The AltRight, Breitbart and Donald Trump.

Labels are useful in politics and life. But what label to use as shorthand for Donald J. Trump’s constantly mutating political pronouncements? Long ago it was clear that he was neither a conservative nor a Republican.

Last Thursday, 25 August, in Reno Hillary Clinton nailed it when she tied Trump to the Alternative Right, or AltRight ,mindset and its primary proponent, Breitbart News. But what exactly is the AltRight message?

AltRight lives exclusively on line on sites like Breitbart News. It is anti-establishment, especially the GOP establishment, and anti political correctness. But it’s core tenet is to eschew equality and embrace hierarchy. In economics this results in lauding income inequality and opposing increased taxes on upper incomes and the estate tax.

AltRight dogma propounds the view that whites are superior to blacks, Hispanics, Asians or other races. This explains the affront they felt at a black man being elected president and their determination to defame any Obama legacy. Their affinity is for the KKK and other White supremacist organizations . They assert white victimhood. and scorn the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Trump’s racism spans from his early real estate dealings to his attacks on a judge due to his Mexican heritage.

The AltRight view of the sexes is likewise hierarchical. Men are to be in control and woman subservient. There is no concern for pay inequality and little for sexual harassment. Hence the AltRight affront that Hillary Clinton could be elected president. Trump’s distain for women is well documented

The AltRight hierarchical preference also applies to religion. Christians (maybe or maybe not including Catholics) take preference over Jews and certainly Muslims. They insist that America is a “Christian Nation” despite neither “God” nor Jesus” nor “Christ” appearing in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution or Federalist Papers. Trump’s Christian beliefs are indeterminate. His bias against Muslims is clear.

The AltRight view of race fits into their ultra nationalism and combines their race and religious hierarchical views into strident opposition to multiculturalism in general and immigration in particular, In this they are the heirs to the anti-Catholic anti-immigrant Know Nothings . Trump’s distain for allies and his bringing, Nigel Farage, the former leader of the British National Party and architect of the Brexit to a rally in Mississippi shows how close he is to the xenophobia of European neo-fascist parties.

In short, the AltRight perspective, much like Trump’s, is racist, misogynist, intolerant and xenophobic.

Integral to this AltRight view is a penchant for postulating wild conspiracy theories from birtherism to the “murder of Vince Foster and other Clinton associates to Hillary’s alleged health problems. Despite the lack of facts or credible sources Breitbart spins new conspiracies at a rate almost too fast to catch up with, which is the point. Now that Steve Bannon has taken leave from Breitbart to become CEO of the Trump campaign, many more unsubstantiated rumors and conjured conspiracies can be expected.

There are legitimate reasons not to vote for Hillary Clinton for president, lack of candor and transparency among them. But there are also good reasons to vote for her including temperament and experience.

Given his temperament and his orbit around AltRight views and Breitbart tactics, there is no legitimate reason to vote for Donald Trump.

Indecesion

Nancy Regan got it right, even though we all laughed at her seeming simplicity. Those two letters are always the safest, easiest way to go. Just saying “no” will keep you out of a world of trouble. Although it can be extremely difficult, at some point you do just have to say no. I will no longer do… fill in the blank. Of course it is a bit more complex – there are many things that drive behavior. Our pasts, our character and happenstance all influence our decision-making process. Most of us have learned right from wrong, no matter how subjective, and know when we should say no, even if we don’t say no.

Some would argue “yes” is far easier. Just agree and go along, get on with it. Say yes to that thing that may or may not be good for you. Get ‘er done as the cable guy says. It seems more risky though. You’re agreeing to action versus inaction. No almost always means choice “D”, none of the above. No always mean no.

And sometimes yes means no and no means yes. Yes to no more drinking and no I will do that. Kind of like positive and negative reinforcement. They both end up getting the same place but just take a different route.

Decisions are always hard, there is no doubt about it. But always saying yes, or always saying no is never going to get you where you need to be. We all know many nay-sayers and yes-men. I think we can easily identify the Eeyore or brown nose. I think they are universally disliked.

Indecision, self-doubt and fear of failure clouds our thinking. Sometimes we are so afraid of failing that we fail to decide and then we surely fail. All we can do is to make the best decision based on the information we have, right or wrong. And sometime it will be either or both. Deliberation is critical process that needs to cloud our mind. It’s OK to be unsure but resolution requires action, positive or negative. If you choose to not to choose, as Rush said in Freewill, you still have made a choice.

So yes or no isn’t the right answer. It’s about taking the best action that may be right for you, unafraid and accepting that in-spite of your best efforts, you may be wrong. But you may be right too.

We live in a world of imperfect choices. Somethings may never be completely right or wrong. Decide to decide and move forward. If you take the world as it comes, hopefully you’ll get it more right than wrong.

Say yes to no and no to yes and one of them is bound to be right, no? Just do it!

Who’s Really Happier: Young People Or Older People?

Older adults may not be as physically healthy or mentally sharp as younger and middle-age adults, but they have higher psychological well-being than these other age groups, according to a new survey of people living in San Diego County, California.

In the study, the researchers evaluated three key factors in adults across their life spans: their physical health, cognitive health and mental health. They found that older people had better mental health than younger people.

The researchers also found that young adults in their 20s and 30s had the lowest scores on measures of psychological well-being of all of the age groups in the study, which included people ages 21 to 99, according to the findings, published in the August issue of The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. [9 DIY Ways to Improve Your Mental Health]

Although the study showed that people experience declines in both their physical health and their thinking skills as they age, aging was also linked with better mental health, greater happiness, more satisfaction with life and an improved sense of well-being, said Dr. Dilip Jeste, the study’s lead author and director of the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California, San Diego.

In addition, older age was associated with less anxiety, lower stress and a decreased risk of depression, he said.

Older age is often thought of as a period of gloom and doom, a time of decline in physical health, happiness and well-being, Jeste said. Yet the new results point out a paradox of aging, he suggested.

“Contrary to the stereotype of old and grumpy, the study found older people to be happy and contented,” Jeste told Live Science.

In the study, the researchers looked at more than 1,500 men and women ages 21 to 99 who lived in San Diego County, California. All of the study participants were contacted by telephone (landlines), and were given a test to evaluate their cognitive skills during the call.

Moreover, all participants were mailed a written survey so that the researchers could gather information about their physical health and psychological well-being. To gauge psychological well-being, adults rated their level of happiness, depression, stress, anxiety and life satisfaction.

Older and wiser

Previous studies that examined people’s well-being across the life span have produced mixed results, Jeste said. Some researchers have reported a U-shaped curve, meaning that they have found that people have high levels of well-being in their 20s and 30s, followed by a decline in it through middle age (40s and 50s) and then an increase during their 60s and 70s. [10 Ways to Keep Your Mind Sharp]

In this new study, instead of producing a U-shaped curve, the data showed a steady improvement in well-being across the decades, Jeste said. This improvement was seen in overall measures of mental health from the 20s through very old age, he said.

The findings show that “aging can be — and often is — a period of contentment, satisfaction and happiness,” Jeste told Live Science.

Although the exact reasons are unclear, he speculated that older adults may be more adept at coping with stressful changes than their younger counterparts are. Their emotional strengths can help them overcome problems, such as their diminishing physical health and declining cognitive function, Jeste said.

Aging and a lifetime of experience not only bring more wisdom but also make older adults more resilient than younger adults, as well as better at solving problems and regulating their emotions, Jeste said.

One limitation of the study is that the researchers only included adults living near San Diego, so it’s not known whether similar findings would be seen in adults in other regions of the U.S. or nationwide. Also, people were excluded from the study if they had been diagnosed with dementia, lived in a nursing home or needed daily nursing care, so the results may not apply to older people with those conditions.

One of the study’s most surprising results was the high level of stress found in young adults, Jeste said. The data showed that people in their 20s and 30s had far worse levels of psychological well-being than people at any other period of adulthood, he said.

The psychological distress of young adults may be explained by the pressures unique to this phase of life, Jeste said. They are grappling with choosing and establishing careers, finding life partners, handling peer pressure and navigating financial issues, he said.

However, older adults can be a valuable resource for young adults and could help contribute to their mental well-being, Jeste suggested. By sharing their wealth of wisdom, skills at making tough decisions and ability to overcome stresses, older people can be great role models for younger generations, he said.

Trump Vows Crackdown On Immigrants Who Overstay Visas If Elected

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump offered fresh details of how he would tackle illegal immigration on Saturday, saying he would crack down on those who overstay their visas as he sought to quiet criticism from conservatives.

In a campaign speech in Des Moines, Iowa, Trump also cited the shooting death of a cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade to urge African-American voters to rally behind him, calling it an example of violence that has to be addressed.

Trump, speaking on the Iowa State Fairgrounds with hay bales stacked behind him, sought to clarify his views on how to overhaul the U.S. immigration system after saying earlier in the week that he was softening on his plan to deport all 11 million illegal immigrants.

That stance drew fire from conservatives who wanted him to stand fast after he won the Republican presidential nomination in large part by a hardline stance that would include building a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

In his speech, Trump said he would seek to institute a tracking system to ensure illegal immigrants who overstay their visas are quickly removed, and would propose an e-verify system to prevent the illegal community from gaining access to welfare and other benefits.

“If we don’t enforce visa expiration dates, then we have an open border – it’s as simple as that,” he said.

In outlining his views, Trump said addressing illegal immigration is important to helping Americans find jobs.

“Every time an African-American citizen, or any citizen, loses their job to an illegal immigrant, the rights of that American citizen have been violated,” he said. “Equal protection under the law must include the consistent application of our immigration laws.”

Trump said his first priority upon taking office next January would be the immediate deportation of thousands of illegal immigrants who remain in the United States despite having committed crimes.

“These international gangs and cartels will be a thing of the past. Their reign of terror will be over. In this task, we will always err on the side of protecting the American people – we will use immigration law to prevent crimes, and will not wait until some innocent American has been harmed or killed before taking action,” he said.

He did not explain how his plan would affect many of the illegal community who have been in the United States for decades and obeyed U.S. laws.

Trump said the death in Chicago of Wade cousin Nykea Aldridge, 32, a mother of four, was an example of turmoil in U.S. inner cities. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former chief of staff to Democratic President Barack Obama, has struggled in particular to contain violence in his city.

The incident permitted Trump to bring up again his desire to be a “law and order” president and underscore his drive to appeal to African-American voters who traditionally vote Democratic and overwhelmingly support Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

“It breaks all of our hearts to see it, it’s horrible,” Trump said. “And it’s only getting worse. This shouldn’t happen in our country. This shouldn’t happen in America. We send our thoughts and our prayers to the family, and we also promise to fight for a much, much better tomorrow.”

Trump raised the subject after sending out tweets earlier in the day that prompted charges of insensitivity to the death and accusations he sought to exploit it for political purposes.

The New York businessman was the headline speaker at “Joni Ernst’s Roast and Ride,” a charity event for military veterans run by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican.

Ernst and most other speakers offered praise for Trump, a rarity at a time when many Republican political leaders have distanced themselves from his candidacy due to his incendiary rhetoric. Trump is running neck and neck with Clinton in polls in the state with 72 days until the Nov. 8 election.

(Editing by Matthew Lewis)

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

When things aren’t going quite the way you’d like them to, it’s often the result of not asking yourself the right questions. Some questions are hard to confront because you’re afraid you won’t get the answer you want, others because you really don’t want to know the answer.

But the best things in life don’t come easily, and turning away from life’s toughest questions is a sure path to mediocrity. I believe that Socrates said it best:

“The unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

Socrates’ observation also applies to business. When Eric Schmidt was CEO of Google, he famously said, “We run this company on questions, not answers.”

Life, like business, runs on questions, not answers. Let’s take a closer look at some of the tough questions we should be asking ourselves regularly.

1. How do people see me differently than I see myself?

Have you ever heard a recording of your voice and thought, “Is that what I really sound like?” Because of the way the sound of the voice travels through the human skull, we never hear ourselves the same way that everybody else hears us. The same is often true for the way we behave. We interpret our behavior in terms of how we think we come across, whereas everyone else sees the real thing. A 360° assessment is a great way to gain this perspective. It gathers feedback that is constructive, anonymous, and accurate. If you forego the 360 and solicit feedback in person, make certain you ask for feedback that is specific, avoiding broad questions and generalizations. For example, you’re more likely to get an honest and accurate answer to, “How well did I handle myself in the meeting when everyone disagreed with me?” than to, “Am I a good boss?” And be careful to show that you’re receptive to the feedback. If you flip out or get defensive every time somebody speaks their mind, they’re going to stop doing it.

2. What/whom did I make better today?

That’s another way of saying, “Leave things better than you found them.” Ending each day by asking yourself what or whom you made better is a great way to keep yourself grounded and focused on what really matters.

3. Am I being true to my values?

Do you ever get that nagging feeling that something is a little off in your life? This often happens when little behaviors creep up on you that violate your values. If spending quality time with your family is one of your primary values, but you keep staying late at work, there’s a conflict. If you want that nagging little voice to go away, you’re going to have to do something about it.

4. If I achieved all of my goals, how would I feel? What can I do to feel that way as I work to achieve them?

The ability to delay gratification in pursuit of your goals is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for success, but delaying gratification doesn’t have to mean being miserable until you cross that finish line. You can achieve more–and have more fun doing it–if you let yourself feel some of that pride and pleasure along the way.

5. What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?

It’s a big world out there, and it’s getting bigger all the time. Scientists have theorized that it once took 1,500 years for the accumulated knowledge in the world to double; now it only takes a year or two. Don’t get caught behind.

6. In what areas of my life am I settling?

When you settle, you accept less than you’re capable of. Sometimes we settle in dead-end jobs. Other times we settle for unhealthy relationships. If you don’t ask yourself where and why you’re settling, it’s hard to stop it.

7. What do I want my life to be like in five years?

Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The corollary is that, once you have your destination in mind, you can plan your route. Five years is the perfect timeframe: It’s not so far in the future that you can’t imagine yourself there, but it’s not so close that you can’t do anything about it.

8. What would I do if I wasn’t scared?

From a survival perspective, fear has its purpose. It’s what keeps us from sticking our hand in the washing machine or any of the million other things that could get us hurt or killed. But fear has a tendency to get carried away. Instead of keeping you safe, it keeps you from improving your life and living your dreams.

9. Who has qualities that I aspire to develop?

When people have qualities that you admire, it’s a great exercise to reflect on these qualities and think about ways that you can incorporate them into your repertoire.

10. What problem are we solving?

Have you ever been in a meeting and suddenly realized that not everyone was having the same conversation? Not because people were talking over each other, but because they had different ideas about the purpose of the discussion. Sometimes it helps to put the topic on the whiteboard when you’re having a meeting. This makes certain everyone knows why they’re there.

11. What’s stopping me from doing the things that I should be doing?

It’s easy to shrug your shoulders and say, “I don’t know what to do,” but that’s just an excuse. Most of the time, we know exactly what we should be doing; we just aren’t willing to move the obstacles out of the way.

12. Will you be my mentor?

It’s an intimidating question to ask, but few people will turn you down. Everyone likes being looked up to, and it feels good to share our knowledge with others.

13. What’s the most important lesson I’ve learned so far in life? Am I living that lesson?

Sometimes life lulls us back into complacency and we’re forced to learn a powerful lesson twice. The trouble with this is that it’s just as much of a rude awakening the second time around.

Bringing It All Together

Asking the hard questions can be extremely uncomfortable. But we don’t learn and grow by sticking with what’s comfortable.

What other questions should people be asking? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Someone Using The Email Address Of Trump’s Doctor Demanded Money For An Interview

Someone using an email address connected to Harold Bornstein, Donald Trump’s doctor, apparently doesn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to cash in on the GOP presidential nominee’s campaign.

Bornstein wrote a letter in December saying Trump would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” The doctor told NBC News on Friday that he had written the letter in five minutes while a limo waited outside.

A Huffington Post reader pointed out that the letter mentioned a website that wasn’t actually registered until several months after the endorsement of Trump’s health was written, so I sent an email on Saturday afternoon to the Gmail address listed in the letter’s header

Someone replied from the address a little after 1 a.m. on Sunday, saying he or she wanted money to talk.

“325 per hour in advance,” the person wrote.

I asked the person to confirm that they were in fact Trump’s doctor. HuffPost would not pay for an interview, I wrote, but would this person still be willing to answer some questions?

The response was curt: “No.”

Was he or she declining to do an interview, or were saying they weren’t Trump’s doctor?

“Yes, no,” the person wrote back.

I was still confused, so I phrased the question more directly: “You are Mr. Trump’s doctor and wrote the letter attesting to his health, correct?”

“No interview, senza soldi,” the person wrote back, using an Italian phrase that means “without money.”

“Are you Donald Trump’s doctor. Yes or no?” I asked.

“Quanti soldi?” the person wrote back, which means “how much money?” in Italian.

A follow-up question was also answered in Italian, and also referenced money.

Finally, I asked why the person was writing to me in Italian. I didn’t receive a response.

Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the exchange.

Gizmodo reported on Friday that a photo of Bornstein appears to show that he uses Windows XP, an outdated operating system that could make a computer less secure. Not using an up-to-date operating system may violate the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, according to the outlet.

Jennifer Gunter, an OB/GYN, wrote in HuffPost blog post earlier this month that it was unusual for a doctor to list a Gmail address on a professional letter because the email service is not a secure method of communication.

Both Trump and Hillary Clinton ― the two oldest candidates to face off against each other in a presidential election ― have released limited data about their health. Trump and his surrogates have peddled the suggestion, unsubstantiated by evidence, that Clinton is concealing something about her health.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Trump, Clinton: Racial Stalemate Or Unfair Fight

    2016-08-27-1472317428-4602998-ObamaPhiladelphia2008.jpg

(Barack Obama, speaking of race, in Philadelphia, March 18, 2008)

In the midst of his first campaign for president, Barack Obama was forced to explain his long association with a pastor spotlighted for racially incendiary remarks from the pulpit of an African American church in Chicago.

“The anger is real,” Obama said then, speaking not only of the “memories of humiliation and doubt and fear” that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s generation raised amid racial segregation still bear. He addressed “a similar anger” among white Americans who’ve worked hard yet “feel their dreams slipping away” only to see “an African American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed…

“Opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense,” candidate Obama said in Philadelphia, in March 2008, with words that still apply near the close of his second term. “This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naïve as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy – particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.”

The president, his public job approval riding above 50 percent in his final year, will return to Philadelphia in September, this time campaigning for his intra-party rival in that 2008 campaign, Hillary Clinton, immersed now in countervailing accusations of bigotry and racism in a contest with Republican Donald Trump.

“From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia,” Clinton said in a multi-faceted assault on Trump’s lack of character or qualification for the nation’s highest office delivered this week in Reno. “He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties,” she said of “a man with a long history of racial discrimination, who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the Internet.”

And with the hiring of campaign CEO Stephen Bannon, publisher of the breitbart.com site favored by the “Alt-Right” – which the Wall Street Journal describes as a mostly online movement that “rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity” – Clinton suggested that “the de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump campaign represents a landmark achievement for the Alt-Right. A fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican Party.”

“It’s the oldest play in the Democratic playbook,” Trump complained in his own attempt at a prebuttal in Manchester, N.H., before Clinton’s address in Nevada. “When Democratic policies fail, they are left with only this one tired argument: ‘You’re racist, you’re racist, you’re racist.’ It’s a tired disgusting argument.”

For a couple of weeks now, in an attempt to convince moderate swing voters that he is not a racist, Trump has made an odd appeal to African American voters who tend to vote 9-1 Democratic in presidential contests: “What the Hell have you got to lose?” It’s Clinton, he contends, who views black Americans simply as votes to be won, and he argues that for generations “millions of African-American and Hispanic-American citizens… have been betrayed by Democratic policies.”

Yet this war of words is not merely another manifestation of the “racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years,” as Obama put it. Some contend that the reporting of the week’s cross-fire between the candidates – which continues on Twitter and will loom large in the Sunday morning talk shows – is actually purveying a “false equivalency.” The idea here is that Clinton actually possesses far more ammunition in her case against Trump than he holds in his claim that she’s “a bigot.”

And it’s no coincidence that Trump is launching his first appeal to minorities at a juncture in which Clinton has gained a double-digit lead in some national polls.

“I think Trump is fairly desperate at this point and to a certain extent has painted himself into a corner,” says Carl Tobias, professor of law at the University of Richmond. “His outreach to African Americans seems to ring hollow, and once Obama is out there talking, that is sure to help Clinton in a lot of ways, certainly with that constituency.”

In a contest dominated by two of the most unpopular nominees in the history of modern opinion polling, there may be little gain for either in a debate on racism.

“I think everybody all the way around is going to hold their noses and vote, which is unfortunate,” Tobias says. “I think people almost stop listening at this point. I don’t know where the high ground is, but nobody seems to be on it.”

Trump arrived at this fight with a history of questionable acts and remarks. In November 2014, the Twitter aficionado tweeted this about the president: “Sadly, because president Obama has done such a poor job as president, you won’t see another black president for generations!” Asked by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl at the time what he meant by that, Trump said: “He has set a very poor standard. I think that he has set a very low bar and I think it’s a shame for the African American people… And by the way, he has done nothing for African Americans.”

Before that, Trump was among the highest-profile and most vocal proponents of the rumor that Obama is not a naturally born American citizen. Clinton running mate Tim Kaine, campaigning on the campus of historically black Florida A&M University the day after the Trump-Clinton exchange over racism, said: “Donald Trump was a main guy behind the scurrilous, and I would say bigoted, notion that President Obama wasn’t even born in this country.”

The actual accusation of racism reached its highest volume in the campaign underway after Trump accused the federal judge handling a lawsuit alleging fraud at Trump University of bias because he’s “a Mexican” and Trump wants to build a border wall against illegal immigration. It was the Republican Party’s own House Speaker Paul Ryan who delivered the strongest rebuke of Trump’s remark about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, a Mexican-American born in Indiana who has fought Mexican drug cartels as a prosecutor. Ryan said: “Claiming a person can’t do their job is sort of the like the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

Trump also has seized upon some stray Clinton comments to make his case for bigotry. “Hillary Clinton needs to address the racist undertones of her 2008 campaign,” he tweeted to his 11 million followers on Friday, offering a video montage of news clippings. In one, Clinton is pictured on an old episode of NBC News’ “Meet the Press” delivering a speech in which she said: “Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act.” In that clip, it’s the late host Tim Russert who suggests to Clinton: “It’s as if you are minimizing, ‘I have a dream.’ It’s a nice sentiment, but it took a white president to get blacks to the mountaintop.” The comment goes unanswered by Clinton.

It was during her contest against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primaries that Clinton suggested that Obama is an eloquent speaker lacking a record of action and it’s proven political leaders who’ve brought about real change. “I would point to the fact that that Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when he was able to get through Congress something that President Kennedy was hopeful to do, the president before had not even tried, but it took a president to get it done,” she said. “That dream became a reality, the power of that dream became real in people’s lives because we had a president who said we are going to do it and actually got it accomplished.”

Obama was forced to deny that his campaign was circulating the remark to rally black voters. “Senator Clinton made an unfortunate remark, an ill-advised remark, about King and Lyndon Johnson. I didn’t make the statement,” Obama told reporters. “I haven’t remarked on it, and she, I think, offended some folks who felt that somehow diminished King’s role in bringing about the Civil Rights Act. She is free to explain that, but the notion that somehow this is our doing is ludicrous.”

Trump is playing another remark attributed third-hand and without direct quotation to Bill Clinton. Two years after that 2008 campaign, in their book Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin reported about the former president attempting to convince Sen. Ted Kennedy to support Hillary Clinton. “Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.” In the years since, the unattributed comment has been repeated in news accounts as an alleged direct quote.

Then there is the business of the “super predators,” which Trump is replaying online. “How quickly people forget that Crooked Hillary called African-American youth SUPER PREDATORS’ – has she apologized?” Trump tweeted this week. In the 1990s, after President Clinton won passage of the Violent Crime Control Act, the first lady warned in a 1996 speech of “the kinds of kids that are called ‘super predators…’ no conscience, no empathy, we can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.” In this year’s Democratic primaries, Bernie Sanders took issue with the remark: “It was a racist term,” he said in their final debate, “and everybody knew it was a racist term.” Clinton later allowed: “I shouldn’t have used those words, and I wouldn’t use them today.”

“The Clinton’s are the real predators,” Trump has tweeted.

For her part, Clinton claims Trump has demeaned the African American community with his portrayal of black neighborhoods as “war zones.”

“He doesn’t see the success of black leaders in every field… the vibrancy of black-owned businesses… or the strength of the black church,” she said in Reno. “He doesn’t see the excellence of historically black colleges and universities or the pride of black parents watching their children thrive…And he certainly doesn’t have any solutions to take on the reality of systemic racism and create more equity and opportunity in communities of color.”

She has reached far back into the billionaire’s own business career to portray a record of racism. “When Trump was getting his start in business, he was sued by the Justice Department for refusing to rent apartments to black and Latino tenants,” she said. “Their applications would be marked with a “C” – ”C” for “colored” – and then rejected.”

The New York Times reports that the legacy of discrimination in Trump housing developments started with the developer’s father. In the 1960s, as Civil Rights legislation was advancing in Washington, the Times reports: “Over the next decade, as Donald Trump assumed an increasingly prominent role in the business, the company’s practice of turning away potential black tenants was painstakingly documented by activists and organizations that viewed equal housing as the next frontier in the civil rights struggle. The Justice Department undertook its own investigation and, in 1973, sued Trump Management for discriminating against blacks. Both Fred Trump, the company’s chairman, and Donald Trump, its president, were named as defendants. “Absolutely ridiculous,” the son said.

“When it was over,” The Times reports today, “Mr. Trump declared victory, emphasizing that the consent decree he ultimately signed did not include an admission of guilt.” But the paper’s investigation – ”drawing on decades-old files from the New York City Commission on Human Rights, internal Justice Department records, court documents and interviews with tenants, civil rights activists and prosecutors – uncovered a long history of racial bias at his family’s properties, in New York and beyond.”

“It takes a lot of nerve to ask people he’s ignored and mistreated for decades, ‘What do you have to lose?'” Clinton said this week. “The answer is everything!”

Clinton went on to enumerate the support Trump has attracted from white nationalists such as David Duke, whose backing Trump took some time to disavow. She spoke of Trump’s plans for a religious test for Muslims entering the United States – a requirement to disavow Sharia law. “Under Donald Trump, America would distinguish itself as the only country in the world to impose a religious test at the border,” she said. “Come to think of it, there actually may be one place that does that. It’s the so-called Islamic State.”

And finally, Clinton says, Trump’s campaign is being run by the publisher of a platform, Breitbart, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as embracing “ideas on the extremist fringe of the conservative right. Racist ideas. Race-baiting ideas. Anti-Muslim and anti-Immigrant ideas – all key tenets making up an emerging racist ideology known as the ‘Alt-Right.'”

“There’s an old Mexican proverb that says, ‘Tell me with whom you walk, and I will tell you who you are,” Clinton said. “We know who Trump is. A few words on a teleprompter won’t change that. He says he wants to ‘make America great again,’ but his real message remains ‘Make America hate again.”‘

Obama, who plans to campaign for Clinton in Philadelphia on Sept. 13, went there in March 2008 to disavow the comments of a pastor he’d known for years – while standing by the man himself and offering a social context for his sentiments.

This time, Obama plans to speak of Clinton’s ideas for improving the economy. But his words from 2008 still resonate today.

“Race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now,” he said then. “We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.”

Ironically, Obama in 2008 took a turn at describing the very electorate to whom Trump has appealed in his own campaign for president this year:

“Most working- and middle-class white Americans don’t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race,” Obama said then. “Their experience is the immigrant experience – as far as they’re concerned, no one handed them anything. They built it from scratch. They’ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pensions dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and they feel their dreams slipping away…

“Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze – a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many,” Obama said in Philadelphia. “And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns – this too widens the racial divide and blocks the path to understanding.”

    Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

    1. What are three principles you live by?
    a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
    b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
    c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

    2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

    3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

    4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

    5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

    6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

    7. What was your biggest challenge?
    a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
    b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

    8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

    9. What are the three rules you live by?
    a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Here’s What Parents Of Kids With Life-Threatening Allergies Think Of The EpiPen Price Increases

Jennifer DiMercurio’s 7-year-old son, Liam, relies on the EpiPen, an auto injector used to treat anaphylactic shock, to save his life in the case of a severe allergic reaction. The device delivers a dose of epinephrine that’s worth about $ 1. But over the past nine years, Mylan, the pharmaceutical company which makes the EpiPen, has increased the price of the patented injecting device from $ 100 to $ 600.

That increase put the DiMercurios in a bind. In January 2015, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job that didn’t include health insurance. The family turned to the private market, where they found a plan that would cover Liam and Jennifer, who had developed a Latex allergy ― but it had a hefty deductible. So on two occasions, after using up their stash to save each others’ lives, the family had to borrow funds from relatives to replace their EpiPens.

This summer, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job ― one that came with good health insurance. But the family couldn’t afford to buy the year’s EpiPens until the new insurance kicked in.

So for four months, they had to rely on expired models.

“I was scared to take my son out, especially as summer was coming ― even at the grocery store I’d be more worried and more on alert because I’ll be afraid,” DiMercurio said. “Especially having to use them myself I’ve seen now how important it is to use it quickly and how fast it happens, and you don’t know if your pen is going to work because it’s expired.”

Presidential candidates, politicians and the press have spent the past week slamming Mylan for the price increases. Since no rival generic products have Food and Drug Administration approval, Mylan has an almost complete monopoly. Mylan’s CEO Heather Bresch, who is the daughter of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), announced Thursday that the company would not cut the price of the injectors, but would increase the maximum it would offer to families in its copay assistance program from $ 100 to $ 300.

Parents of children with life-threatening allergies are still worried.

“So many of us are wondering if we’re going to be able to pay our mortgage if we pay for the pens,” DiMercurio said. “It’s bad enough when kids’ lives are lost just because they didn’t use an EpiPen quickly enough, but to not have it for a financial reason is despicable. It’s all we have and Mylan monopolized the market.”

    FINANCIAL SACRIFICE

Aleasa Word, a working single mom in Atlanta, started saving last September to buy enough EpiPens for her two kids with food allergies to make it through the school year. The packs expire, so they need to be replaced each year, even if they aren’t used. Even with her insurance, a two-pack of EpiPens (they’re only sold in sets of two) costs her about $ 600, and she needs four packs to cover both her children ― one for each of them to carry, and one for each of them to have at school.

That comes out to a total of $ 2,400.

“I am willing to sacrifice whatever I need to sacrifice to get my children their medication,” Word said. “EpiPen is not optional in my house. I can’t not have it.”

Joy Velozo, a mother from Massachusetts, said she worries about the impact the price increase has on families that can no longer afford them. Her son, who will be 12 at the end of the month, is allergic to all nuts, eggs and shellfish. He has been home-schooled since last year in part because his local school would not guarantee that he would not be exposed to allergens in the upper classes, where students switch desks and classrooms throughout the day.

“I can’t imagine having to pay full price to have four sets of EpiPens to know he was covered in every situation,” she said.

Julianne DeNicola’s 7-year-old son, Joseph, died after he came into contact with pizza oil that had touched cheese ― enough to set off his extreme dairy allergy. Although his father administered an EpiPen shortly after his reaction, Joseph didn’t get the drug fast enough.

“This isn’t just an over-the-counter product,” DeNicola said. “This is Russian Roulette. You can’t put a price tag on life.”

DeNicola said she has talked to other parents who say they have been forced to choose between a mortgage payment, putting aside money for college tuition, or buying a new set of EpiPens.

    RISING RISKS

Other parents told HuffPost they’d heard of families splitting packs ― one EpiPen for home, one to carry ― as the cost of EpiPens has risen. This is dangerous. EpiPens are sold in packs of two in case someone needs more than one dose or the first EpiPen fails to deploy due to user error.

The possibility that more families could end up splitting the EpiPen packs terrifies Georgina Cornago Cipriano. She became an food allergy activist after her 14-year-old son, Giovanni, accidentally ingested something with peanuts and died.

“It’s becoming a luxury to be able to have an EpiPen. There are people that have multiple children with food allergies ― how can you afford them?” Cipriano asked. “You have to have more than one set. And you have to have two everywhere you go ― you never know if the first one could malfunction. You don’t know if the first one is going to be enough.”

When asked about families splitting the packs, DiMercurio said that she once had to use two of the EpiPens at the same time on her own son to get his reaction under control. But she’s had to rely on expired pens herself, so she understands the inclination to cut corners for cost.

    THE NECESSITY FOR ACCESS

In September 2013, Josephine Espinosa’s 13-year-old son Cameron was bitten by a swarm of fire ants during a football huddle in Corpus Christi, Texas. He’d had no previous allergy issues ― much like 25 percent of children who suffer their first allergic reaction in school ― but the mix of ant bites and adrenaline caused a severe allergic reaction that killed him.

The school did not have an EpiPen on hand, which Josephine believes could have saved his life.

“Once I found out an EpiPen could have saved my son, I knew I had to do something so that other parents don’t have to go through what we go through every day,” Espinosa said.

Last summer, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed Senate Bill 66, known as the Cameron Espinosa Act, into law, which requires public and charter schools in Texas to stock EpiPens and train staff on how to use them. Last school year was the first the law went into effect.

“It does give me a little peace of mind that [this is the law in Texas],” Espinosa said. “This is a nightmare, every day is a struggle. No parent should have to go through that.”

Eleven states in the country require all schools to carry EpiPens. The law in Texas does not apply to private schools.

Many emergency vehicles do not carry EpiPens or epinephrine on board. And many basic emergency medical technicians do not have access or may not be allowed to administer anything other than the patient’s own EpiPen, according to Food Allergy Research & Education, a nonprofit that advocates for the 15 million Americans who suffer from food allergies.

    THE FEAR NEVER GOES AWAY

Parents of children with food allergies wonder every day if they’re going to get a phone call saying their child is having a life-threatening reaction, Velozo said.

The parents of those who have lost a child “are like the salespeople for EpiPens,” DeNicola said. “We’re the advocates on why they need to have it.”

“We walk on land mines every single day,” said Word, who organizes Love Remembers Day, an annual commemoration for those who have lost a loved one to food-induced anaphylaxis.

“I hate to get the phone call, I hate to get the emails,” she said. “And I don’t want to have a conversation on Love Remembers Day, and it’s because someone couldn’t afford their EpiPen.”

Nipple Confusion, Uncoordinated Pooping, and Spittle: The Life of a Newborn's Father

Nipple Confusion, Uncoordinated Pooping, and Spittle: The Life of a Newborn's Father

For new babies, there are the first-year milestones that everyone talks about-baby''s first smile, first steps, and first words-and then there are all the firsts that everyone conveniently forgets to mention. The first time you find yourself hanging around the baby store parking lot, waiting for the doors to open so you can make an emergency breast pump purchase. The first time you discover that girls, too, can shoot pee across the changing table when you''re least expecting it. And the first time you discover baby poop smeared on your tie moments before you need to leave for work (and it was your wife, not you, who changed the poopy diaper). It''s not surprising that firsts like this leave you feeling like you''re on your own as a new father, and that perhaps you should have skimmed one or two of your partner''s what-to-expect books that appeared everywhere around the house over the course of her pregnancy.

With Nipple Confusion, Uncoordinated Pooping, and Spittle: The Life of a Newborn''s Father, Roger Friedman wonderfully captures all of his daughter''s firsts in an often humorous, sometimes poignant, and occasionally grown-up manner. It''s an enjoyable, honest account of the confusing, terrifying, and downright messy world of parenthood.

Food Legislative System of the UK

Food Legislative System of the UK

Food Legislative System of the UK discusses the principles underlying the country’s food laws, the historical context of today’s food legislation, and the process for amendments in legislation. The book also reviews the influences on the system such as those arising from interest groups, the changing diet, and health environment. In addressing the Food Legislative System of the United Kingdom, the book tackles various examples of food legislation and numerous food- related advisory bodies. Industry, consumer, or enforcement pressures can initiate changes and modifications of laws. Once ministers are convinced that a prima-facie case exists for amending food legislation, they will seek advice from various authorities; make a draft, and present it for full parliamentary procedure. For example, the “Food and Environment Bill” has passed through Parliament by ministers representing the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, while the “Food Bill” has gone through another route with the chief legal officers and company. The book emphasizes the mechanisms through which change is achieved, as well as the points when opportunities exist for interest groups to make their views known to the decision makers. The book can be helpful for food lobbyists, consumer food groups, nutritionists, political scientists, and heads of food and welfare organizations.

Attention, World: Chelsea Handler Is Set To Interview Ann Coulter

Chelsea Handler is making our dreams come true and will interview Ann Coulter within the next three weeks, she told The Huffington Post.

The comedian and talk show host extraordinaire explained to host Alyona Minkovski on Thursday that she “might have to bring in the big guns” when she interviews the conservative commentator on her Netflix show, “Chelsea.”

“Intellectually, I don’t think I can match her, but I mean, I like anybody with a difference of opinion,” Handler said. “I like conflict and I’m not averse to that. I like having conversations that are uncomfortable.”

Handler, an outspoken liberal, answered a resounding “no” when asked whether she liked Coulter’s views, as one might expect. Coulter is “good at eliciting that feeling of grossness inside,” Handler added.

Watch the full interview with Handler below:

Who’s The Boss In Your Relationship?

At a recent dinner party, I witnessed a group of friends teasingly ask one another who was in charge in their relationship. The question was meant to be playfully provocative, with most people laughing as everyone else at the table shouted, often in unison, who they perceived as being the boss. “Well, he decides when they go out, but she decides everything else.” Or “She sounds like the bossy one, but he’s running the show behind the scenes.” Sometimes, the couple themselves would chime in, with one person claiming, “I wear the pants in this relationship!” and the other rolling their eyes as if to say “you wish that were true.” While the whole conversation was meant in good fun, and the sheer lightheartedness of the friends’ tone made me doubt any of them would seriously condone any power dynamic operating in a relationship, they were actually hitting on some serious issues that exist between most couples.

Culturally, it seems we’ve grown a little too relaxed about accepting that one person is the boss or in control of certain aspects of an adult romantic relationship. Equality is one of the most important elements of a successful relationship, and yet, countless couples fall into dynamics and roles that are inherently unequal. One person tends to be more childish, the other more parental, one more submissive, the other more dominating.

Very often, individuals are drawn to these roles, because on an unconscious level, they allow us to play out dynamics from our past that are familiar, and therefore, in some ways, make us more comfortable. For example, if we felt like we didn’t have a voice in our family, we may choose a partner who speaks for us. We may even find ourselves being much quieter around our partner, thus encouraging them to represent us. If we grew up in a family that made us feel incompetent, like we couldn’t do things for ourselves, we may have the tendency to act helpless with our partner. We may find ourselves struggling with simple tasks and depending on our partner to take care of us. Conversely, if we grew up feeling rejected or like we had to take care of ourselves, we may find ourselves seeking control anywhere we can find it. We may not easily trust others, and we may try to control our partners’ movement to help us feel more at ease in the relationship.

Each of these scenarios can lead to a pattern of behavior with our partner in which one of us becomes like a parent and the other a child. Without knowing it, we tend to play out a half of the dynamic that provokes our partner to play out the other half. Although, we may regret these ways of relating, we’re actually helping to create them. Again, it may not feel pleasant, but it often feels familiar. While it isn’t a conscious process, for many people, feeling like we either have control or have someone else to control us relieves our anxiety or insecurity.

Although, we’re initially attracted to these roles as a means to make us feel more comfortable or secure, these power dynamics tend to generate a lot of tension and conflict in our relationships. They may lead to arguments and actual contempt, or they may subtly subdue our feelings of love and attraction. When we start to overstep each other’s boundaries and stop treating each other like two separate people with two sovereign minds, we can seriously diminish our own feelings of respect and attraction toward our partner. When one person is exercising control over the other, we tend to experience less loving interactions in which we really see and feel seen by our partner. We start to replace substance with form, imposing expectations and routines on each other, rather than accepting a more natural give and take that characterizes an equal, adult relationship.

As these patterns develop, we may start to experience more negative emotions surrounding the relationship. If we feel like we’re in control, we’re likely to feel more critical or pressured. If we feel like our partner is in control, we may feel victimized or imposed upon. Unsurprisingly, studies have shown that having our partner exercise dominance leads to anger and resentment, while having our partner be submissive can make us feel guilty. As explained in the book Interpersonal Relationships:

Equity theory predicts that a relationship in which a partner is over-benefitted or under-benefitted will not be a happy one. Because the imbalance generates psychological distress, which erodes the relationship, under-benefitted individuals tend to feel angry, resentful and deprived. Those who are over-benefitted may feel shame, guilt and discomfort.

Based on these destructive effects, for any couple, it’s worth considering and challenging the power structures that may be in place in their relationship. It’s helpful to catch on to these patterns, many of which are characteristic of what my father Dr. Robert Firestone terms a “fantasy bond,” an illusion of connection that replaces real relating and allows couples to overstep each other’s boundaries and function as a single unit. Genuine loving actions are replaced with the form and routine of being a couple. As we develop this type of bond and see the other person as an extension of ourselves, we’re more likely to act out controlling or submissive behaviors, no longer respecting our separateness.

When we catch on to these patterns, we can break out of the power dynamics that lead to feelings of inequality in the relationship. For example, if we notice that one of us always decides where we go to dinner, we should let the other person choose. If one of us has stopped seeing friends or participating in activities we loved because of submitting to our partner’s interests, we should make a point of resuming our interests again. We should both be supportive of the things that light each other up, whether sharing these activities or enjoying them independently. Relationships stay lively and exciting when we support rather than control each other.

As we challenge ourselves to be more equal in our relationships, we’ll start to catch on to many subtle and not-so-subtle ways we may be sending messages to our partner. It’s important to recognize that it isn’t always the louder or stronger personality who’s exerting power. The one who’s yelling doesn’t necessarily control the relationship. Many people engage in passive aggressive behaviors and manipulations in an, often subconscious, effort to control their partner. Rather than overtly say what we want, we show what we want through elusive behaviors. Whether we yell at our partner or ice them, because we didn’t get our way, we’re sending a message about how we want him or her to behave. Whether we punish our partner by storming out or by falling apart, we’re likely inciting guilt that teaches the person what is and isn’t acceptable.

In every case, it’s better to be adult, that is, to be mature and direct in our communication. We should always aim to treat our partner with respect. We can create a spirit of equality by seeing each other as two whole people with our own unique points of view and desires. We can offer each other a balanced exchange of thoughts and affections, which leads to a natural give and take in the relationship.

It isn’t our duty or our right to be the boss in our relationship, even if we think we’re helping the other person by doing so. Instead, we can be a team, supporting each other in our strengths and being honest about our shortcomings. In doing so, we offer each other new possibilities, rather than limiting each other in our growth and experience. By maintaining equality, we can create a long-lasting romantic relationship, where both people feel fulfilled.

    How Do EpiPens Work?

The price of EpiPens has increased more than 400 percent since 2007. People who need to keep them on hand — often because they may need the emergency drug in case they have a life-threatening allergic reaction — brought the price increase to light, and eventually it reached Congress: In a letter to Mylan, the company that makes EpiPens, Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa has now asked the company to explain its pricing.

    But how do EpiPens work?

EpiPens are a type of epinephrine auto-injector, which means they work by automatically injecting a dose of the hormone epinephrine (also called adrenaline) into a person’s body. This could be done, for example, during a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. [9 Weirdest Allergies]

In a person with anaphylaxis, the immune system releases a flood of chemicals in response to an allergen, according to the Mayo Clinic. These chemicals can cause an onslaught of severe and life-threatening symptoms throughout the body, including a drop in blood pressure and constricted airways, the Mayo Clinic says.

A person can die from anaphylaxis if his or her heart stops beating or the person stops breathing. These symptoms can come on quickly, so it’s important to get a person medical treatment immediately.

Epinephrine works by reversing the symptoms of anaphylaxis. For example, a person’s blood pressure plummets during an anaphylactic reaction because the blood vessels relax and dilate — epinephrine causes the blood vessels to constrict, which raises blood pressure, according to Mylan, the maker of EpiPens.

In addition, anaphylaxis can cause a person’s airways to constrict, making it difficult for that person to breathe. Epinephrine relaxes the muscles of the airways so that the person can breathe, according to Mylan. Epinephrine also increases a person’s heart rate, which helps improve blood flow.

Why This Mom Won’t Let Her Daughter Watch ‘The Bachelor’

The “Bachelor” franchise has firmly established a strong presence in the pop culture landscape, reaching viewers across many demographics. Clearly kids are not immune to its influence either.

On Wednesday, Australian mom and blogger Constance Hall posted a photo of her 7-year-old daughter, Billie-Violet, who asked her if she could watch “The Bachelor.” In the caption, the mom explains why she said no.

Addressing Billie-Violet, Hall writes, “I have had to reside myself and give in to the great competition that is our society. Your little lives are full to the brim with competing against each other, sometimes it’s a miracle that kids leave childhood with any friends at all.”

Hall lists some of the competitions she’s observed between children, from running races to earning class prizes to seeing who’s hair is the longest.

“But do you know what one thing you should NEVER ever compete for is?” she adds. “Love.”

Drawing from her store of mommy wisdom, Hall offers this advice to Billie-Violet:

Because there are no winners and there are no losers with love. In your life you will love a man and he will love someone else, it happens to everyone. But that someone else didn’t win and you didn’t lose. You might meet someone else, you might decide you like women, you might just love being alone. But you will never lose.

And do you want to know the most important reason I won’t let you watch The Bachelor?

Because the day your friends fall in love should bring you SOOOOOO much joy. The absolute funnest part of falling in love is debriefing and dissecting and repeating every single thing that he said to you with…… Your friends, because they WANT to know, they love the fact that you are in love. They don’t sit in a corner at a cocktail party staring at you and bitching about you to other girls who they also hate because they are all COMPETING for love.

Hall acknowledges that she watches “The Bachelor” but notes that it’s because she’s “old enough know that it is fiction” and enjoys “a bit of sh*t fiction” every now and then.

“But your fresh young impressionable brain should be planning how you and every other little sweet girl you know are going to join forces and lead this beautiful world instead of poisoning yourself with sh*t TV,” she concludes.

The mom’s post clearly struck a chord with other parents, as it currently has over 77,000 likes on Facebook. The comments section is filled with responses from fellow parents, sharing their similar reasons for not letting their young children watch “The Bachelor” franchise.

As for Billie-Violet, she’ll have to find something a little more empowering to occupy herself, and we’re confident her mom may be able to help.

For more on “The Bachelor,” listen to HuffPost’s “Here To Make Friends” podcast.

    Capturing the News

    Capturing the News

Anthony Collings found himself in his share of difficult situations in his thirty-four years as a newsman. Like being captured by AK-47-toting Syrians in Lebanon in 1981 while looking for missiles that threatened a new outbreak of hostilities with Israel, or being “detained” by the KGB in Moscow in 1967 during his first foreign posting for the Associated Press filing stories about Soviet dissidents. Name a hot spot, and Collings has likely been there. From AP correspondent to Newsweek bureau chief to CNN reporter, he covered the Middle East, Rome, Moscow, London, Paris, and Washington. Now he has gathered stories about his work in a book that is both a journalist’s memoir and a commentary on the current ethical crises in the news media and how to address them. Brimming with entertaining stories about journalism, especially the chaotic early years at CNN when he and his colleagues established the first major cable news network, Collings’s book reveals the dangers and pressures of covering the news and the difficulties of overcoming obstacles to the truth. He recalls smuggling tapes out of Poland after the Communists had imposed martial law; flying dangerously near Libya’s “Line of Death”; interviewing world figures from Brezhnev to Kaddafi and Arafat; and winning awards for covering Iran-Contra and the Oklahoma City bombing. Collings brings fresh insights to the Oliver North affair and examines how the press was suckered in its coverage of the Jessica Lynch prisoner-of-war story in 2003. He voices his concerns regarding oversimplified reporting of complex issues and poses provocative questions about covering terrorism. In this book, Collings presents an insider’s appraisal of the American news media’s failings and accomplishments. Easy to read, informative, and thoughtful, Capturing the News will enlighten general readers interested in how journalists cover current affairs, while offering newsmen food for thought about the craft and ethics of journalism.

Creating Change: Lessons From a Private-Prison Victory

    Sometimes you win.

That can be an unfamiliar sensation for people on the left. When you fight for good causes against powerful forces and overwhelming odds, you lose a lot of battles.

But sometimes you win. Take last week’s announcement from the Justice Department that it’s planning to phase out the use of for-profit prisons. Like many such victories, it is only a qualified success. But qualified success is still success.

This victory seemed politically impossible as recently as last year. What changed? Like many such victories, it began with consciousness. Attacks on the “prison industrial complex” were once considered the province of radical activists and crusading (but possibly lonely) left journalists.

Some church groups got wind of the issue in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and divested themselves of for-profit prison stock. Writers and thinkers and activists continued to shine a light on the problem. Michelle Alexander, author of “The New Jim Crow,” has been writing about this issue for years. Books like “Prison Profiteers: Who Makes Money From Mass Incarceration” explored the issue in depth.

Journalists – from the Nation, the Marshall Project, Mother Jones, and elsewhere – have continued to provide the public with more information about the problem. Activists in the communities that have suffered most from incarceration, including Black Lives Matter, fought to highlight the problem.

The idea entered the mainstream world of electoral politics last year, when Bernie Sanders made it a centerpiece of his presidential campaign. That move was met with some surprise in insider circles, since prison reform has long been considered a “hard left” issue. Progressive organizations picked up the banner.

Soon Hillary Clinton felt compelled to return the campaign contributions she had received from lobbyists who represent for-profit prisons. Within months she was telling Black Lives Matter activists that she, too, would close down for-profit prisons if she became president.

And now comes this decision from the Justice Department. This idea moved from the margins of our political discourse to its heart. In this brief history, we can see something like a life cycle begin to take shape:

An idea was brought into consciousness.

It was written about and discussed.

Then activists promoted it – in the streets, in conversations, and in organized campaigns

And it became part of an insurgent political candidacy.

Now, despite big money’s overwhelming hold on our two-party system, it has become the de facto position of the Democratic Party. Concrete action has been taken. The New York Times Editorial Board, that national arbiter of liberal thought, has echoed the message that private prisons are corrupt, violent, inefficient and wasteful.

There’s much more to be done. Only about 8 percent of federal inmates – less than 23,000 people – are housed in for-profit prisons. The vast majority of people in the for-profit prison system are incarcerated in state or local facilities, and won’t be affected by this decision. For-profit facilities for detaining immigrants – where some of the worst abuses have taken place – won’t be affected by this decision.

Profiteering will continue to impact the lives of federal prisoners through corporate ventures that medical care, phone and video calls, and even ankle bracelets.

What’s more, the affected prisoners represent a tiny fraction of the 2.2 million Americans currently in prison.

Much more needs to be done. The carceral state runs on greed, on racism, on social control, on fear and on vengeance. These forces are not easily eliminated. The commodification of human bodies, especially black and brown bodies, will continue.

But this is a victory all the same – an instructive one.

Lesson #1: We can’t depend on political leaders to change the system. Change is an inside/outside game, and it usually happens from the outside in. It took the radical visionaries, the street activists, the writers, the church groups, Bernie Sanders and the progressive organizations to make this happen. Lastly, it took insiders willing to listen and respond.

Together these forces form a kind of ecosystem. Want to change things? Find a place there and inhabit it.

Lesson #2: 23,000 prisoners are a tiny fraction of this nation’s bloated prison population. Still, an improvement to the lives of 23,000 people is worth celebrating.

That improvement is an opportunity to communicate the need for much broader change – not only in the management of our current prison population, but in the more fundamental problem of our nation’s destructive addiction to incarceration. Like all addictions, it’s a parasite that is destroying the host. When we internally colonize millions of our own people, we undermine our society from within.

This can also become a teaching moment regarding our political system’s misguided infatuation with privatization. Politicians in both parties have told us for decades that the private sector is better than government at providing many public services. Our experience with for-profit prisons has taught us otherwise, as has our experience with highways and other privatization projects.

That makes this an opportunity to renew our understanding of the social compact. It allows us to emphasize the value of communitarian idealism over individualistic greed.

The task of promoting these principles is profound, challenging, and daunting. There will be many setbacks. The moral arc of the universe may bend toward justice, but it can look more like a jagged line than a curve. If you take on this work you will lose, over and over. That’s a fact of life. But here’s another:

    Sometimes you win.

What Crutches Taught Me About Life

It was a beautiful, Wednesday morning when I hobbled my way onto the campus bus and entered the Health Center. I was in a state of utter confusion and shock. Something that was just a mild discomfort the night before had turned into an unbearable pain which wouldn’t allow me to put any pressure on my left foot. I knew I had to get it checked.

As I tried urgently to get a last minute doctor’s appointment, I was forced to explain my situation again and again – to the front desk, the nurse, the other nurse, the doctor – and each time, it was the same flow, the same look of disbelief:

    What’s the problem?

Well, I can’t put any weight on my left foot. (*as I’m leaning my whole body on my right side)

Might be a sprain, let’s get it looked at. What’d you do?

Umm, I landed it on it poorly while skipping.

(Look of disbelief) …did you say skipping?

Yes… skipping. I was joyfully skipping down the sidewalk.

*Chuckle* (probably laughing hysterically on the inside)

Once we got over the initial disbelief, they got me into an x-ray. An hour later, I was informed that it was just a minor ankle sprain (no broken bones), prescribed to give it some rest, and then handed a pair of crutches – for the first time in my life.

After a quick “how-to” from the nurse, I quickly crutched my way out the front doors ready to start the day. Little did I know that I was about to embark on one of the toughest, most insightful, most gratitude-inducing, perspective-changing moments of my life.

Lesson #1: We live in such an able-bodied world and we don’t even realize it.

Five minutes after I left the Health Center, I was struggling to step onto the high stairs of the campus trolley. An hour later, I was trying to wrestle open the doors to my apartment building, which were too heavy and didn’t have handicap access.  It felt as though I had just entered into an entirely different reality. I went from able-bodied to physically challenged (albeit temporarily) and suddenly the world became so much harder to deal with.

For the first time in my life, I noticed and was heavily influenced by every single building that had no elevator, all the ramps that would abruptly end and lead to stairs, doors that would have poorly placed handicap buttons where you’d have to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit. I realized just how poorly designed our world is, made entirely for people who can perfectly walk, see, hear, and smell.

What’s worse is that by having infrastructure designed only to serve those who are able-bodied, there becomes an implicit marginalization of those who are not. In order to keep up with a crowd, I would have to find elevators and ramps that were often created haphazardly or took an extra five minutes to even find. On a day-to-day basis, I found even my own friends overlooking me as I crutched along slowly from class-to-class; in many ways, the crutches became an invisibility cloak, as most people chose to ignore and walk past that which seemed abnormal.

Lesson #2: We are incredibly inefficient with our time, energy, and resources.

It was only when I could no longer walk easily that I had to learn how to optimize every aspect of my life that required movement.

Need to find a place to sit? Let me make sure that’s within a few steps of a bathroom and water fountain.

Want to hang out with a friend? Let me combine it with lunch, so they can help me carry my food.

So much attention had to be diverted on just surviving and accomplishing basic tasks like eating, going to the bathroom, and getting to class, that I realized how much energy I used to waste in making ten trips to the same place for different errands. With the luxury of being able to walk, we tend to be much less concerned with the amount of time and energy we’re wasting on a daily basis.

Lesson #3: People can be so kind and loving.

While the crutches were certainly tough and came with their frustrations, they also opened me up to special moments of human generosity and kindness. For the first time since I was in diapers, I found myself in situations in which I physically could not do basic tasks without someone’s assistance. As a result, every bit of support that I received mattered.

No matter where I was, I would almost inevitably encounter two or three friends, acquaintances, or even strangers who would ask “Can I help?”. But the ones that really touched my heart were the people who didn’t just inquire if I needed assistance but went a step further and helped before I could even ask.

It was the classmate who would see me enter the lecture hall and immediately set up my chair and carefully place a seat in front of me so that I could elevate my ankle.

The stranger who helped to carry my backpack saying “I’ve been on crutches before, I know how much it can slow you down”.

The person who went and brought my car to me when I was struggling to get to the nearest trolley stop.

The numerous friends who would check in with me every few hours to make sure I had enough to eat, that I had a ride to get to the bathroom, and that I had enough people to keep me company.

With every door that someone opened, food that someone brought to me, and assistance that someone gave for nothing in return, I felt so moved and filled with gratitude and hope.

Lesson #4: Never expect people to always be there for you.

As wonderful as it was to have so much help from people, I quickly realized that no one could ever be there for me all the time. Inevitably, I’d be faced with a situation in which people just weren’t available or able to help out.

Just because I was in need of more physical assistance than those around me didn’t mean that the world would spin around me, always attending to my needs. Naturally, people would have other meetings to go to, errands to attend, things to do, and who was I to insist that they stop living their lives?

Above all, one of hardest challenges that I faced was mental. No matter how many were physically there for me, very few could help in the battle to stay positive. It was one of the most lonely things to experience when I realized that no one could always be there for me.

However, those moments, no matter how many times they kicked me down, they also pushed me to develop an inner strength and stronger connection with myself that I would not have had to build otherwise. They tested my character, my values, my worldview, and forced me to remain humble but become mentally strong.

Lesson #5: Impatience is not a virtue.

From the moment I was given my crutches, it felt as though life was giving me a lesson in patience in as many ways as it possibly could, just hoping that I might finally get the message.

There were just so many ways in which I was forced to slow down or personally suffered because I was being too impatient.

A week after the incident, I was starting to feel better so, without knowing any better, I stopped wearing crutches. Within just two days, my ankle began to hurt again and I found out that I had slowed my recovery. Better yet, a few days later, I had a flight to India that I had to go on alone.

The day of the flight, I went back to the Health Center begging them to figure out a way that I could travel without crutches – there was just no way that I could bring all my luggage while also limping on two sticks. Unfortunately, they refused to budge – no matter how minimal the sprain, rest was the only option – I had to go with my silver sticks. Once again, I was forced to slow down and avoid over-exerting.

While I was in India, I insisted that I could cover large distances on my own and without fully realizing it, I was moving faster on my crutches than people with average walking speeds. Within the second day of being there, my right foot began to give way and was struggling to hold my weight. Suddenly, neither of my feet were able to carry me, even with the help of the crutches. And once again, life had found its way of teaching me patience, in this case, by literally forcing me to stop and temporarily preventing me from being able to move.

Ultimately, it was only when I slowed down, took rest, and became more deliberate in making decisions that I was able to properly recover.

Lesson #6: Look underneath the surface.

As a relatively healthy looking male whose injury wasn’t always obvious or apparent (especially if I was sitting down), I was frequently subject to misjudgments from people who wouldn’t realize that I had a physical injury.

People would accidently insist that I come help them with carrying things, usually until they saw my crutches.

People would ask why I wasn’t walking over with them, not realizing that I was usually waiting for a car or some form of transportation.

Even once the doctor had given me the go-ahead to stop using crutches, I had to undergo another two months of slow recovery and physical therapy in order to bring my ankle back to (almost) full strength and motion. Without the crutches, my injury and recovering ankle were even more inconspicuous, meaning I was also subject to more misunderstanding.

People would get annoyed at me for walking too slowly, not realizing that I hadn’t walked properly in almost a month.

People would give me strange looks for taking the elevator to the second floor, not realizing that it was still painful for me to walk up stairs.

At the end of the day, I was undergoing a struggle that was essentially hidden from the public eye, making me a perfect target for judgment from people who didn’t take the time to look underneath the surface and realize what was going on.

And the truth is that whether it’s a subtle physical problem, depression and anxiety, or some trouble in our personal lives, we are all undergoing a constant struggle. Having had to experience the burden of living with physical crutches has ultimately helped me better appreciate the burden of those of us living with crutches of our own.

    Chaos Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

Life can be pretty chaotic can’t it?

With the responsibilities we have in our outside world – at work, in the community, with the people we know – and the responsibilities we have inside our home (bills to pay, meals to prepare, paperwork to file, cupboards to sort, washing to do) there doesn’t seem to be much respite.

Chaos seems to reign inside and outside our home, and at times inside and outside our body. And that creates a turbulent energy which I believe is impossible to sustain long term.

But what if life wasn’t like this? What if life wasn’t chaotic in every aspect? What if the areas of your life that you could control were more of a sanctuary? How would that make you feel?

I know that life throws us curve balls and that at times it all seems too overwhelming – trust me, I’ve been there too. But that’s exactly the reason why it’s so important to slow down and remove some of the chaos from your life. To connect with what’s important to you and bring in the concept of sanctuary to your body, home, life – in whatever way works for you.

I know there are some people who thrive on chaos and I’m really happy for them. The fact that their body can keep them going amongst the stress and the exhaustion and the chaos is admirable. But I know from past experience that this simply won’t work for me. And, to be honest, it wouldn’t work for a lot of people I know – and maybe it won’t work for you either.

What you may have noticed is that more and more people are living a chaotic life – and really aren’t that happy with it.

The rushing around starts small. At first it doesn’t seem like chaos, it seems more like busyness. But over time it escalates. Work hours get longer, responsibilities expand, connection with the electronic world increases to the point that we forget what connection with our partner, friends, children, family, ourselves, felt like.

Once entrenched in this pattern it’s hard to shift, particularly if you feel you have no control over your life. Perhaps your boss expects you to work longer hours for the same pay. Perhaps you have expectations of yourself that are other-worldly, where you work all hours of the night and day and rarely switch off. Or perhaps you’re so disconnected from who you are that you have no way of seeing how far off track you’ve become.

I don’t think life has to be like this.

That isn’t because I don’t know what it’s like to work all hours or feel disconnected from my purpose. It’s because I’ve worked all hours and felt disconnected from my purpose that I know life doesn’t have to be like this.

I’ve worked toward getting back to what my life looked like before all the rushing and the overwhelm and the chaos started. And to be honest it feels a lot more purposeful, a lot more in flow and, most importantly, a lot more connected.

I’d love to say that I found this connection by sitting on a beach in the Mediterranean sipping cocktails and working on my tan, but that’s far from the truth. I run a busy household and a business – there’s a lot on both of those job descriptions! So I’m sure it wouldn’t surprise you to hear that at times I feel like the chaos has seeped in again.

Thankfully I’ve become aware of the chaos when it does start to rear its ugly head. It may be the slight adrenalin feeling in my body, starting at my heart and rippling through my veins. It might be a rushed morning where everything goes less than smoothly and we leave the house frazzled and scattered. It could be my crazy long to-do list which in reality means nothing compared to what my life could look like if it wasn’t chaotic.

I’ve become good at recognising the signs of chaos in my life and shifting gear when it does rise up. I’m not a reactionary kind of girl so before chaos even has a chance to descend upon me I actively work toward diminishing it.

My chaos-doesn’t-live-here list looks like this.

    • I meditate each day
    • I go to bed when I’m tired
    • I eat well
    • I exercise
    • I hug my husband and child
    • I spend time with women who light me up
    • I go on retreat
    • I spend time in nature
    • I play with the dog
    • I create with my hands
    • I have afternoon naps when I can
    • I watch TV that is fun and entertaining (ie not the news)
    • I choose service providers who I enjoy spending time with
    • I stay away from anything that I know will increase my stress levels
    • I say no, and I say yes, when it feels right
    • I listen to what my body is telling me – and I give it that

Your chaos-doesn’t-live-here list might be quite different to mine. If you don’t have one I highly recommend you create one. Look at your life as it is right now and start to recognise the activities you do each day that help kick your chaos to the curb. And most importantly, recognise the tasks and activities you do that bring chaos into your life and work toward diminishing them.

    Why?

Because I believe you can live a more connected life by removing the chaos that surrounds you.

By making the choice to disconnect from it and reconnect with what’s truly important to you, your heart, your soul.

It’s a choice I know has made a huge change in my life and could possibly change your life in ways you can’t even imagine. So why not give it a go? What have you got to lose?

Your Pocket Is What Cures You: The Politics of Health in Senegal (Studies in Medical Anthropology)

Your Pocket Is What Cures You: The Politics of Health in Senegal (Studies in Medical Anthropology)

In the wake of structural adjustment programs in the 1980s and health reforms in the 1990s, the majority of sub-Saharan African governments spend less than ten dollars per capita on health annually, and many Africans have limited access to basic medical care. Using a community-level approach, anthropologist Ellen E. Foley analyzes the implementation of global health policies and how they become intertwined with existing social and political inequalities in Senegal. Your Pocket Is What Cures You examines qualitative shifts in health and healing spurred by these reforms, and analyzes the dilemmas they create for health professionals and patients alike. It also explores how cultural frameworks, particularly those stemming from Islam and Wolof ethnomedicine, are central to understanding how people manage vulnerability to ill health. While offering a critique of neoliberal health policies, Your Pocket Is What Cures You remains grounded in ethnography to highlight the struggles of men and women who are precariously balanced on twin precipices of crumbling health systems and economic decline. Their stories demonstrate what happens when market-based health reforms collide with material, political, and social realities in African societies.

Senator McCain, the Constitution, and Sgt. Bergdahl

It is not that United States Senator John McCain (R-AZ) should be loved less, but that the Constitution should be loved more that he should be rebuked for declaring that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is “clearly a deserter” who should be punished. Senator McCain–like all other federal or state officers–took an oath to defend, not to besmirch the Constitution under Article VI.

All civilized jurisprudence celebrates the presumption of innocence. United States Chief Justice Edward White elaborated in Coffin v .United States (1895): “The principle that there is a presumption of innocence in favor of the accused is the undoubted law, axiomatic and elementary, and its enforcement lies at the foundation of the administration of our criminal law.”

A companion constitutional principle enshrined in Article I, section 9, clause 3 condemns bills of attainder, i.e., the legislative infliction of punishment without the procedural safeguards afforded by a judicial trial. As Justice Felix Frankfurter taught, “The history of liberty has largely been the history of observance of procedural safeguards.”

At present, Sgt. Bergdahl faces trial by general court-martial for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy for walking off his Army outpost in Afghanistan in 2009. Senator McCain has impaired Sgt. Bergdahl’s constitutional presumption of innocence by declaring him “clearly a deserter.” The Senator insistence that “I am not prejudging” was no more convincing than the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland: “Sentence first–verdict afterwards.” Mr. McCain has not retracted his support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has played judge, jury, and prosecutor too to vilify Bergdahl as a “dirty rotten traitor.”

The Senator has also used his legislative influence over the armed forces in attempting to coerce punishment for Sgt. Bergdahl . Last October, Mr. McCain responded to Lt. Col. Mark Visger’s recommendation of neither jail time nor a punitive discharge for accused with the implied threat, “If it comes out that [Bergdahl] has no punishment, we’re going to have a hearing in the Senate Armed Services Committee.” As Chairman, Senator McCain wields substantial influence over military weapons and budgets and the appointments and promotions of military officers. The spirit if not the letter of the bill of attainder prohibition denounces the exertion of legislative power to prescribe judicial punishment for a named individual. And as St. Paul preached in 2 Corinthians 3:6, “the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

The United States Supreme Court also instructed in Berger v. United States (1935) that the government’s interest in a “criminal prosecution is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done.” And justice requires the appearance of justice, not coerced verdicts or punishments.

Senator McCain similarly dishonored due process and the presumption of innocence on March 26, 2014, when he asserted that Edward Snowden was working for the Russians: “Sure. Not a doubt in my mind,” he responded when asked by the Washington Examiner.

Mr. Snowden, however, has never been charged with acting as a foreign agent for Russia, and Senator McCain has never adduced proof other than his personal conviction that he has. Last July, Snowden wrote the following which conflicts with the Senator’s narrative: “Putin has signed a repressive new law that violates not only human rights but common sense. Dark day for Russia.”

Senator McCain should retract his constitutional blasphemies. The rule of law is too important to be crucified on a cross of pique or anger.

Why The Humane Society President Changed His Mind About Working With Michael Vick

When NFL star Michael Vick pled guilty to running a dog fighting ring on his property in 2007, he sparked instant and intense outage across the country. Vick’s violence against pit bulls ― he also admitted to killing six to eight dogs by hanging or drowning ― infuriated animal lovers, and one activist who was particularly disgusted was Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle.

As Pacelle told Oprah during an interview for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” he and the Humane Society were very vocal in their condemnation of Vick’s horrifying acts.

“We demanded his prosecution because what he did to the animals was barbaric. It was despicable,” Pacelle says.

Vick ended up suspended from the NFL and served 19 months in prison. Then, the disgraced athlete reached out to the very people who had written him off the moment his cruelty surfaced publicly.

“One of his people called me just before he was getting out of prison, and they said, ‘Michael would like to work with the Humane Society of the United States on its anti-dog-fighting work,’” Pacelle recalls.

Pacelle, who figured the request was little more than a PR move, said no and hung up the phone. “I thought, ‘OK, this guy wants to do a makeover. He wants to use me for that,’” he says.

But then, Pacelle began to reflect on himself and his mission.

“I said, ‘What am I about at the Humane Society?’ I mean, am I not about changing people for the better? That people who are doing the wrong thing start to move and do the right thing?” he says. “That’s what I do. I’m not just talking to people who are ‘of the faith.’ If I’m doing that, that’s just an echo chamber.”

Pacelle reconsidered Vick’s proposal not just for this reason, but for another powerful benefit as well.

“I also thought, ‘What if Michael Vick put boots on the ground, sort of talking to these kids in communities where they’re getting pit bulls for the wrong reasons … and told them about the evils of dog fighting?’” Pacelle says. “From a campaigner’s perspective, that’s going to allow me to reach tens of thousands of kids that I would not have an audience with.”

Ultimately, Pacelle adds, he hoped that working with Vick would also send a signal to society that would make people become more conscious of their own behaviors regarding animals, whether that’s through their fashion choices or eating habits.

“I’m sending a signal that we’re all sinners when it comes to animals,” he says.

“SuperSoul Sunday” airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

    Another insight from Pacelle:

On And Off The Field, These Paralympians Work #WithoutLimits

Paralympians are elite athletes at the pinnacle of their sports.

Thanks to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 26 years ago, today’s American Paralympians are able to train as hard and compete like their Olympic counterparts, as access to sports and sports facilities is more of the norm rather than the exception. Similarly, thanks to increased accessibility requirements imposed by the International Olympic Committee for host cities and the impact of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, accessible sports facilities are increasingly available internationally as well. Yet, in many ways Paralympians are benefiting from a more “equal playing field” than we see in most workplaces around the world.

Unfortunately, not all persons with disabilities have achieved equal status with their non-disabled counterparts in the workplace. Even with greater access to buildings and facilities in the United States, many persons with disabilities still struggle to find equal employment. The Paralympics offer a success story demonstrating not only how the athletes have achieved equality through sports, but how they are often also leaders in their professional careers.

The Paralympics offer a success story demonstrating not only how the athletes have achieved equality through sports, but how they are often also leaders in their professional careers.

Paralympians have more to contribute than the sports in which they compete. When Team USA Paralympians retire from elite sports competition, many go on to successfully work in jobs in a variety of professions such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, financial advisors, and more. To highlight the success stories of these athletes, the State Department has launched a Social Media Awareness campaign #WithoutLimits.

Between now and Wednesday, September 7, which marks the opening day of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, we will share the profiles of up to 40 international and American Paralympians and Parasport athletes in their workplace. Each athlete will be featured holding a photo of themselves in their Paralympic sport to demonstrate the ways in which they “work #WithoutLimits.”

    Eslam Mohamed,
    Paralympic Swimmer

Elsam Mohamed is pictured smiling in front of a Juhayna sign. He is holding a photo of himself swimming.

After Mr. Eslam Mohamed of Egypt was paralyzed by a car accident in January 2012, he decided he wanted to learn how to swim and compete on a professional level. Within nine months of his accident, Eslam started representing Egypt in local and international competitions. He also helped establish the Egyptian national team in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He eventually achieved a couple of bronze medals in the open championship of Alcorcon in Madrid in March 2015. When he is not competing in sports, Eslam works as a human resource business partner in one of the biggest companies in food and beverages in Egypt, JUHAYNA. He also volunteers his time as a disability advocate and Vice-President at Alhassan Foundation for Differently Abled Inclusion, whose work is focused on wheelchair users in Egypt.

    Laura Veleanu,
    Paralympic Alpine Skier

Ms. Laura Veleanu is a 26-year-old Paralympic Alpine Skier from Romania, and is also a physician at the Institute of Pathology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. She started competing at a very early age, even after a motorcycle accident in 2006 that caused her right leg to be amputated below the knee. She debuted in the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada, which marked the first time in history Romania was represented at the Paralympic Winter Games. Her best results include fifth place in slalom at the Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi, Russia; a bronze medal in slalom at the Paralympic World Championship in 2015 in Panorama, Canada; and, silver medal in giant slalom at the World Cup Finals in 2016 in Aspen, Colorado. She is currently preparing for the Paralympic Winter Games which will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018. Referred to as “the woman with the open heart” by her supervisor, she believes that people with disabilities should have the same opportunities in the workplace as non-disabled people.

Member of Paralympic Sled Hockey Team

Mr. Victor Calise competed on the first U.S. Paralympic sled hockey team in 1998 in Nagano, Japan. He now works directly for the Mayor of New York City as the Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for Persons with Disabilities, where is he focusing on making New York the most accessible city in the world through transportation options, employing people with disabilities, and providing greater access to city services and education. On and off the ice, Victor works #WithoutLimits.

    Zahra Nemati,
    Paralympic and Olympic Archer

    ap photo

Zahra Nemati smiles during an elimination round of the individual archery competition at the Sambadrome venue during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 9, 2016.

Ms. Zahra Nemati of Iran secured qualification slots for archery in both 2016 Paralympics and Olympics. She was selected to carry Iran’s flag into the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, an honor bestowed on her by fellow teammates. In London in 2012, Zahra set a Paralympic record on her way to gold in the women’s individual recurve W1/W2, and she picked up a bronze medal in the women’s team recurve open. In Iran she is one of the most popular athletes in any sport. Her success resulted in significant media coverage back home, and inspired other women to take up Parasport, particularly archery. In June, 2014, she addressed a United Nations panel called “Sports for inclusive development: Empowering persons with disabilities through sport.” On and off the archery range, Zahra works to increase opportunities for women #WithoutLimits.

All of these individuals — and many more Paralympians who are being profiled in this campaign — have achieved similar greatness and success in their sport. Many also work on behalf of the disability community, either in mentoring the next generation of Paralympian athletes, or advocating for and improving the lives of persons with disabilities who want to achieve similar success #Withoutlimits. We are grateful for what these competitors achieve on and off the field, especially leveraging their status as Paralympians and their professional advancement to serve as a beacon of hope to so many people with disabilities around the world.

Sociology and Psychology for the Dental Team: An Introduction to Key Topics

Sociology and Psychology for the Dental Team: An Introduction to Key Topics

The role that the social and behavioural sciences play in the daily practice of dentistry is now an essential part of all dentistry training, but it can often seem distant from the reality of daily clinical practice. Dentists often ask: what is sociology? Why do I need to know about psychology? Why do I need sociology and psychology to be an effective dentist? How can they help improve my clinical practice? This new textbook answers these important questions and shows how the social and behavioural sciences can inform the practice of dentistry and allied healthcare services in the twenty-first century. It provides a comprehensive, accessible introduction to sociology and psychology for students and members of the dental team with no prior knowledge of the subject, and although the book assumes little or no previous knowledge of psychology or sociology, it also provides enough depth to meet the needs of those with some background in these fields. Throughout, the links between sociology and psychology and everyday practice are emphasized and explained and theoretical concepts are put into the context of everyday clinical work. The authors have extensive experience in teaching and researching the social and behavioural sciences from undergraduate to post-doctoral levels. This book will be an indispensable teaching aid within dental health education, and other allied health and social care disciplines.

Former Miss Universe Becomes U.S. Citizen In Time To Cast Vote Against Trump

Former Miss Universe Alicia Machado became a U.S. citizen on Friday, just in time to cast her vote against the man who she says taunted her about her weight and accent when she was 19 years old: former pageant owner and current GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

The Venezuelan-born pageant winner, who took the oath of allegiance in Miami, shared the big news on Instagram. “[I’m] so proud and inspiration to be a U.S. Citizen! I’ll be voting!” she wrote in the caption, adding that she will be investing all of her power and support in Hillary Clinton.

“Miss Housekeeping and miss Piggy Can Vote,” she added, referencing the cruel names she’s said Trump used to taunt her.

In May, Machado told Inside Edition she faced verbal abuse from Trump “all the time,” commenting that she gained weight after she was crowned Miss Universe in 1996.

“He called me Miss Piggy,” she said. “I was very depressed.”

Trump publicly called the former pageant queen an “eating machine” in an interview with Howard Stern and has even admitted to pressuring her to lose weight.

Machado also told Inside Edition that Trump made fun of her accent and called her “Miss Housekeeping.”

Following the May report, Clinton tweeted her support for Machado. “Congratulations on becoming a U.S. citizen, Alicia. Enjoy casting that vote.” Oh, she will.

Speaking with Inside Edition Friday, Machado said she became American citizen for her daughter, her country and to exercise her right to vote. “The United States is in a very important moment and we need to take the power to go and vote,” she said.

Now Machado, who recently appeared in an endorsement photo for Clinton, is dedicating her time to encouraging other Latinos to register to vote.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
