecting their performance–what Vallerand calls “mastery–developed a higher level of expertise than those who focused on merely being better than other musicians. If passion defines you, it makes sense that your personal best will be about you and no one else.

So what does passion look and feel like? A great way to understand passion is to consider what makes passionate people different from everybody else.

1. Passionate people are obsessed.
Put simply, passionate people are obsessed with their muse, and I don’t mean that in an unhealthy OCD sort of way. I’m talking about a positive, healthy obsession, the kind that inspired the quote, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” No matter what else is going on, their thoughts keep returning to their passion. Not because they feel burdened and pressured by it, but because they’re just so dang excited about it. They’re obsessed with their muse because it inspires them and makes them happy.

2. They don’t waste time. You won’t find passionate people wandering around a park all afternoon playing Pokemon Go. They don’t have time to be bothered with things that don’t matter or things that just kill time. They devote every minute available to their passion, and it’s not a sacrifice, because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

3. They’re optimistic. Passionate people are always focused on what can be rather than what is. They’re always chasing their next goal with the unwavering belief that they’ll achieve it. You know how it feels when you’re looking forward to a really special event? Passionate people feel like that every day.

4. They’re early risers.
Passionate people are far too eager to dive into their days to sleep in. It’s not that they don’t like to sleep; they’d just much rather be pursuing their passion. When the rooster crows, their minds are flooded with ideas and excitement for the day ahead.

5. They’re willing to take big risks.
How much you want something is reflected in how much you’re willing to risk. Nobody is going to lay it all on the line for something they’re only mildly interested in. Passionate people, on the other hand, are willing to risk it all.

6. They only have one speed–full tilt.
Passionate people don’t do anything half-heartedly. If they’re going, they’re going full tilt until they cross the finish line or crash. If they’re relaxed and still, they’re relaxed and still. There’s no in between.

7. They talk about their passions all the time.
Again, we’re talking about people whose passions are inseparable from who they are, and you couldn’t form much of a relationship with them if they couldn’t be real about who they are, right? It’s not that they don’t understand that you don’t share their obsession; they just can’t help themselves. If they acted differently, they’d be playing a role rather than being authentic.

8. They’re highly excitable.
You know those people who probably wouldn’t get excited if an alien spaceship landed in their front yard? Yeah, that’s not how passionate people operate. It’s not that they’re never calm, or even bored. It’s just that it takes less to get them excited, so they get excited more frequently and stay excited longer. One theory is that they devote their energy to just one or two things, so they make more progress, and that momentum fuels their excitement.

9. They’re all about their work.
Passionate people don’t worry about work/life balance. Their work is who they are, and there’s no separating the two. It’s what they breathe, live, and eat, so there’s no such thing as leaving it at the office. Asking them to do that is tantamount to asking them to deny who they are. And they’re OK with that because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

Bringing It All Together

Now that you know what separates passionate people from everybody else, do you think you have enough passion in your life?

Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The Women Who Are Running To Protest Trump Are Tapping Into History

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s electoral victory, Alison Désir, the founder of a community running organization in New York City called Harlem Run, turned her frustration into political action.

Désir’s remedy: a four-woman, 240-mile relay, beginning in Harlem, New York City, on Jan. 16 and ending in Washington, D.C., on the day of Trump’s inauguration. The race was designed to raise money and awareness for Planned Parenthood in honor of women. As of Jan. 20, the (Four Women) Run For ALL Women GoFundMe page had raised more than $ 89,000 ― more than twice their goal ― to give women access to cancer screenings and preventive care, even if Planned Parenthood is defunded this year.

Though Four Women are running specifically in opposition to Trump, they are participating in a legacy of people who run in protest or with advocacy in mind.

Protest and advocacy runs range from sponsored marathons to singular, public displays of support, such as Terry Fox’s famous 143-day marathon for cancer research or the recent 2,000-mile relay run from North Dakota to Washington, D.C. to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Désir’s activist relay is part of a larger tradition of running as a form of protest. Women in particular have a history of using long-distance running to call attention to their fight for equality. In fact, just the act of running while female used to be protest enough.

When Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb’s 1966 Boston Marathon entry was rejected by the Boston Athletic Association because women were neither allowed to participate, nor “physiologically able” to compete, she ignored her denial letter.

Instead, she dressed in her brother’s clothing, hid her hair under a hooded sweatshirt, and joined the race without a bib.

Gibb would go on to prove her detractors at the Boston Athletic Association wrong. She finished in the top third of the pack.

“Last week a tidy-looking and pretty 23-year-old blonde [had] a performance that should do much to phase out the old-fashioned notion that a female is too frail for distance running,” Sports Illustrated wrote at the time.

Her protest run also inspired other women to participate, most memorably at that time 20-year-old Kathy Switzer, who officially entered the Boston marathon under the non-gender specific name “K.V. Switzer” the following year. Remarkable though her physical achievement was, race director Jock Semple tried to tackle Switzer and toss her from the race for entering under false pretenses (as seen in the photo above snapped during the assault). As Switzer writes on her website:

A big man, a huge man, with bared teeth was set to pounce, and before I could react he grabbed my shoulder and flung me back, screaming, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!” Then he swiped down my front, trying to rip off my bib number, just as I leapt backward from him.

The resulting photos transformed Switzer into the face of women’s running and cemented her status as a feminist role model for generations of women.

Six women in New York City built on that activist legacy. When the gun went off at the start of the New York City Marathon in 1972, the women sat down at the starting line and held up signs protesting the Amateur Athletic Union, which required female runners to participate in a “separate but equal” marathon and start the race 10 minutes before the male runners, or on a different starting line.

A photo of the sit-in ran in the New York Times the following Monday.

“It made a huge difference because it happened in New York. After that, the A.A.U. allowed women to run with men,” Nina Kuscsik, one of the protesters, told the Times in 2011. In 1972, Kuscsik became the first woman to officially win the Boston Marathon.

As for Désir, she and the women of (Four Women) Run For ALL Women are carrying what Désir calls the “baton of hope and health” into Washington Friday, then joining the Women’s March on Saturday, in honor of the rights of women everywhere.

In doing so, they’re building on the legacies of Gibb, Switzer and Kucsik.

“There will be four of us running, but we’ll be running for all of us,” Désir wrote on her GoFundMe page.

Watch A Trump Supporter And A Protester Have A Civil Conversation On Inauguration Day

WASHINGTON ― It’s not all threats of repression and rock-throwing in D.C. today.

Away from the pomp and circumstance of Inauguration Day activities, supporters and opponents of President Donald Trump have been walking down the same streets, choosing between the same downtown food options (Subway or ABP?) and dealing with the rain that began just as Trump started to give his inaugural address.

The Huffington Post chanced upon one unlikely pair at Rawlins Park, a few blocks up from the National Mall.

Cynthia, a Trump fan from McLean, Virginia, has lived near the nation’s capital since President Jimmy Carter took office in 1977. Diego is a high school student from Cambridge, Massachusetts, who worries that Trump is endangering his future.

Each was having trouble understanding the general feelings of people on the other side. How could someone support Trump? How could young people reject him?

They started a calm, respectful dialogue. And they let HuffPost film it.

Watch their conversation above.

Ten Simple and Unexpected Ways to Boost Happiness

What are some small ways to boost happiness in everyday life? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Raj Raghunathan, Professor of marketing and happiness expert at UT Austin, on Quora:

I once surveyed my students to make a list of three small things that make them feel happy after watching this video. Here’s the Top Ten list from that survey:

Note that not all of them will work equally well for you, so you need to figure out which ones work best:

1. Engage in vigorous physical activity.

The next time you need a mood-boost, try this out: go for a long run or play a game of basketball. Now, what counts as a long run for you may be a mere walk in the park for me (it’s more likely to be the reverse), but the point is that the activity needs to be vigorous enough get your heart pumping and your mind distracted from your negative ruminations. If you are like most people, you are unlikely to want to get off your butt if you are feeling down. But, as the Nike slogan says, “Just Do It!” Here’s a fact to get you going: you are guaranteed to feel better after a workout than you felt before it.

2. Hang out with friends.

When we feel down, we typically don’t want to interact with others. This is partly because we don’t want others to see our negative side, but it’s mostly because we don’t think that hanging out with others is really going to help us feel better. I’m not sure where this intuition comes from, but I can tell you that it is wrong: our mood reliably improves after we socialize, especially if the people with whom we socialize are happy and likeable. Similar to how it’s important to overcome the reluctance to exercise, it’s important to overcome the pessimism we feel about the effectiveness of socializing when feeling down.

If you are wondering where and with whom to socialize, just call one of the “favorites” on your smart phone and make a plan to meet. Tell them about what is troubling you to get you started–even a short chat with a close-friend can significantly improve your mood.

3. Consume a moderate amount of alcohol.

I know, I know, I shouldn’t be encouraging people to drink, but what to do? It turns out that when we desperately need a happiness quick-fix, consuming a moderate amount of alcohol can be effective. The key here is to consume just enough to feel a little relaxed. The very process by which alcohol lowers inhibitions can also lower the tendency to worry. In other words, alcohol can temporarily take your mind off things that are causing you to feel negative and thus, can be useful in situations in which our mind is on a “negativity overdrive.” Needless to say, it is important to consume only a moderate amount of alcohol. If you are one of those who can’t stop after two, don’t try this at home or elsewhere!

4. Dress to kill.

As I mentioned in an earlier article, human beings are highly social creatures, which means that we worry a lot about what others think of us. When we believe that others view us positively, we feel good, and when we believe that they view us negatively, we feel bad. So, one way to make yourself feel good is to wear your best clothes and perfume (or cologne, as the case may be) and venture out to your local park or mall. We you look and smell good, or think that you do, you are likely to believe that others view you positively and this will make you feel good.

5. Revisit old (and positive) memories.

Reliving the “good old times” can be a surprisingly effective mood-booster. I say “surprising” because many of us, especially the young among us, rarely engage in reliving fond memories. Curiously, it seems that the more our life has become virtual, the less we are likely to revisit the past. My parents, for example, regularly spend time recalling pleasant past memories, and also routinely pore over the “family album” to relive past memories. Our existence in the virtual world, e.g., on social media websites, should, if anything, allow us to revisit our past even more effectively, given that many of our cherished memories and experiences are merely a “click away”.

A note of caution, however, if you are looking to the Internet to revisit the past: stay away from those who make you feel inferior. That is, stay away from people who are into the game of “keeping up with the joneses”–you know, the ones who frequently post pictures from their vacation in Spain, or engage in name-dropping. Findings show that such “friends” bring you down.

6. Watch a funny or touching video.

Some people prefer funny videos and others prefer heart-warming ones. Regardless, findings show is that even a short exposure to a positive video can significantly boost happiness. (There’s a reason why one of the most popular ways to manipulate mood in experiments is to have participants watch a video.) Here are links to two funny and two touching videos. (Note: the last one is relatively long, at about 15 minutes, but it is well worth it!)

Funny videos:

Heart-warming videos:

7. Talk to an older relative.

It’s a bit of a pity that, in many “new” cultures (like the US), the elderly aren’t as respected as they are older cultures (like China or India). Think about it: as you grow older, you get physically weak and mentally less nimble. The one saving grace could have been that you gain in respect. Without it, growing old seems to have no positives. No wonder the US is so “youth crazy”!

As findings on hyperopia show, the elderly do deserve our respect because they have “been there, done that.” They thus have many valuable lessons to share. In particular, no one can put things in perspective like the elderly can. Talking to them will help you discern the important from the merely urgent and will also help you not sweat the small stuff.

8. Tick something off your “to do” list.

Have you ever written down something on your things to do list just so that you can have the pleasure of scratching it out? Well, turns out you are not alone. Findings show that people derive an “efficacy boost” by accomplishing goals and this can, in turn, make them feel good. If you don’t have a things to do list or can’t think of something to write on it to scratch off, don’t worry. Just do something simple and easy, like depositing a check or washing a cup, and you’ll be on your way to feeling good.

9. Do a small act of kindness.

Perhaps the most powerful determinant of how we feel is the story we tell ourselves about who we are. The more we believe that we are efficacious and successful, the better we feel–which is why tip #8 (ticking something off your list) works. Another story you can tell yourself is that a large-hearted, generous person. One way to convince yourself of this story is to act like a large-hearted and generous person. This doesn’t mean that you break your bank to serve someone; all you need to do is to perform a small act of kindness such as, rescuing a kitten from a tree, or giving left-over food to a homeless person. Even merely smiling or saying “good morning!” to someone can pick your mood up.

10. Venture into nature.

Most urbanites don’t recognize it, but human beings are biophiles, that is, we love being out in nature. I take my MBA students on a two day retreat each year to a place out in the boonies. We hike up a hill and swim in the river and do various other “nature-oriented” things. Before going on the trip, most of my students are skeptical that being out in nature is going to do anything good, but many come away making a pledge that they will get out more in nature in the future. (I’m not sure if they actually make good on their pledge, but the pledge is good enough for me.) Turns out you don’t need to go on a two day retreat to reap the benefits of being out in nature: even a short hike or a picnic in a park can help you feel good.

What Will You Do If Donald Trump Deports Me?

Video streaming tools like Facebook LIVE will help expose and document Donald Trump’s mass deportation tactics (Art by: Laura McInerney | @itwaspluto)

We are just days until Donald Trump is sworn in as our next president and the fate of hundreds of thousands of young aspiring Americans who have been given the opportunity to pursue their educationand contribute to our nation’s workforce through an immigration program known as DACA is still uncertain.

Launched by President Barack Obama in 2012, DACA  —  Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals  —  has temporarily shielded nearly a million young immigrants from deportation and provided them an opportunity to work, study and give back to the only country most of them call home. Put simply, DACA has been a resounding success economically, educationally and socially.

Donald Trump ran for President as one of the most toxic and divisive candidates in our country’s history. He began his campaign by slandering Mexicans as rapists and criminals and called for mass deportation of all undocumented immigrants regardless of how long they’ve been here and regardless of whether their families would be uprooted and destroyed.

But Donald Trump didn’t stop there. He peppered his vicious campaign rhetoric with a call for a ban on all Muslims seeking to enter the U.S., bigoted attacks on a federal judge of Mexican ancestry and repeated verbal assaults on Gold Star parents of a fallen Muslim American soldier.

It would be naive to believe that Donald Trump would back off his anti-immigrant positions in just a matter of hours before his inauguration.

Trump promised his supporters he’d begin implementing his anti-immigrant vision for America on day one of his administration  —  including scrapping DACA.

In the days and weeks since the election Trump, perhaps in response to the bipartisan pushback against deporting DREAMERs, made a vague promise to “work something out” for DACA immigrants. But he was not specific. We still have no idea what he’ll actually do once he takes the oath of office.

It would be naive to believe that Donald Trump would back off his anti-immigrant positions in just a matter of hours before his inauguration. So the president-elect’s threats have forced me to take every precaution against his imminent mass-deportation policies.

If you are an ally, a friend, or a decent human being who understands that immigrants and refugees work hard, play by the rules and are proud aspiring Americans, then read this guide. I wrote it for the day that you witness the deportation of one of the eleven million undocumented immigrants in the United States.

First, show the world what my deportation looks like.

The world must witness his draconian immigration enforcement tactics firsthand (Art by Laura McInerney | @itwaspluto)

I became politically active following my high school graduation in 2007. I discovered that I would not be able to obtain in-state tuition or any form of scholarship due to my immigration status. At the time I was scared of sharing my story publicly. But I knew that the only way to defend and advocate for myself and other immigrants was to speak up.

I shed my fears in 2009. That is when I decided to share my immigration story across digital platforms like Facebook and Twitter; to highlight the plight of undocumented immigrants like myself. I was fearless and determined. I aggressively advocated for immigrant rights with the firm belief that good and decent Americans across the country would fight my deportation if they heard my story; if they met and knew me as an person.

If we are to resist Donald Trump’s deportation force, then the world must witness his draconian immigration enforcement tactics firsthand.

Now in 2017, as I prepare for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, I am ready for the worst  —  including an attempt by federal immigration enforcement agents to take me away from my home in the United States.

My hope is that you, as a friend, advocate, or reader, will use online broadcasting tools like Facebook LIVE to show your friends, families, and community what Donald Trump’s mass deportation machine looks like.

True, recording a deportation will be uncomfortable, difficult, and terrifying. Yet, if we are to resist Donald Trump’s deportation force, then the world must witness his draconian immigration enforcement tactics firsthand.

Using your phone, tablet, or computer to record ICE attempting to deport hard-working immigrants in your community will help expose the ugly reality of deportation. It will show, first hand, how far Donald Trump is willing to go to rip apart immigrant families. Check out the step-by-step guide below to learn how to use Facebook LIVE to fight against deportations.

Second, if I am arrested by federal immigration agents contact my friends, family and attorney as soon as possible.

Commit to having these tough conversations with your friends and family members who are undocumented. (Art by Manuela Karim | @guavavenezolana)

You can help stop my deportation by immediately notifying my friends, family and attorney of what has happened.

Whether you have witnessed my deportation, or have heard of it, you should get ahold of those closest to me, tell them what you saw and find out what actions are going to be taken to prevent my removal from the country.

How do you do that? It’s easy. The next time we meet ask me about who you should contact if I get arrested by immigration agents, what steps you should take, and what you should do to fight my deportation.

As David Leopold, former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, shared with me earlier this week:

For the next four years the protection of immigrants’ rights will fall to communities, neighborhoods, families and individuals. It will be incumbent upon all of us to personally stand up for and defend the rights of all Americans, documented and undocumented alike.

Your voice, telephone calls, and advocacy will be crucial to ensure that immigrants like are protected from Donald Trump’s mean spirited anti-immigrant agenda. That’s why I ask you to commit to having these tough conversations with your friends and family members who are undocumented.

It’s critical that you have a plan to respond to Trump’s deportation force.

Third, If I am deported then I hope you will take my place and advocate for immigrants and refugees.

Local organizing is how we resist and defend our communities from Donald Trump’s dark vision of America. (Art by Ciriac Alvarez | @ciriacisbeth)

In the end it comes down to each one of us. The fight against Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant policies depends on our communities.

Right now, anti-immigrant restrictionists across the country feel empowered by Donald Trump’s victory last November. They think that they can simply destroy all the progress we’ve made toward immigration reform over the past decade, which is why we must prove them wrong.

Your advocacy for immigrants and refugees is needed in your communities now more than ever.

State and local organizations that work on immigration and refugee-related issues will need new, strong and determined voices to help defend the values of diversity and inclusion that we all cherish.

Your advocacy for immigrants and refugees is needed in your communities now more than ever. That means calling your elected officials at all levels of government to voice concerns and advocate for pro-migrant policies and legislation at all levels of government. Understand, Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant attack won’t just come from the White House or Congress — it will come from the local government institutions that some of us often take for granted.

So please take the time to get to know not only your U.S. Representatives and Senators; but your state legislators and city council members, as they will be the officials you lobby directly throughout the next four years.

Also, check out a list of state and local immigration advocacy organizations via United We Dream and Reform Immigration for America.

You can’t commit time to another organization? No problem. Then please consider donating money to the organizations listed above and become familiar with pro-migrant petitions that are published on platforms likeMoveOn.org.

This is how we resist and defend our communities from Donald Trump’s dark vision of America; by becoming active and taking action every single time injustice presents itself. Speak to your local elected officials, attend their town hall meetings, get involved in a local advocacy organizations, sign petitions, make phone calls, and go door to door.

If Donald Trump is successful in deporting my family and me, then it will be up to you to continue my work on behalf of immigrants all across the country. It won’t be easy; immigration advocacy is certainly complex and difficult. But it is one of the most rewarding and profound causes you could ever become a part of.

That I can promise you.

This is my emergency plan in case Donald Trump decides to deport me, my family, or any of the eleven million undocumented immigrants across the country.

Please commit yourself to becoming informed on immigration issues, asking hard questions, and learning how to fight back against anti-immigrant legislation and deportations. Knowledge is power — and you can learn about cutting edge immigration issues and how they affect our nation from well respected organizations like the American Immigration Council and The Center for American Progress. Our communities are going to need all of the help they can get.

I’ll fight until the moment Donald Trump forcibly removes me from this country.

I am not sure what my future looks like in this country. All I can tell you with certainty is that I will keep fighting for immigrants’ rights and against injustice everywhere. And I’ll fight until the moment Donald Trump forcibly removes me from this country.

If you take away one thing from this post, then please let it be that deportations don’t just hurt immigrants and their families. They hurt our communities and our nation.

Immigrant families are American families; there is no question about that. That is why I choose to do this work, and hopefully the reason that encourages you to join me in this epic struggle.

Tearjerking Video Shows Mom Feeling Her Babies Kick Inside Her Surrogate

An emotional video from Huggies is showcasing a product that has the power to truly touch parents’ lives.

The video features Sharde, a woman who is unable to carry a baby due to her battle with cancer. But thanks to the selflessness of her friend Antoinette, Sharde and her husband Jake are expecting twin daughters via surrogate.

As a five-year cancer survivor, the mom-to-be doesn’t take anything for granted and although she is grateful and excited to welcome her babies, Sharde longs for some of the most precious aspects of pregnancy.

“To feel them and have them move inside me and feel a kick ― that’s something I”ll never be able to experience,” she explains.

That’s where Huggies comes in. The company gave Sharde and Antoinette the Huggies Baby Belt ― a wrap-around belly band which allows the mom to feel her babies’ movements and kicks along with her surrogate. Originally developed for dads, the belt clearly has an even broader use.

Though the belt is not available in stores, a Huggies team travels around the world to share it with families in special situations. As Sharde’s video shows, the experience can be very emotional.

In honor of Sharde’s story and National Hugging Day on Jan. 21, Huggies pledged to donate $ 1 to its “No Baby Unhugged” program, which offers grants to hospital hugging programs for preemies in the NICU.

Because baby-hugging is a cause we can all get behind.

The Dragon’s Gold

The Dragon’s Gold

Long ago, in the time of dragons, there lived a knight in rusty armor, a dragon with a bad cough, and a damsel in distress who didn’t want to be rescued. Sir Gilford of the Sitwell clan was lonely and bullied as a foster child. Now he’s a young knight seeking to earn the clan’s respect. When Lady Brianna is kidnapped by the terrible Neales and the Sitwells can’t pay the ransom, Gilford volunteers to win treasure from a ferocious dragon that lives in the mountains. Gilford polishes his rusty armor and rides off to Dragon’s Land on his trusty steed, Adalard, whose name means “nobly brave.” When they reach the dragon’s cave, Adalard runs off. He’s often frightened by butterflies, and the fire-breathing creature is too much like a HUGE butterfly. So Gilford has no choice but to confront the dragon on foot. On his belly, actually, as he trips on his loosened armor and falls flat in the dirt. The dragon, coughing on smoke and flames, agrees to help Gilford, but won’t give him gold just for the asking. Gilford must win it. First, he must rescue Brianna. Only she doesn’t want to be rescued; she wants to be ransomed like any other respectable captive. Then the dragon asks Gilford to bring city goods to the countryside and food into the city. He arranges a trade between farmers who need shoes and a cobbler with many children to feed. But the Sitwells take over and somehow lose all the food and all the shoes. Nobody gets what they want, and everybody blames Gilford. The Neales and Tisbees, the other two noble clans in the kingdom, hear of Gilford’s quest for gold. Wanting dragon’s treasure for themselves, the Tisbees try to capture Gilford several times, and the Neales do kidnap Sir Elbert Sitwell. Then all three clans build bridges, believing that the first one finished will win the gold. These projects fail, too. Gilford is blamed, and now half of the kingdom is angry with him. He comes up with yet another plan to help the kingdom, but can’t handle it all by himself. Unfor

We Need Millennial Mojo

Co-Authored by: Valerie Young, JD, Outreach director for CPS’s Caring Economy Campaign. Valerie’s work appears extensively in social media, @WomanInDC on Twitter, Your (Wo)Man in Washington on Facebook, and blogging for Mom-mentum.org. She also has written for The Shriver Report, Brain/Child Magazine, and is frequently featured on BlogHer.com as well as the CPS and CEC blogs.

Millennials now make up the biggest age group in the US workforce. Those from age 18 to 35 outnumber boomers as the “largest living generation” according to US News & World Report. They have their own ideas about when, where, how, and how much to work and parent. But because business and government policies based on old cultural expectations about gender and work haven’t kept up with decades of social change, there’s a serious disconnect between what millennials want and what they encounter in the workplace.

Will their influence finally bring change to the outdated status quo?

THE GREAT RECESSION

Millennials entered the job market in great numbers during the Great Recession, and their economic anxiety continues to run high. Their careers have frequently been slow to launch and both marriage and parenthood are often pushed back in hopes of more favorable conditions.

Even though the recession officially ended years ago, according to survey data compiled for the Center for American Progress, financial predictability and economic security still top the list of millennials’ priorities. Most millennials say they are dissatisfied with current economic performance, with nearly a quarter reporting they are very dissatisfied. Less than half feel that their incomes are keeping up or getting ahead of inflation.

Millennials also report feeling that public and private institutions favor the privileged and powerful, and that average people now face a lack of economic opportunity.

AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Wages have been stagnant for decades and workers have been displaced as the manufacturing sector shrinks. It is no longer a foregone conclusion that children’s standard of living will surpass that of their parents. In fact, the likelihood has dropped to about 50%, or a coin toss. Economic growth is slowing, and income inequality is rising. Half of all working adults receive no benefit from economic expansion because the gains are so unevenly distributed. Millennials say that “the rules in America have changed.”

2017-01-16-1484541782-8528644-family1613592_1920.jpg

There is evidence that supports that view. US workers are putting in longer hours, and most resident adults in households with children are employed, even when the kids are very young. Millennials tend to have children later, right when their career responsibilities are picking up speed. Their own parents are living longer, so today’s workers are likely to find themselves squeezed between caring for aging parents and their children at the same time. Nanette Fondas, writing in the Harvard Business Review, calls this “a work/life tsunami.” She found that “38 percent of U.S. Millennials say they would move to another country with better parental leave benefits. That’s a shocking proportion, and it should disturb everyone who cares about U.S. companies and competitiveness.”

US POLICIES LAG BEHIND OTHER NATIONS

The Center for Partnership Studies’ Social Wealth Economic Indicators (SWEIS) show just how serious this problem is. These new metrics show that the US spends less than half the resources in family supports (such as paid parental leave and paid sick days) as a percentage of GDP than comparable countries. The US devotes the least to early childhood education and care, even though this is a cornerstone for economic competitiveness that leverages the potential of future workers, increases women’s labor force attachment, and allows parents to provide both cash and care for their kids.

Social Wealth Economic Indicators also show that the US has done little compared to other nations around the world when it comes to elder care. Comparable nations invest 2 or 3 times what the US does in long term care for our rapidly aging people. Moreover, direct care workers in the US caring for our elders at home or in group facilities, earn less per hour than in other developed nations.

MILLENNIALS CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

This systemic devaluation of care drags down our economy, threatens peoples’ ability to keep their families on an even keel financially, exacerbates gender inequality, and increases income disparity. It also places the United States economic future in danger.

Not only is failing to support care terrible for human well-being; it is terrible for national competitiveness in our post-industrial age. Social Wealth Economic Indicators show that economies can produce nothing unless the individuals that make them up get the care they need across the lifespan. From childhood to old age, we will be either receiving or giving care. Societies can only deliver on the promise of shared prosperity and equality of opportunity when the need for care within families and from others is acknowledged, valued, and planned for.

Like every generation before them, millennials want to shape the culture to fit their ambitions and values. If they join together to demand that the economic value of care work, be it in homes or in the workplace, is recognized, we’ll all be much better off.

Now is the Time: Do the Next, Right Thing

We will make only one choice.

Throughout our lives, we do only one thing. Again and again, moment by moment, year after year. It is how we live our days, how we shape our lives.

Our choice is this: What is the next, right thing for us to do? Where, in this moment, will we place our time, our care, our attention? Do we remain as we are, do we move? do we speak or keep silent, attend to this person, or that task, or turn away, in this direction, or that?

Each new moment demands a fresh choice.

after every decision, there is yet another to be made. And another. Ours are not so often obviously dramatic choices. We are rarely called upon to know the time to change careers, the day to get married, the hour to leave the city of our birth. Most choices are small, quiet, intimate things that flow from us as a breath, as water exhaled from a mountain spring. Endless, simple, one by one thimbles of water tumble into the next, creating the smallest trickles playing this way and that. Still. Over time, with neither map nor plan – through surprising twists, curving around unforeseen obstacles-mere droplets of water will always invariably find their way down, down, through the valley, completing their pilgrimage at last to become one, an ancient and familiar melting, into the sea, from which it came.

At every point of resistance, any threat of change, our tiny stream makes a choice: To go right or left? Over or around? Or it may just stop, right where it is. Without moving, our stream becomes a shallow pool, creates a slowly growing fullness, waiting. Waiting for that singularly perfect moment when the only possible next thing is to spill itself out and over, stumbling and rushing everywhere along its way.

The stream knows nothing of what lies ahead. It is not conscious of planning for any possible future. It is simply following the path of least resistance, motivated by gravity. Still, how does the water “decide” to go right, or left, when approaching a boulder, a fallen tree? And yet, a choice is made. Inch by inch, the water does the next, right thing, perhaps encountering tiny rivulets or flowing creeks along the way. By the end of the journey, if we look back, we witness the gradual, evolving birth of what we now realize has, drop by drop, choice by choice, become a stream.

A stream is little more than an ongoing fidelity, a consecrated relationship. A never-ending conversation between water, gravity, earth, overcoming obstacles, in a relationship born over time, which gives birth to this astonishing miracle we then call, “stream.” This ancient, elemental rhythm between water and earth creates all the streams that saturate all the seas that cover all the world.

So it is with our lives. The only choice we ever make is one called out from us by a similarly vital inner gravity, an invisible thread that carries our life forward, until our life – this one wild and precious life, meets the world. In all its wonder and promise, in all its ferocity and confusion. Just as it is.

So. We must prepare. We will make choices. If fortune smiles upon us we will make good, honorable, strong choices. But every decision we make, no matter how small, shapes the ground of our being. Each choice helps form the foundation upon which we stand, and live, and act.

This is our field of battle: Here, who we are meets what is in the world. This essential, heroic relationship, this intimate communion between the quiet wisdom of our hearts, and the ways the world emerges, moment by moment, right before our eyes becomes our most reliable tool, our most potent weapon, our true north, a lifelong practice of deep and holy listening for that very next, right thing we will – make no mistake – absolutely, and sooner than we imagine, be required to choose.

Our lives hang in the balance. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow us all.

The Girl Scouts Will March In Trump’s Inaugural Parade And People Are NOT Happy

The Girl Scouts of the USA came under fire following the announcement that members of the organization would be marching in President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural parade.

On Tuesday, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced the official lineup of parade participants. Among the many military groups and marching bands listed, the “Girl Scouts of America” list item certainly stood out.

Twitter users ― including current and former Girl Scouts, troop leaders and parents of scouts ― were quick to express their concerns with the organization’s involvement in Trump’s inauguration festivities.

Many stated that the president-elect’s widely reported treatment of women and girls goes against the Girl Scouts’ values, and makes the group’s participation in the parade indefensible.

Responding to complaints, the official Girl Scouts account tweeted, “Since 1917, Girl Scouts have engaged in Presidential inaugural events to learn about the US democratic process & civic engagement.”

The organization later added, “As a non-profit organization GSUSA is nonpolitical, nonpartisan, & will continue to encourage our girls to be civically engaged.”

But concerned Twitter users said the issue has nothing to do with partisan divides but rather the normalization of a leader who has made countless misogynistic comments, degrades women and brags about committing sexual assault.

The Boy Scouts of America is also listed on the inaugural parade lineup. Though that group’s participation has not generated nearly the same level of response, several former scouts have spoken out against the Boy Scouts’ involvement.

Following the social media outcry, the Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital chapter posted a statement on Facebook.

“Thank you for your feedback,” the statement begins. “As you know, for 100 years, Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital has participated in the presidential inauguration. The event is an important symbol of our democracy and the peaceful transition of power.”

“Girl Scouts will participate in this historic event because at Girl Scouts, civic engagement, responsibility and duty are at the heart of our values and ideals,” the statement continues. “It is written into our promise and law, which among other things calls on girls to serve their country, respect authority and make the world a better place.”

Though several commenters pledged solidarity with the organization’s decision, the response to the Facebook post was overwhelmingly negative.

“So now we’re back to teaching our girls to blindly submit in obedience to men of authority,” wrote one commenter. “Your statement is most disturbing, and suggests that young girls should ‘respect authority’ without question. I find this frightening,” added another.

Others noted that their scouts would instead be participating in the Women’s March on Washington or one of the many sister marches on Saturday.

When asked directly about scout participation in the marches, the Girl Scouts tweeted, “GSUSA respects the rights of each member of our Movement to make their own decision regarding their participation in this event.”

As Friday approaches, former and current members continue to speak out on Twitter. Many have also called the Girl Scouts to express their concerns in the hopes that the organization might change its mind.

As one former scout, scout leader and mother of two scouts wrote on Facebook, “This is one tradition that should have been broken.”

MISTER CAINBRIDGE WAS a West Indian merchant who owned a small grocery store in Harlem. From early morning to late evening he sat in front of his store next to the vegetables, on a wooden milk crate with a faded pillow on top that served as a cushion. There, six days a week, beneath the heavy brown canvas awning, cranked down over the store window, he sat, representing an approachable throne of earthly grace, where a familiar face was trusted to buy food on credit, and during these depressive days of 1938, everybody needed a little extra time to pay for food.

Watch The Obamas’ Cute Playdate With The Kids Who Received Their Swing Set

After donating their daughters’ swing set, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama got to see just how much happiness the gift brought its new owners.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Obamas visited the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter, the shelter that received the swing set, in Washington, D.C. The president pushed kids on the swings, while the first lady showed them how to use the rope swing.

Watch the kids reacting to seeing the Obamas below.

The Obamas offered the swing set, called “Malia and Sasha’s Castle” and put up on the South Lawn of the White House in March 2009, to the Trump family, who declined. It will now be a fun spot for families at the Jobs Have Priority Shelter, which aims to “move homeless individuals from dependency to self-sufficiency by removing the barriers that prevent them from being successful.”

On its Facebook page, the team at the shelter wrote that it was “honored” the Obamas chose it as the owner of their beloved play set. The post also included the hashtag #ForeverThankful.

How To Recover From Blogger Burnout In 3 Easy Ways

What Happens When You Step Away

What happens when you’ve slowed down on social media to truly reflect where you’re heading with your business?

What happens when you lose the flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter anymore?

What happens when you feel stuck?

You haven’t spoken up in over 2 months and we all know that is forever in the online world. You’ve not posted on all your social media platforms, You haven’t recorded a video, You’ve not showed up in your own FB group! What happens to your self-esteem and your confidence when these actions take place. Well, I should really ask what happens to your self-esteem and confidence when nothing has taken place or when you are sucked into this idea that you have to be online 24-7 in order to make a dollar? Well, it can be pretty depressing to know or should I rather say “think” that you have to start all over.

“Truth is being on social media all the time does not equate to running a business or conducting business activity”

You didn’t always feel this way…You actually had some rhyme or reason to what you were doing months before but somehow you’ve experienced something called burnout. That’s what it is. I hate this term burnout. It feels so cliche, it feels like I crashed and burned and there’s no return. There’s no getting back up. But really with all these emotions and thoughts there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lesson to be learned and taught to others.

So…let me revisit those questions and share with you my answer.

What can happen when you’ve slowed down on social media?

For starters you get to reflect where you were/are heading with your business… So in my book, amazing things can happen! You begin to have a new sense of confidence and clarity. You can find a new sense of commitment to your goals and what you stand for in your business. You can begin to find your own voice again. You know what when you are constantly online being bombarded by everyone else’s messages you can begin to sound like or imitate someone you really admire. But guess what? You aren’t that person so this time away can bring about a uniqueness in you, and difference in you where you begin to stand out more in your own niche in this sea of online businesses.

What can happen when you lose your flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

Realistically you haven’t lost your flow…you had it scheduled once before. If you scheduled it before I’m sure you can refer back to your old schedule but this time with a breath of fresh ideas and opinions. You can find it on a piece of paper a word document, one of your planners. Start looking back and re-evaluating what you were doing before the burnout. You may just be in a bit of a funk…YOU personally and internally may not be in a flow but that’s ok. Begin to reconnect with your creator first, with the God who created you and listen in to your spirit and where He would have you begin. He’s given you a message for others and you know you gotta get it out to the masses. Start small. Start with an inspirational photo, feel free to reintroduce yourself. Do whatever feels right to you but whatever you do never give up because you lost your flow or feel like you don’t know where to start. I can help with that…I hope this blog post is helping with that now.

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter?

Well honey, this is more of an internal thing. If you are feeling like your voice won’t matter then guess what…it won’t. It’s not for you to determine how your story will connect with others. It’s not for you to give a consensus on the wonderful message imparted within you. Nope you don’t get to judge your message before sharing with others.

When I stepped outside of my own comfort zone and began to share my story and share what I stood for, guess what. I got an astounding…”That was powerful”. This was a mindset shift that I was sharing with other women in my group.

Did you know that I re-edited and re-edited and stressed over this message for days before I put it out. Your voice is your message and when you share it just know if you’ve touched one person you’ve done your job!!!

Conclusion

Whether you are recovering from “Burn Out” or currently experiencing it as you read this post, it’s important to remember that business is a journey and there is no race to the finish line. Brands continually evolve and grow just like we do as people. Sometimes that growth may feel stunted and other times you may experience a growth spurt. But most importantly, building a business is a journey through personal development.

Learning more about yourself and allowing your commitment to shine through regardless of where you think you should be in business are important steps to showing up and serving others through your business.

How healthy is your diet? The most specific answer you could probably muster might be something like “pretty healthy” or “not really that healthy.”

But now, a new urine test provides a more specific and reliable answer to that question, according to a small new study.

The test detects and measures the levels of certain biological markers that are created when foods such as meat, fruit and vegetables are broken down by the body after a person eats them, the researchers found. [7 Foods You Can Overdose On]

These markers can more objectively indicate whether a person eats a healthy diet — for example, one that is rich in fruits and vegetables, said lead study author Isabel Garcia-Perez, a research associate in the Imperial College London Department of Medicine. The test can be run in 5 minutes, according to the study.

In the study, the researchers asked 19 people to follow four different diets that ranged from very healthy (high in fruits and vegetables) to quite unhealthy (with lots of high-fat foods and low in fruits and vegetables). Each person in the study followed each of these four diets: They stayed at a lab, on four separate occasions, for three days at a time, and during each stay, the researchers collected the people’s urine samples in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Then, the researchers analyzed the urine samples for the various chemical compounds that are produced when the body breaks down food. Some of these compounds indicate that a person has recently eaten a certain type of food, such as red meat, chicken, fish, or fruits or vegetables. Other compounds provide an even more detailed look at a person’s diet by indicating that he or she has recently consumed specific foods, such as grapes, citrus fruits or leafy green vegetables, according to the study, published today (Jan. 12) in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Based on the results of their tests, the researchers created a model profile of urine compounds that indicates that a person is eating a healthy diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables. [Pee a Rainbow: Scientist Snaps Shot of Colorful Urine]

This model urine profile can be compared with any person’s urine profile, to provide an instant indicator of how healthy the person’s diet is, the researchers said.

In their study, the researchers also tested the accuracy of the new test by looking at urine samples and dietary information from 225 people in the U.K. and 66 people in Denmark from a previous study. The researchers were able to accurately predict these people’s diets based on just their urine samples, according to the findings.

The new test could be used in research that looks at people’s dietary habits, the researchers said. Typically, the information on people’s diets that is used in studies is self-reported. In contrast, the new test provides information that is more objective and accurate, the researchers said.

However, the work on the test is still in its initial stages, and it is not commercially available yet, Garcia-Perez said. The researchers are working on developing the test further, she told Live Science. Once the test is developed further, it could also be used one day in weight-loss programs to monitor whether people are following their diets, Garcia-Perez said.

THE IOWA KID

THE IOWA KID

Randy Allen was only 12 years old, but here he had a rifle in his hand and a dead body at his feet. The smile on his face was a smile of triumph and satisfaction. Seven men had killed his mother, father, and sister before his eyes. The two women were raped many times before they were murdered. Now the son who witnessed it all would find justice in the guns he carried. I have read many stories of the hard life early Americans had to overcome in order to settle the untamed west. All too often the children suffered the direst situations imaginable. This is a story about that unfairness and how one boy had to rise above it to become a man much before his time. I write this book in remembrance of my cousin Freddy Welder of Madrid, Iowa. His love was his wife Gloria, his mother, brother Don, his kids and grandchildren. He loved to work the farm and on cars. They were a very big part of his life as he was to them. He died last year of2010 around 8:00 at night. His pickup collided into the back of a gain truck in the dark and the grain truck had no lights on. He was going to pick up pizza, one of his favorite foods. He never made it. After the accident he talked to his wife and told her he would be alright. But he wasn’t. WE MISS YOU FREDDY.

This Tweet About Joe Biden Would Be A Brilliant Act Of Resistance Against Trump

A tweet about Joe Biden becoming president for a day is getting a yuuuuge response on Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook.

Mostly because the tweet has unleashed a revenge scheme against President-elect Donald Trump that’s hilarious in its petty brilliance.

It all started in October, when Andy Levy, of Fox News Channel’s “Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld,” tweeted this gem.

The tweet was then shared on Tumblr by a user who goes by the name hanspolo in January.

On Tumblr, Levy’s tweet got over 134,000 notes and users began to chime in with why they thought this was a brilliant idea.

One user, Justin Brown, who goes by estebanwaseaten on Tumblr, added this “extra fantastic” bit about why Obama’s early resignation would subvert Trump’s team in an unexpected way.

On Jan. 13, another Tumblr user, who goes by the name ivelostallcontrolofmylife, imagined what history class would be like if this were to happen.

The trifecta of comical comments soon went viral on Tumblr.

Andi Greynolds of Shelby Charter Township, Michigan, saw it in her feed, took a screen grab and posted it to Facebook.

The screengrab quickly went viral on Facebook as well, receiving over 10,000 likes and over 80,000 shares.

“I was shocked,” Greynolds told The Huffington Post. “I thought it would get a couple of views and maybe a share or two like the things I normally post.”

The screengrab also made its way back onto Twitter in replies to Levy’s original tweet, allowing the pettiness to come full circle:

Someone even made a change.org petition based on the idea. Your move, Obama.

Repealing The ACA Could Be A Nightmare For Mental Health Care

Senate Republicans are already working to repeal the Affordable Care Act ― a move that could be devastating for those with mental illness.

Eliminating the ACA would strip health insurance from an estimated 20 million Americans, including coverage for services that help some of the one in five Americans with a mental health condition.

Most health plans sold through Obamacare were required to offer coverage for behavioral disorders, including therapy, medication and preventative measures like depression screenings. Additionally, the ACA prohibited insurance companies from denying coverage for those with preexisting conditions like mental illness.

In an open letter to congress earlier this month, American Psychiatric Association president Maria Oquendo and CEO Saul Levin addressed how greater health care access through programs like Obamacare made a difference for those with psychological conditions.

“Individuals with … mental health issues previously struggled to obtain insurance coverage to help them access care,” they wrote. “Current law changed that by requiring coverage of necessary services to treat mental illness. Consequently, it has become less burdensome for Americans to access appropriate and evidence-based mental health care, thus improving their chance for healthier and more productive lives while reducing the stigma around mental illness.”

The ACA made measurable progress on mental health treatment

Insurance makes treatment for mental health more easily accessible. And in the case of Obamacare, it seems to be working: The uninsured rate for people with a serious psychological health issue fell from 28.1 percent to 19.5 percent between 2012, when the ACA was enacted, and 2015, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The percentage of American adults with a major mental health issue who needed care but couldn’t afford it declined in the same period.

This seemed to play out anecdotally, too. Earlier this month, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) asked people to share their ACA stories and how the law helped them. Many replied that Obamacare assisted with getting the mental health care they needed, whether it was through mandated coverage for their pre-existing condition or just lower premiums:

The ACA also sent an important message in terms of stigma. Professional care, whether it’s through therapy, medication or both, is the only way to manage behavioral disorders. Yet research shows the damaging, false stereotypes surrounding mental health often stand in the way of people seeking treatment

To require all insurance companies to cover or compensate for that care, in some way, is to state that mental health is a key component to a person’s holistic well-being.

The brain and body are connected,” Sagar Parikh, associate director of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center, previously told The Huffington Post. “The bottom line is that treating mental health problems not only reduces individual pain but it actually has an impact on physical health.”

What’s next?

Of course, no piece of legislation is perfect. Many argued that Obamacare aimed to create parity between mental and physical health when it came to insurance, but it sometimes came up short in practice. A report conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness also found that those with insurance, either through Obamacare or their employer, still had a difficult time finding mental health providers who were covered under their plan. Many also reported challenges with obtaining medication.

It’s difficult to predict what changes insurance companies will make to mental health offerings if the ACA is abolished. It’s possible that other bills, like the newly enacted 21st Century Cures Act, may help in some way by funding grants to increase the number of psychologists and psychiatrists across the country.

So far, though, Republicans don’t have a concrete replacement plan for Obamacare.

“As Congress considers significant reforms to health insurance coverage this year, it is critical that any such reforms do not undo the gains which have been made over the past several years for individuals with mental illness, and that any such reforms only further enhance coverage and access to lifesaving evidence-based care,” Oquendo and Levin wrote in their letter to Congress.

One thing is for sure: A mental illness should be treated just like any other illness ― and that includes adequate coverage.

Trump’s EPA Pick Went Easy On Industry That Backed Him: Report

With his nomination hearing just a matter of days away, Environmental Protection Agency administrator nominee Scott Pruitt is facing allegations that he gave a regulatory pass to polluters who in 2010 helped elect him Oklahoma’s attorney general.

A new investigation by the Environmental Working Group advocacy organization revealed that Pruitt received more than $ 40,000 in campaign donations from executives and lawyers who represented poultry companies named in a lawsuit brought by Pruitt’s predecessor, Drew Edmondson.

That lawsuit, filed in 2005, accused the companies — including Tyson Foods — of polluting the Illinois River basin with runoff from chicken manure they were spreading over land in northeastern Oklahoma. While the lawsuit was concluded about a year before Pruitt took office, the judge never issued a ruling in the case and Pruitt never issued an appeal for the matter to be resolved.

In a comment to The Oklahoman newspaper last year, Pruitt explained his inaction on the case by saying that “regulation through litigation is wrong in my view. That was not a decision my office made. It was a case we inherited.”

In total, the EWG report noted that more than half — about $ 21,700 — of the poultry industry cash received by Pruitt’s campaign in 2010 came from Tyson executives or lawyers representing Tyson. All told, the poultry donations totaled about 4 percent of the approximately $ 1 million raised by the campaign.

That number includes $ 7,500 from Tyson’s former general counsel James Blair and his wife Nancy, $ 5,000 from former Tyson CEO and current chairman John Tyson and another $ 5,000 from former Tyson CEO and current board member Don Tyson.

In a statement issued to The Huffington Post, Tyson spokesman Worth Sparkman noted that Tyson did not, as a company, contribute to Pruitt’s campaign, but added that “our employees are encouraged to participate in the election process of public officials at all levels, and are at liberty to make personal contributions to any campaign as they see fit.”

As the EWG report notes, the contributions also preceded Pruitt’s dismantling of the Oklahoma environmental protection unit that cut the unit’s funding from $ 463,000 the year he took office to zero two years later.

While a Pruitt spokesman told the New York Times that environmental cases are still being handled by the state solicitor general’s unit, Edmondson noted to the paper that prosecution of environmental crimes in the state are still down due to the unit’s erasure.

Ken Cook, president of the EWG, described Pruitt’s acceptance of those contributions and his action on Oklahoma’s environmental protection unit as a “disturbing” indication of his broader stance on environmental protections.

“Very clearly, this is someone coming in [to lead the EPA] with an ideology to deregulate at whatever government level he finds himself,” Cook said. “There’s no saying that ‘we just have a different philosophy’ about who should enforce environmental law. The philosophy, if it exists, is that environmental policy shouldn’t be enforced at a state or federal level. It is industry unrestrained.”

The Illinois River watershed is cleaner today than it once was. The level of phosphorous in the water decreased about 40 percent between the years 2009 and 2014, part of what an Oklahoma state official described as a “team effort” involving both Oklahoma and Arkansas officials, citizens and firms.

Some of Pruitt’s defenders believe he deserves credit for the role he’s played in cleaning up that watershed.

One of them is former Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission administrator Ed Fite. In an op-ed published in the East Bay Times on Friday, Fite praised Pruitt for helping broker a “practical and economical” agreement on water pollution between the two states involved.

Lincoln Ferguson, a Pruitt spokesman, pointed to that agreement in a statement provided to HuffPost as an example indicating that Pruitt “has taken extraordinary steps to protect our state’s scenic rivers” by moving the matter “past decades of unfruitful litigation.”

Still, Pruitt’s connections to agribusiness interests aren’t the only ones raising environmentalist eyebrows.

Previous reports have also detailed a close but secretive relationship between Pruitt and the oil and gas industry.

As the New York Times reported in 2014, fossil fuel companies contributed more than $ 215,000 to Pruitt’s two most recent campaigns. In addition, industry lobbyists actually drafted letters Pruitt sent to the EPA and other federal departments objecting to environmental regulations.

As Oklahoma attorney general, Pruitt has sued the EPA more than a dozen times, alleging federal overreach on matters such as the Clean Power Plan and the “waters of the U.S.” Clean Water Rule.

The nonprofit through which Pruitt helped coordinate those lawsuits, the Rule of Law Defense Fund, also has industry ties.

The Charles and David Koch-backed Freedom Partners organization donated at least $ 175,000 to the organization, prompting six Democrats on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works to push for details on Pruitt’s ties to the nonprofit.

Pruitt’s nomination hearing before that committee begins Wednesday morning.

What Successful People (Who Are Actually Happy) Do Differently

2017-01-12-1484256577-9607662-WhatSuccessfulPeopleDoDifferentlyHP.jpeg

Achievement rarely produces the sense of lasting happiness that you think it will. Once you finally accomplish the goal you’ve been chasing, two new goals tend to pop up unexpectedly.

We long for new achievements because we quickly habituate to what we’ve already accomplished. This habituation to success is as inevitable as it is frustrating, and it’s more powerful than you realize.

The key to beating habituation is to pursue, what researchers call, enduring accomplishments. Unlike run-of-the-mill accomplishments that produce fleeting happiness, the pleasure from enduring accomplishments lasts long after that initial buzz. Enduring accomplishments are so critical that they separate those who are successful and happy from those who are always left wanting more.

Researchers from the Harvard Business School studied this phenomenon by interviewing and assessing professionals who had attained great success. The aim was to break down what these exceptional professionals did differently to achieve both long-lasting and fulfilling success.

The researchers found that people who were both successful and happy over the long term intentionally structured their activities around four major needs:

Happiness: They pursued activities that produced pleasure and satisfaction.

Achievement: They pursued activities that got tangible results.

Significance:
They pursued activities that made a positive impact on the people who matter most.

Legacy: They pursued activities through which they could pass their values and knowledge on to others.

Lasting fulfillment comes when you pursue activities that address all four of these needs. When any one of them is missing, you get a nagging sense that you should be doing more (or something different).

The behaviors that follow are the hallmarks of people who are successful and happy because they address these four needs. Try them out and see what they do for you.

1. They are passionate.
Jane Goodall left her home in England and moved to Tanzania at age 26 to begin studying chimpanzees. It became her life’s work, and Goodall has devoted herself fully to her cause while inspiring many others to do the same. Successful, happy people don’t just have interests; they have passions, and they devote themselves completely to them.

2. They swim against the current. There’s a reason that successful and happy people tend to be a little, well, different. To be truly successful and happy, you have to follow your passions and values no matter the costs. Just think what the world would have missed out on if Bill Gates or Richard Branson had played it safe and stayed in school or if Stephen King hadn’t spent every free second he had as teacher writing novels. To swim against the current, you have to be willing to take risks.

“To be normal is the ideal aim of the unsuccessful” ~ Carl Jung

3. They finish what they start. Coming up with a great idea means absolutely nothing if you don’t execute that idea. The most successful and happy people bring their ideas to fruition, deriving just as much satisfaction from working through the complications and daily grind as they do from coming up with the initial idea. They know that a vision remains a meaningless thought until it is acted upon. Only then does it begin to grow.

4. They are resilient. To be successful and happy in the long term, you have to learn to make mistakes, look like an idiot, and try again, all without flinching. In a recent study at the College of William and Mary, researchers interviewed over 800 entrepreneurs and found that the most successful among them tended to have two critical things in common: they were terrible at imagining failure, and they tended not to care what other people thought of them. In other words, the most successful entrepreneurs put no time or energy into stressing about their failures as they see failure as a small and necessary step in the process of reaching their goals.

5. They make their health a priority. There are an absurd number of links between your health, happiness, and success. I’ve beaten them to death over the years, but the absolute essential health habits that successful and happy people practice consistently are good sleep hygiene (fights stress, improves focus, and is great for your mood), eating healthy food (helps you to focus), and exercise (great for energy levels and confidence).

6. They don’t dwell on problems. Where you focus your attention determines your emotional state. By fixating on your problems, you create and prolong negative emotions and stress, which hinder performance. However, by focusing on actions to better yourself and your circumstances, you can create a sense of personal efficacy that produces positive emotions and improves performance. Successful, happy people don’t dwell on problems because they know that they’re most effective when they focus on solutions.

7. They celebrate other people’s successes.
Insecure people constantly doubt their relevance, and because of this, they try to steal the spotlight and criticize others in order to prove their worth. Confident people, on the other hand, aren’t worried about their relevance because they draw their self-worth from within. Instead of insecurely focusing inward, confident people focus outward, which allows them to see all the wonderful things that other people bring to the table. Praising people for their contributions is a natural result of this.

8. They live outside the box.
Successful and happy people haven’t arrived at where they are by thinking in the same way as everyone else. While others stay in their comfort-zone prisons and invest all their energy in reinforcing their existing beliefs, successful people are out challenging the status quo and exposing themselves to new ideas.

9. They keep an open mind. Exposing yourself to a variety of people is useless if you spend that time disagreeing with them and comforting yourself with your own opinions. Successful, happy people recognize that every perspective provides an opportunity for growth. You need to practice empathy by putting yourself in the other person’s shoes so that you can understand how their perspective makes sense (at least, to them). A great way to keep an open mind is to try to glean at least one interesting or useful thing from every conversation you have.

10. They don’t let anyone limit their joy.
When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When successful, happy people feel good about something that they’ve done, they don’t let anyone’s opinions or accomplishments take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain–you’re never as good or bad as they say you are.

Bringing It All Together

People who are successful and happy focus on activities that address a variety of needs, not just immediate achievements.

What other habits can make you happy and successful in the long term? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

My commitment to ensuring a strong, coordinated, and global response to health emergencies

We live in a world at constant risk of public health emergencies. In our increasingly interconnected world, public health emergencies can affect anyone, anywhere. The recent outbreaks of Zika, Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and Yellow Fever have reminded us that disease threats are not limited to one country, one issue, or one pathogen. We saw the catastrophic impact of Ebola not only on the numbers of lives affected or lost and overwhelmed health systems but also on the economic development reversals of the affected countries. Yet Nigeria and Senegal were able to contain the outbreak rapidly due to better coordination, incident management systems, robust surveillance platforms and community engagement. One key takeaway is to ensure that each country builds the core capacities of the International Health Regulations (IHR) and ensures the safety of the public. Otherwise, the gains we have made over the past several decades can easily be undone. We must make sure that countries are encouraged, not punished, to report outbreaks and have the necessary support.

The post-Ebola landscape showed that Member States increasingly want WHO to go beyond its traditional normative role to engage and lead health aspects of emergency responses. Through the current reform of the WHO Emergency Programme, WHO is developing new operational capacities and capabilities for outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies.

Strong leadership is essential in the face of health crises. Complex public health emergencies demand a collective response with high-level political and diplomatic engagement at both the national and global levels. Local and international authorities must work together to put health at the centre of their security, economic and development agendas.

In 2009, when I was Health Minister, we re-engineered our business processes to examine the weaknesses and opportunities in our health system. Following that exercise, we established a public health emergency management system from national to district level to prevent and provide rapid response to outbreaks. We introduced basic and advanced field epidemiology training program to build capacity of surveillance officers. We also set up an emergency operation centre and its team investigated hundreds of localised outbreaks. Ethiopia is now better positioned in incident management, coordination, surveillance and diagnostic capacity.

As Foreign Minister, I had the opportunity to shape the region’s response to the Ebola epidemic, facilitating greater country ownership and promptly mobilising 200 Ethiopian health workers to join the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA).

In my vision statement for WHO, I emphasise the need for national preparedness to deal with health threats and build capacity. As Director-General, I will ensure strong, coordinated and rapid global responses to health emergencies by strengthening WHO’s capacity to lead by implementing and independently monitoring the newly-established WHO programme for outbreaks and health emergencies based on the ‘six ones': one programme, one line of authority, one set of emergency management processes and performance metrics, one workforce, one budget and one set of emergency business rules and processes. I will regularly monitor and engage with emerging efforts, such as the recently-established Global Health Crisis Task Force.

We must harmonise emergency responses to ensure synergy and alignment between pandemic preparedness and response efforts at the global and local levels, as well as between existing and emerging health emergency financial instruments. The number of actors in global health governance and service delivery has grown exponentially over the past two decades. This proliferation of other global health institutions is actually an opportunity, creating a multiplier effect for great impact in improving health worldwide. If elected, I will lead from the front and place WHO at the centre of global health action.

Two weeks remain before the Member States of the WHO Executive Board convene to short-list the top three candidates for Director-General. I am running because WHO has the power to make tangible and positive impact on the lives of billions of people. I believe in WHO’s mandate, I know what it takes to serve those who need the most care yet receive the least and I believe I can lead WHO to fulfil its potential.

First, I am passionate about improving the health of people around the world – and I am a firm believer that healthy populations are the cornerstone of sustainable development.

Second, I have proven experience addressing the greatest health challenges of our time at their roots at both the national and international levels. These experiences have given me the technical skills needed to be successful as Director-General.

Third, having served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs – as well as in several board leadership positions – I have the political leadership and diplomatic skills that WHO needs. For example, I brought together all UN Member States to agree to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in July 2015 to finance the sustainable development goals.

I truly believe that together we can create a healthier world.

Australia’s Favourite Recipes

Australia’s Favourite Recipes

This is a specially formatted fixed layout ebook that retains the look and feel of the print book. Australia’s Favourite Recipes is the cookbook by Australians for Australians: more than 70 treasured recipes collected from families all around the country. Collated and edited by journalist and television host Leila McKinnon, and with a foreword (and pavlova recipe) by Margaret Fulton, the book features the stories and memories of everyday Australians and their favourite dishes, while celebrating the wealth and diversity of the food we hold dear. Each recipe has been photographed with a sense of evocative nostalgia – native wildflowers decorate the Christmas table, and pages from historical Australian cookbooks are interspersed with collages of the labels and other food memories from our collective childhoods. Every recipe features a charming introduction describing why the dish is of importance to its contributor, how it came to be a special family dish or perhaps a little story about the contributor’s grandmother and how she introduced them to the recipe. It is a collection of treasured memories. From the perfect chewy Anzac biscuit and Mum’s no-fail spaghetti bolognese to the ultimate lamb souvlaki and lemon delicious, Australia’s Favourite Recipes showcases our national cuisine – the dinners, cakes and slices we crave – and shows how the food we eat has changed over the years. Note: Part of the proceeds from sales of the book will be donated from author and publisher to Legacy Australia, a charity that provides services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the death or incapacitation of a spouse or parent during or after their defence force service.

Nicole Kidman Clarifies Her Controversial ‘Support’ For Donald Trump In New Interview

Nicole Kidman is clarifying her controversial comments encouraging all Americans to accept President-elect Donald Trump in a new interview.

The “Lion” actress came under fire this week for declaring that it’s time to support the reality-TV-host-turned-politician now that he’s been elected because “that’s what the country’s based on.”

Many considered Kidman’s statements to be dismissive of the potential problems of a Trump presidency, especially in light of her “Hours” co-star Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes appeal to “safeguard the truth” during this political moment.

“I was trying to stress that I believe in democracy and the American Constitution, and it was that simple,” she told Access Hollywood on Saturday.

When asked to comment further on the backlash, the Oscar-actress refused to elaborate on her stance. “I’m out of it now,” she added. “That’s what I said and it’s that simple.”

Speaking with the BBC in her initial interview, Kidman explained that she was “reticent to start commenting politically” and prefers to keep her opinions about U.S. and Australian politics to herself. Kidman, who was born in Hawaii, is a dual citizen of both countries.

However, the actress maintained that her passion for advocating for women’s rights like the fight against ovarian and breast cancer remains resolute.

“I’m issue-based,” she said. “I’m very, very committed to women’s issues.”

Kidman is currently starring in “Lion,” which is in theaters now.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

GOP Governors Privately Urging Congress To Reconsider Full Obamacare Repeal

As congressional Republicans move forward on plans to quickly repeal and ― less-quickly ― replace President Barack Obama’s health care law, a wide variety of industry and political influencers are trying to slow their progress. Among the most persuasive may be a set of Republican governors who are fearful about losing the substantial health and monetary benefits from the law that their states currently enjoy.

On Friday morning, Politico reported on five such GOP governors who have been publicly calling on lawmakers to consider keeping the portion of the Affordable Care Act that supports the expansion of Medicaid in states that choose to.

Behind the scenes, these same governors are also working to persuade lawmakers from their states and those who have purview over the repeal and replace strategy that it would be wise to keep some portion of the federal matching funds for states that have pursued Medicaid expansion.

Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio), for one, is set to meet with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) as well as other committee members next week to discuss his concerns about full repeal, a source close to Kasich confirmed. Gov. Rick Snyder (R-Mich.), meanwhile, has been in talks with members of Michigan’s delegation as well as President-elect Donald Trump’s transition staff about maintaining his state’s Medicaid expansion program.

“He also has been open to discussing with them other ideas they may have regarding changes to the ACA,” Snyder spokesman Ari Adler said. “Too often, it seems that the ACA gets reported on as an all-or-nothing package, but there are many separate components that exist. In Michigan’s case, we took the idea of Medicaid expansion, made it our own, improved it and made it work better. But, as you know, everything is up for discussion and the Governor is happy to have those discussions.”

Kasich and Snyder aren’t the only Republican governors who run states that have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Nor are they the only ones who have warned about the potential losses in coverage or budgetary holes that might come if the law is repealed. Gov. Charlie Baker (R-Mass.), Asa Hutchinson (R-Ark.) and Brian Sandoval (R-Nev.) have offered similar concerns. And Democratic governors from Medicaid-expansion states have also been in touch with their congressional delegations in hopes of convincing them to pump the brakes on ACA repeal.

Gov. Tom Wolf (D-Penn.) told The Huffington Post that he’s sent individualized letters to each member of the delegation detailing the consequences for their districts and state of taking Obamacare off the books: chief among them being 700,000 Pennsylvanians potentially losing their coverage, community hospitals facing a massive financial crunch and a drop in services for those dealing with substance abuse. For the past few weeks, Wolf has also barnstormed the state, meeting with health care officials and constituents dependent on the law, to discuss what a post-Obamacare landscape would look like. It is those conversations ― and the subsequent ability to convey the real-world impact of repeal ― he said, that made him and other governors effective advocates for trying to keep parts (if not all) of Obamacare in place.

“I think all they [Kasich and Snyder] are doing is what a good lobbyist is supposed to do which is explain the facts,” Wolf said. “We are telling our delegations, ‘Here are the facts. This is what is going to happen. Are you willing to face those consequences if you do this?’”

So far, Republican lawmakers appear to be willing to face those consequences. As HuffPost’s Matt Fuller reported, the House appears poised to have a majority of lawmakers supporting wiping Obamacare off the books. The dynamics in the Senate are less certain, since all Democrats need to do (assuming they vote uniformly) is convince three Republicans to cross the aisle. But with Trump now fully embracing repeal, lawmakers on the Hill feel additional pressure to place their focus on the replacement instead.

Should it get to that point, there is a possibility that some of the Medicaid expansion may be restored, albeit in a reduced size and scope (think: coverage for those up to 80 or 100 percent of the poverty line, rather than 133.). But while that might attract Democratic votes, it wouldn’t be a simple legislative gambit. Lawmakers would need to find a way to pay for it. And keeping items like the reductions in Medicare spending and some of the Affordable Care Act’s tax hikes would prove to be far less politically popular.

Winter

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

If We’re Going To Change The World, Living Off The Grid Isn’t Enough

When author Mark Sundeen set out to write his latest book, he thought he would be telling a story of Americans living off the grid, eschewing conveniences like electricity and cellphones for “the simple life.”

But it wasn’t long before Sundeen began to question his premise. Decamping to the countryside and living off the land, he suspected, was neither as straightforward nor as revolutionary as Americans daydreaming of tiny houses, solar panels and vegetable gardens might think. Rather than looking for people avoiding the institutions they abhorred, he decided to seek people actively working to create new norms.

That pivot led Sundeen to the three families at the heart of The Unsettlers: In Search of the Good Life in Today’s America, published this week. The families, living in Victor, Montana; La Plata, Missouri; and Detroit, share visions of an American dream stripped of most luxuries. And instead of just talking about it, they’re actually doing it.

The author shows the triumph and struggle in the families’ quests. But above all, their stories display tenacity and perseverance that is, at times, hard to imagine in the face of great challenges and sacrifices.

The Huffington Post recently spoke with Sundeen about his work, and why — in today’s world — its message of grit is perhaps more timely than ever.

What inspired you to go about writing this book — to find these people who have turned to living off the land and off the grid?

Basically, the book is about families with children who are living in ethical dissent to the economy and the government, and doing so in a way that they don’t lose their mind or soul. In fact, they find joy in what they do. I guess the joy part of it is important because if you look at the problems we face as a society — from war to racism to species extinction — you tend to feel so helpless. Part of the reason you feel so helpless is because we feel entirely dependent on the industries that are destroying us.

We hate the banks, we hate Wall Street, but we’re the bank’s customers. We have mortgages, credit cards and bank accounts that enrich the banks.  We hate Big Ag and GMOs and soil depletion, but unless we’re growing our own food, it’s pretty hard to extract yourself from that system. And we might hate the oil companies and global warming, but everything we touch in our society is either made of or delivered by oil. So how do we go from there without being completely depressed? The people I was after were not those who just dropped out, but those who were trying to invent innovative systems to replace those.

How did you find these people who are innovating?

Once I met all three of the families, I knew they were the ones who told the stories I wanted to tell, and in most cases were telling a story I hadn’t even heard of yet. Ironically, I found the couple in Missouri that didn’t use the internet or any electricity or cellphones after posting a note on Facebook looking for people living off the grid with children. Through a series of contacts and connections, I was given their landline phone number and I called them up. The Montana family was easiest to find because they were friends of friends and I was living in Missoula at the time.

I found the Detroit family as I started to meet and interview people you might call “preppers” living in rural America. They were largely white and privileged, and they were sort of preparing for the collapse. But I started to think the collapse has already arrived in places like New Orleans and Detroit, and the people who suffer are not white, middle-class, educated preppers. They are largely poor people of color.

How is what these families are doing different from off-grid living?

When I got started, I thought the book would be about people living off the grid, which turned out to be the least interesting thing about them. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, off the grid meant living in dissent with the global economy. Today, you can be off the grid in a solar-powered house and, like, trading stocks on the internet. I realized that being off the grid was not a big deal in terms of transforming society.

America has this ethos that you can have whatever you want and live the dream, but these people say, “No, you can’t have it all.” And by deliberately choosing not to have it, they might be more rich in a non-material way.

So much of the book centers around food. You spent a lot of time with these families and shared a number of meals. Did you have a favorite one?

The first meal that pops to mind is one I had with the Possibility Alliance [in Missouri]. Every Friday, Ethan [Hughes] would have a big feast and he cooks this amazing spread with roasted peppers and fresh greens. What was memorable about it was that they had fresh beef from their neighbor, and since they don’t have refrigeration, the only way they could get beef is if their neighbor kills a cow and walks over across the street and asks if they want some beef.

It was a truly local meal in every sense because these people don’t have chocolate and coffee and condiments. There were just some Concord grapes off the vine and some berries and then dessert with fresh cream that had just been pulled from the cows and sweetened with honey.

I think the sort of food movement has become mixed up as a luxury item, as something that fancy people do because they have snooty taste. But of course, it’s actually the opposite. It’s not about consumption, it’s about production. And that was evidenced by this meal, where everything had come from either their land or their neighbors’ land.

Speaking of the food movement, the families you interviewed all had a complex relationship with it. Why do you think that is?

The local food movement began as a sort of changing of the means of production, of using appropriate technology. Now, it’s transformed into this elitist sort of consumption. It’s like you want to eat whatever fresh garlic scapes, organic kohlrabi or whatever exotic vegetables you can find. In some ways, it’s become its own enemy.

As Luci [Brieger] mentioned [in the book], if you’re buying organic grapes flown in from Peru in the middle of winter, you’ve missed the entire point. It’s true you’re not eating any pesticides, but you’re causing this plane to fly grapes from South America. It’s insane.

I was also fascinated that Greg and Olivia [Willerer] refused to deal with Whole Foods, which so many people saw coming to Detroit as a huge victory because fresh, organic, healthy food had arrived in a food desert. But to them, it was just a corporation sucking money out of Detroit and putting it into shareholder pockets.

The current political climate seems to provide a particularly interesting backdrop to this idea of creating alternative ways of living. Obviously, you couldn’t quite anticipate that.

I definitely had no idea when I was writing this that Donald Trump would be president and, sadly, this book has become much more relevant now. Writing this during the Obama age, I thought a fair criticism of these people would be that they’re like Chicken Little, thinking the world is so terrible that we have to create a new one. But I think millions more of people are suddenly saying we live in a corrupt petrostate in which our government is taking an active role in destroying our world, so how can we fight it, resist it and stop it? It seemed very prophetic to me.

What do you hope people will take away from reading this book?

I hope the book is totally inspiring to people, though I don’t think many people who read this will follow the path these people did. They didn’t just one day decide to do this, they spent 10, 15, 30 years gradually getting to where they are now. To farm on vacant lots in Detroit, these people have to love it.

This is their dream, and they have the courage, the willpower and the strength to do it. I’m not totally sure that what they’re doing is replicable on a large scale, but in these times where we feel so powerless and we can’t even make basic, free-will decisions to live ethical and meaningful lives, I’m inspired by the people who have the courage to pursue these dreams that seem nuts to everyone else. Watching them might inspire other people to at least say, hey, I might not be able to live without electricity, but I might get out of debt or stop using so much oil and gas.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Warrior Gap: A Story of the Sioux Outbreak of ’68

Warrior Gap: A Story of the Sioux Outbreak of ’68

Riding at ease in the lazy afternoon sunshine a single troop of cavalry was threading its way in long column of twos through the bold and beautiful foothills of the Big Horn. Behind them, glinting in the slanting rays, Cloud Peak, snow clad still although it was late in May, towered above the pine-crested summits of the range. To the right and left of the winding trail bare shoulders of bluff, covered only by the dense carpet of bunch grass, jutted out into the comparative level of the eastward plain. A clear, cold, sparkling stream, on whose banks the little command had halted for a noontide rest, went rollicking away northeastward, and many a veteran trooper looked longingly, even regretfully, after it, and then cast a gloomy glance over the barren and desolate stretch ahead. Far as the eye could reach in that direction the earth waves heaved and rolled in unrelieved monotony to the very sky line, save where here and there along the slopes black herds or scattered dots of buffalo were grazing unvexed by hunters red or white, for this was thirty years ago, when, in countless thousands, the bison covered the westward prairies, and there were officers who forbade their senseless slaughter to make food only for the worthless, prowling coyotes. No wonder the trooper hated to leave the foothills of the mountains, with the cold, clear trout streams and the bracing air, to take to long days’ marching over dull waste and treeless prairie, covered only by sage brush, rent and torn by dry ravines, shadeless, springless, almost waterless, save where in unwholesome hollows dull pools of stagnant water still held out against the sun, or, further still southeast among the “breaks” of the many forks of the South Cheyenne, on the sandy flats men dug for water for their suffering horses, yet shrank from drinking it themselves lest their lips should crack and bleed through the shriveling touch of the alkali.

Religious Leaders Bless Planned Parenthood Health Center And Its Mission

Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and secular leaders gathered inside Planned Parenthood Metro Washington’s new Carol Whitehill Moses health center on Tuesday to perform a blessing of the space.

The event, co-hosted by the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, included interfaith blessings, prayers, and testimonies about why it was important ― politically and spiritually ― for women to have autonomy over their own bodies.

Dr. Laura Meyers, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, told The Huffington Post that it’s crucial for Americans to hear these progressive voices of faith speak up for women.

“Having a group of interfaith clergy perform a ceremony focused on unity and wholeness therefore takes on special meaning to empower and celebrate rather than to stigmatize, control and dehumanize,” Meyers said in a statement released to HuffPost. “Having such a ceremony take place at this moment in history is especially powerful for us as we seek to mobilize our communities of different faiths to come together to affirm and support the reproductive freedoms we cherish and have fought so hard to achieve.”

The ceremony comes at a time when many progressive women feel that their access to safe and affordable reproductive care is under attack. Emboldened by president-elect Donald Trump’s victory, Republicans in Congress are pushing forward with plans to strip Planned Parenthood of its federal funding. House Speaker Paul Ryan announced last week that this provision will be included in a special bill Republicans are preparing that seeks to repeal Obamacare.

Planned Parenthood health centers provide a range of health care services for both men and women ― including testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and screening for cervical and other cancers. The Carol Whitehill Moses Center in DC opened in September and is expected to provide care for more than 12,000 people within its first year.

Conservative Christian opponents of Planned Parenthood have long sought to defund it because its centers perform abortions.

Meyers said that the conversation about religion and reproductive health has been dominated by the “religious right” ― despite the fact that clergy played a role in the abortion rights movement.

Faith-based movements defending a woman’s right to choose have existed since before the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalized abortion in the United States.

“Regardless of the long history of connection between clergy and Planned Parenthood as well as the clergy’s role in the abortion rights movement more generally, those on the right seek to separate those of us in the reproductive rights movement from a sense of deep spirituality and religious connection,” Meyer said. “Their binary moral framework leaves no space for individual questions of conscience nor the moral ambiguity that is an inevitable fact of life.”

The interfaith leaders at Tuesday’s event believe it’s time to change that narrative.

Rev. Dr. Christine Y. Wiley, co-pastor of Washington, D.C.’s Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ, helped to plan and coordinate the interfaith blessing ceremony. She told The Huffington Post that her faith inspired her to support a woman’s right to choose.

“Many people do not understand that there are many kinds of Christians. Conservative Christians dominate the television and Radio media and influence people to think that this brand of Christianity ‘is’ Christianity. Although they have great influence, this stance is far from representing the true tenets of the person of Jesus Christ,” Wiley said. “As a progressive Womanist Christian who is concerned about wholeness in the community, especially for those who are marginalized and disenfranchised, my task is to do what Jesus did, to meet people where they are with love and understanding, and bring healing and freedom to them.”

Watch a video of the interfaith ceremony below.

Four Uncommon Ways to Clear Your Mind and Make Big Decisions

What are some tips for battling decision-fatigue? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Jenny Blake, Author of PIVOT: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One, on Quora.

Decision-fatigue refers to the phenomenon that, like willpower, our ability to make decisions throughout the day diminishes without proper recharging. When mid-Pivot and asking life’s biggest questions, we are often overwhelmed by smaller decisions and things that might not have registered on our radar in the past. Or conversely, we’re so bogged down by small day-to-day decisions that we don’t have the space to ask bigger Pivot questions about what we really want and what next steps would resonate most.

To refresh your mind, I recommend the following:

  • Don’t ask the same giant questions every day (ie: Should I quit my job?). Give yourself a period of time where you don’t have to decide at all, perhaps while you’re researching options. Revisit the decision at specific intervals of your choosing, but not on a daily monkey-mind basis.
  • Create routines for as much as you can in your life – morning routines, scheduling exercise for the same recurring days/times, evening wind down rituals. What recharges you? The more you can create routines around these things, the less you will find yourself debating what to do when throughout the day (gobbling up precious mental bandwidth).
  • Write your questions down.
  • Go with your gut! We actually do know the answer to more than we think – on decisions large and small. If you find yourself debating unproductively, ask: what does my gut say?

Your Drunken Urge For Pizza And Wings, Explained By Science

Anyone who’s ever had a lot to drink probably knows the feeling: You want to chow down on pizza, fast food or other grub — and probably a lot of it. Now, a new study in mice may offer a possible explanation for this desire to overeat: Alcohol may activate some of the brain cells that normally make people feel hungry.

Although the study was conducted in mice, the findings likely apply to people as well because humans have the same types of neurons in their brains as the neurons the researchers focused on in the study, said Jessica R. Barson, an assistant professor of neurobiology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, who was not involved in the study.

Previous research has shown that people tend to overeat after drinking alcohol — a phenomenon dubbed “the apéritif effect” — but it was not clear what the potential biological reasons for this link might be. The effect was particularly puzzling considering that alcohol has a high number of calories per gram, “and calorie intake usually suppresses brain appetite signals,” the authors wrote in the study, published Jan. 4 in the journal Nature Communications. [7 Ways Alcohol Affects Your Health]

In the new study, the researchers examined the effect of alcohol consumption on food intake in a group of mice, in what the scientists called an “alcoholic weekend” experiment. The researchers injected the mice with alcohol over three days. To serve as a comparison, they injected the mice with saline over the three days before and the three days after the alcohol injections. The researchers gave the mice access to the same amounts of food and water throughout the study.

The researchers found that the rodents ate significantly more food on the days when they were injected with alcohol.

This finding is in line with the results of a study in humans published in 2015 in the journal Obesity, which also found a link between alcohol consumption and eating more food.

The researchers also looked at the mice’s brains throughout their experiments, and found that certain brain cells, called Agrp neurons, that normally promote hunger were activated after the mice were injected with alcohol but not after they were injected with saline. Moreover, when the researchers artificially inhibited the activity of those neurons in the mice, the mice stopped overeating, the researchers found.

The researchers concluded that alcohol may help to sustain what the researchers call “false starvation alarms” in the brain. In other words, it may make the mice feel that they are hungry even though they are getting calories from the alcohol itself, according to the findings.

However, the study had certain limitations, Barson noted. For example, the researchers injected the mice with alcohol, and did not arrange for them to drink the alcohol voluntarily, which is the usual mode of alcohol consumption in humans, she said.

“Nobody injects themselves with alcohol,” Barson told Live Science. “We drink alcohol.” Though the researchers likely used the injection method to ensure that the mice received equal doses of alcohol, the injection procedure might have exerted stress on the mice, which could have affected the results, she said. That’s because “stress can change the brain and behavior in powerful ways,” Barson said. For example, it can affect how much we eat, and it can even activate Agrp neurons, she said.

Rex Tillerson Says Exxon Mobil Didn’t Lobby Against Sanctions. Public Records Suggest Otherwise

WASHINGTON ― Former Exxon Mobil chief executive Rex Tillerson testified under oath during his secretary of state confirmation hearing Wednesday that he had no knowledge of his company lobbying lawmakers against sanctions.

Public records show that between 2006 and 2014, while Tillerson was leading oil giant, firms representing Exxon Mobil repeatedly lobbied members of Congress on sanctions legislation targeting Iran and Russia that could hurt the company’s business.

Confronted by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) an architect of several Congressional sanctions bills targeting Iran, Tillerson denied that the lobbying took place.

“I never lobbied against sanctions,” said Tillerson. “To my knowledge, Exxon Mobil never directly lobbied against sanctions.”

Between January and June of 2010, as lawmakers debated imposing sanctions against foreign banks that did business with Iran, two firms representing Exxon Mobil filed paperwork disclosing lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill. The firms were focused on HR 2194, a sanctions bill that became law on July 1, 2010.

Sanctions proponents credit that legislation with contributing to strain on Tehran’s economy and helping to force the country to negotiate significant concessions to its nuclear program.

In 2014, Exxon Mobil again dispatched a lobbyist to Capitol Hill, this time to discuss with lawmakers proposed measures towards Russia in retaliation for its military incursion into Ukraine.

“I think you called me at the time!” Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said during the confirmation hearing.

Despite submitting lobbying disclosure paperwork, Exxon Mobil disputes that its activity qualified as “lobbying” against sanctions. In a statement to The Huffington Post, the oil company said it “provided information about impact of sanctions, but did not lobby against sanctions.”

Exxon tweeted a similar statement Wednesday afternoon

Not all committee members were convinced. “In your mind, calling a United States senator to express your belief that sanctions are not effective is not lobbying,” Murphy said. “In my view, that is a distinction without a difference.”

While heading the company, Tillerson was upfront about his skepticism of economic sanctions against foreign adversaries. “We do not support sanctions, generally, because we don’t find them to be effective unless they are very well implemented comprehensibly, and that’s a very hard thing to do,” he said at the company’s 2014 annual meeting.

On Wednesday, Tillerson would not commit to supporting sanctions against Russia in response to the Kremlin’s alleged role in election-related hacking. “Giving the executive the tool is one thing; requiring the executive to use it, without any other considerations, I would have concerns about,” he said.

Kate Sheppard and Christina Wilkie contributed reporting.

Relationships That Have Roots are the Anchors in Our Lives

By Carolyn Massiah
UCF Forum columnist

The view in my backyard is a conservation area full of various types of trees. As the seasons pass, the trees lose their leaves and even some of their branches, but the trees remain in large part due to their sturdy roots.

To the side of my house is a concrete light pole. It doesn’t have any leaves and branches, obviously, but it is more susceptible to being blown down during a violent storm because it lacks the strong roots that mature trees have to anchor them through a storm.

When I compare and contrast the tree and the pole, I know I would much rather be a tree.

Both trees and light poles stand above the blanket of shrubs and bushes below. However, this is where the similarities end.

Many light poles are inorganic entities of concrete or metal, created through some form of human intervention. The shape and size in which these poles are created will forever be their shape and size as inorganic entities will not change during their existence unless there is additional intervention.

Trees, on the other hand, are organic. They are living organisms that continually change. They will lose and gain leaves and branches but they will also grow and mature throughout their existence. Continual growth and development is what I want for my own life. This is why I would rather be a tree than a light pole.

Unfortunately, positive growth sometimes must come from negative changes. Each year trees weather the change of seasons. With those changes in season, leaves come and they go and sometimes there may be seasons when the trees may not have any leaves at all on their branches.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that become attached to you as much as leaves are attached to branches. However, as the seasons change in our lives those people may disappear. Sometimes it seems several disappear at once and you are left bare much like trees in winter. For whatever reasons, those individuals were only meant to be in your life for a season. Yes, it hurts when those who you thought were going to stay forever leave your life before you are ready, but it is the nature of our organic lives.

Unfortunately, you never know how strong any branch will be until it is tested in the most violent of storms. Some branches appear thick and sturdy while they may actually be hollow or rotten to the core. If you step out on the branch for support because of its sturdy appearance, you might be disappointed and shocked when that branch does not support you but breaks and hurts you instead.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that we have relied upon and with whom we have built a long-term relationship. We have truly let them into our lives. However, as the weight of whatever burden you need bared by them increases, that friend gives under the load and breaks away from you in a permanent and irrevocable manner. Yes, it hurts but just as leaves come for a reason during a season, branches are there for those life-long lessons that we will take with us long after the branches have broken and been swept away. That is the nature of our organic lives.

So based on this, you might now be wondering why I would choose to be a tree instead of a pole. One word: roots!

Because trees are organic living creatures their roots continue to grow and strengthen as the tree grows and matures. When a storm comes, the roots anchor trees and allow trees to bend but not break in the storm.

Poles do not have that same anchor support. That is why we see more poles than trees down after severe hurricanes.

The same can be said for our own lives. Think about those individuals in your life that have been your anchor and support through the good and the bad. Often, much like a tree’s roots, those individuals do all of their work out of the view of others with no need of public acknowledgement. They are the blessings that we cannot overlook in our lives.

After comparing and contrasting the two, if I had to choose I would rather be a tree if it means that I will continue to have the blessings of roots just waiting to support me and feed me as I work to develop and mature throughout my existence.

Why Stepping On A Lego Hurts So Damn Much

The inexplicable agony of stepping on a Lego is a familiar sensation to parents. In fact, it’s so widespread (and so painful) that people have developed special Lego-resistant slippers.

But why is it so painful? Simon Whistler of YouTube’s “Today I Found Out” channel sought to discover the answer

“As anyone who’s done it knows, stepping on a Lego block is something akin to being shot in the foot by a knife soaked in bullet ant venom,” Whistler explains in his video. “In truth, this is an inherent danger of allowing a child to exist in your home.”

According to the video, there are several factors at play: the sensitivity of human feet due to large numbers of nerves, the sturdiness of Lego products, their somewhat jagged structure, etc.

Watch the six-minute video above for the full scientific breakdown. And as Whistler says, “May God have mercy on your sole.”

Democrats Ramp Up Ethics Attack On Trump’s Top Health Pick

WASHINGTON ― Congressional Democrats are signaling they won’t let Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) sail to confirmation as secretary of Health and Human Services for the incoming Trump administration.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), who co-authored a five-year-old law governing investments by members of Congress and requiring public disclosure of their transactions, on Tuesday asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to look into whether Price used inside information he obtained as a member of Congress to enrich himself.

“Congressman Price made hundreds of stock trades since those disclosures first became mandatory in 2012,” Slaughter wrote in a letter to the SEC. “The fact that these trades were were made and in many cases timed to achieve significant earnings or avoid losses would lead a reasonable person to question whether the transactions were triggered by insider knowledge.”

Slaughter’s move follows a call last week by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for the House Office of Congressional Ethics to conduct a similar investigation before Price’s confirmation can proceed. The consumer advocacy group Public Citizen formally filed a request with that office on Thursday.

Democrats haven’t provided any evidence that Price, the physician and six-term congressman tapped by President-elect Donald Trump for the Cabinet position, has violated the STOCK Act or any other laws. The STOCK Act permits members of Congress to make investments in the stock market so long as they report them, which Price did.

“With yet another politically motivated attack on Dr. Price, Democrats are showing just out of touch they are with the American people. The election is over. These charges are laughable. It is time for both parties to come together and address our nation’s serious problems, including enacting genuine patient-centered health reforms,” Phil Blando, a spokesman for the Trump transition, wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.

According to a December report in The Wall Street Journal, Price made more than $ 300,000 in trades of health care companies affected by legislation he worked on or voted on over the past four years.

The Department of Health and Human Services touches nearly every part of the health care system through payments from programs like Medicare and Medicaid and regulations on health care companies.
