Fletcher Mckenzie and the Passage to Whole

Fletcher Mckenzie and the Passage to Whole

Fletcher McKenzie is no ordinary fourteen-year-old living in western Maine. He would inherit his family’s food business in less than four years. But first he has to save not only the business itself but his mother and comatose father. Fletcher’s adventures start when he notices a mysterious ancient portrait of Mollyockett, a Pequawket Indian who lived in the 1700s, hanging in his father’s bedroom. Her eyes seemed to come alive and stare directly at Fletcher. And after seeing the poem Fletcher found on the back of the painting, Uncle Woodrow said, ‘What I tell you, you mustn’t tell a soul.’ “When Fletcher discovers a passage that has been a McKenzie family secret for generations, this fast-paced, page-turning adventure begins in earnest. The passage leads to another world called Whole, where Fletcher unlocks a secret power and battles a ancient enemy of the McKenzie family. This book is truly a wonderful read. The historical tidbits are enchanting; the action, thrilling. In fact, I never knew I was reading a nutrition book! Read it and discover why many call Fletcher the American Harry Potter!” (Larry Stone, author, editor, publisher (author of The Story of the Bible, Noah: The Real Story, and Women of the Bible; publisher of Life’s Little Instruction Book).

Massive Cedar Sculpture Sent A Dozen FBI Workers To The Hospital

More than a million taxpayer dollars went toward installing ― and then removing ― a 15,000-pound cedar sculpture at the FBI’s field office in Miami after at least a dozen workers became seriously ill.

Last year, the General Services Administration, which leases office space to federal agencies, commissioned artist Ursula von Rydingsvard to create Cedrus, a 17-foot western red cedar sculpture. The structure, made of 30 individual pieces imported from Vancouver, resembled a massive tornado.

It certainly did some damage.

Cedrus looked impressive, but it soon began to make workers sick. According to documents obtained by Politico, the installation’s cedar dust triggered allergic reactions ― with the office’s only nurse suffering one of the worst.

“Upon the installation of the art sculpture, the nurse developed rhinitis, difficulty swallowing, sinus pressure, sneezing, has difficulty breathing and began to itch all over,” read a June 2015 internal FBI letter that Politico obtained.

A different employee’s “face became very swollen,” and another was hospitalized for 11 days.

The sculpture was removed months later and now sits in a storage facility in Maryland. The GSA “deep cleaned” the office spaces after wrapping Cedrus in plastic, the agency told Gizmodo.

GSA officials initially believed the sculpture was “worth more” than the $ 750,000 it paid, according to the internal documents. But it cost an estimated $ 412,000 to remove the sculpture, and ultimately cost taxpayers $ 1.2 million.

Maybe next time, try pine.

WATCH: Embracing the Mystery (Not Having All the Answers)

It can be very frustrating when we don’t know what to do… how to handle certain situations… what the future might bring. But, that’s how life is sometimes – we’re never going to know everything (unless you are Dr. Bernofsky…). So, we can let that be a source of energy-draining upset, or we can accept it. Maybe even embrace it. I hope this will help you do so.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

Trader Joe’s Recalls 2 Kinds Of Hummus In 30 States

Trader Joe’s is recalling two flavors of hummus that may be contaminated with listeria.

The recall includes packages of white bean and basil hummus and/or Mediterranean hummus with “use by” dates up to and including Dec. 15 and a printed plant identification code “C,” according to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recalled products come in 16-ounce tubs and were sold in as many as 30 states.

So far, no illnesses tied to the hummus have been reported. Bakkavor Foods USA, Inc., the company that produces the hummus, found bacteria in a product made using the same equipment as the hummus and has addressed the issue, the FDA reports.

Listeria bacterium can cause serious infections in anyone, though pregnant women, newborns, older adults and those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trader Joe’s says it has removed all potentially harmful hummus from store shelves. Customers who purchased the hummus are encouraged to throw it away or return it to Trader Joe’s for a full refund.

The recall comes on the heels of last month’s Sabra hummus recall, which was also issued due to listeria concerns.

We’ll snack on homemade guac for now, thanks.

Democrats To Trump Nominees: Show Us Your Taxes

WASHINGTON ― Democratic senators on Thursday proposed requiring all the senior-level appointees of President-elect Donald Trump to release their taxes ― something Trump himself, in a startling departure from the norm for presidential nominees, never got around to doing.

Arguing that Trump has done little to guard against conflicts of interest in his own dealings, Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said that the billionaires and millionaires Trump is selecting for his cabinet need to be vetted especially carefully.

“Donald Trump campaigned on a promise that he would drain the swamp,” Stabenow told reporters.

“But it seems [he] thinks the way to do that is by filling it with even bigger swamp creatures,” Murray said.

Among the super-rich would-be government officials are hedge fund billionaire Steven Mnuchin, billionaire investor Wilbur Ross and Amway billionaire Betsy DeVos, whom Trump has put forward as his picks for treasury secretary, commerce secretary and education secretary, respectively.

Mnuchin’s nomination would go through the Financial Services Committee, and under existing committee standards he would already be required to submit three years of tax returns.

But most other committees have not typically required tax forms. When committees meet at the start of the year to pass their internal rules and budgets, the Democrats say they will offer measures to require the new disclosure in all the panels.

“Our proposal is a roadmap for each committee chair to increase the openness and transparency among senior government officials,” Wyden said. “Government officials don’t get a free pass to flout our tax laws, abuse loopholes or hide money in shelters. The president-elect’s top officials are required to resolve conflicts of interest, and I believe they ought to be able to prove they follow the nation’s tax laws just like everybody else.”

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s possible, or perhaps likely, that Republicans will resist the idea, since increased disclosure could offer Democrats more information to use against Trump administration nominees.

But such records have proved important in the past. Wyden pointed out that in 2009, after Barack Obama had nominated then-Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) as secretary of health and human services, information in Daschle’s taxes led him to withdraw from consideration for the post.

The Democrats did not say how far they are willing to push to win the increased disclosure. When it was pointed out to them that Democrats could filibuster when the Senate formally votes to organize the committees at the start of the next session, they did not commit to such a blockade.

“At this point we’re talking to Republican colleagues, because this is basically in the interests of good government and transparency and accountability,” Stabenow said. “We’ll see what happens, and then we’ll make a decision from there.”

Stop Expecting Your Life to Be Like a Television Show

What is a hard thing to do in life? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Matthew Manning, on Quora:

What is a hard thing to do in life? Understanding that your life is not a television show.

One of the hardest things to understand about my life has been the fact that it is not episodic. That is to say, most of the time life is not full of “important stuff.” My life isn’t a television show. It is mostly the stuff that happens between each episode.

Most of the time, important stuff happens when you least expect it, and when you’re barely ready for it. The majority of your time will be spent between the important stuff. This includes:

  • Doing laundry.
  • Folding laundry.
  • Grocery shopping.
  • Paying bills.
  • Picking small crumbs up from your floor so as to delay vacuuming.

This is difficult to swallow as you get older and cease to be ushered from event to event and hand-delivered meaningful experiences. Most of the time, we’re doing what has to be done in order to better position ourselves for what we wish to do.

If this sounds like drudgery, that’s because it is. There are some pretty salient myths about the joy of daily life, and I think we are lead to believe that a happy life is one filled each day with intrigue and adventure. We are not the Great Gatsby. Most of my day is a grind – and I actually enjoy my job.

If you can’t be happy with the things in front of you, no great plot line is going to save you from that.

And if you figure out how to do that, tell me how.

Do Therapists Think About Their Clients Between Sessions?

How do therapists prepare to see a client right before a session? Also, do they often think about their clients in between sessions? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Anita Sanz, clinical psychologist, on Quora:

Before a session, I may have to finish notes, take a phone call, or handle an emergency and may not have much time to prepare to see the next client. Because of the realities of working in a busy practice, I have learned to do an abbreviated version of what I do when I have more time. Time to think about who I am and what I am trying to accomplish, what I do and do not have control over, and what I do and do not have as a responsibility.

I remind myself that I am a human being, well-trained and experienced, yet always capable of learning. I need to go into each session with a balanced combination of confidence and humility. I try to go into each session with as little active memory of the previous one, open to what is possible in the new one, and not thinking about anything else that’s going to happen later in the day. Very easy to set as a goal, very hard to do.

I often try to ground myself by looking outside a window at the trees and the sky to get some perspective, take deep breaths, and even “shake off” the last session. You might laugh at me if you saw me in between sessions doing what looks like a bizarre interpretive dance, but there is nothing like moving and shaking things up to begin fresh. I know therapists who climb up and down a flight of stairs or walk around the building between clients when it’s feasible. Sometimes the requirement to remain calm and thoughtful regarding responses during sessions means that in between sessions, it can feel superb to be the opposite. I guess that if you saw ER physicians or EMTs between crises, they’d not always look composed. Antics are useful for stress management. Being silly on a regular basis is good for the professional soul.

I’ll nuke my coffee or tea, or get more water and offer to get the same for my client before we head back to my office. I’ll take a moment to look at the note I made in the last session about my client’s therapy homework assignment or what the focus of this current session was going to be, if that was decided. After finding out how things have been going since the last meeting, we get down to work.

I think about clients in between sessions the same way that thoughts about the office, school, or work probably filter into the minds of others as they are driving or commuting home or they are having downtime. Even with healthy boundaries and not being in the habit of work following me home, my mind will naturally replay a comment or an incident that happened in therapy sometimes. Rather than spend a lot of time outside of sessions trying to figure out what that’s about, I will “note” it and ask myself to give it some serious consideration when I am back in work/therapist mode.

I liken it to walking up to your house and noticing some weeds growing out of the gutters. You aren’t going to drop everything and throw a ladder up and start scooping out the stuff right then and there, but you’ll make a mental note that “I need to get up there when I have time this weekend and get that done.” I know it’s probably important if something about a client is coming to mind, but it’s a “not now” prioritizing that must be done to protect my time away from the office. I can’t keep doing work away from work, or I would burn out.

If something about a session keeps “breaking through” and I can’t push it away until I’m back at work, I will take the time to sort it all out so I can put it away again, so to speak. It takes time and energy to do that, which is why it is “work” and I try not to let “work” impose upon my non-work time. But as other therapists know, we are human, and our clients and their stories and their experiences can have an impact on us. We have to process that impact emotionally, intellectually, professionally, and as fellow human beings, or the work we do will begin to cause us harm.

I may need to let myself feel something like anger, sadness, or confusion either because that’s appropriate for me to be feeling after having listened to or helping with an individual problem and I couldn’t feel it/process it in the session. Or I may find that I am feeling something powerful partly because my client wasn’t feeling what would have been congruent given what they were bringing up and discussing. That will give me relevant information about what I need to focus on next time, if I’m feeling my client’s feelings instead of my client being able to feel his/her emotions, that’s important to know and address.

Sometimes I just find myself thinking about a client whose work or progress in therapy I am jubilant about, and that’s a good thing. Sometimes I reflect on a patient and just hope they are doing okay and just send that thought out to the Universe. Those ways of thinking about clients not only don’t cause any harm, but they are also beneficial. Just like you might think about a goal you achieved at work that makes you feel good or a co-worker who is going through a rough time and hoping they are having a better evening, it doesn’t take anything away from you. It makes you feel happy, connected and reminds you of one of the reasons why you are where you are and why you’re doing what you’re doing.

This work fills an important gap in the literature of the Gold Rush, for while numerous books have been written about those who traveled overland to California, this is the first to give a comprehensive picture of the other half of the migration, of those Argonauts who made the journey in the slow, tiny, and incredibly crowded sailing ships and steamers of a century ago. It presents a colorful, varied, and extremely interesting picture of life on the gold ships during the months-long voyages, of the emigrants’ accommodations, food, and recreations, of their intermediate stops en route, and of what befell those who made the isthmian crossings at Panama or Nicaragua. Based mainly on the diaries and letters of pioneers who made the journey between 1849 and 1852, Sea Routes to the Gold Fields is a fascinating record of one of the most dramatic episodes in the nation’s history.

Mother Livid That Daughter’s Teacher Asked If She’s ‘Illegal’

A Virginia high school English teacher is in hot water after writing a comment on a Latina student’s essay that asked about her immigration status.

Kelly Valera told WUSA-TV that one day after the election, her daughter’s sophomore English teacher at Centreville High School asked students to write their feelings about the results.

Valera’s daughter wrote that she was disgusted that Donald Trump was elected because he “judges people by their race and gender.”

She added: “I am thankful for the life I have and my family (which Trump is trying to deport because we are Hispanic, but whatever).”

When the teacher returned the paper, the girl noticed a comment next to the line about deportation:

“If I may ask, Are you legal or illegal? It depends on that factor for deportation. I hope you get to stay!”

Immigrants living in the United States without documentation are more appropriately referred to as “undocumented.” As journalist Maria Hinojosa explained on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” in October, human beings cannot be “illegal.” Rather, they are “living without papers or without documents in this country.”

At first, Valera’s daughter thought her teacher’s “illegal” question was a joke and posted a picture of the essay to Snapchat. Parents of other students saw it and complained to the school, according to Fusion.net.

Valera, who asked that her daughter not be named in media reports, then requested a meeting with Centreville High administrators. They agreed the teacher’s comment was out of bounds.

Valera’s daughter was transferred to another English class. Her mother said the teacher, whose name wasn’t released by school officials, should be suspended.

“Now [my daughter] is the one feeling like she did something wrong because she was pulled out of her class with all her friends,” Valera told WUSA-TV. “These kids are scared, and she’s scared because of the way the teacher made her feel.”

Fairfax County Public Schools released a statement confirming that the district considers the teacher’s comment “inappropriate.” The district said its policy is “to provide equitable treatment and opportunities for all.”

School officials aren’t legally permitted to request a student’s proof of citizenship and don’t enforce immigration laws.

School administrators declined to discuss possible disciplinary action against the teacher, according to The Associated Press.

Why You Shouldn’t Focus on Finding a Passion in Life

How do you know if you’ve discovered your passion? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Professor of Physics at UC Berkeley, author of Now, The Physics of Time, on Quora.

How do you know if you’ve discovered your passion? You talk as if there is one passion in your life, one that you have to uncover to lead to fulfillment. I think that approach is fundamentally flawed. I believe that the great life is full of many passions.

You use the word “discover.” Right! Keep on learning. Don’t expect to settle down when you find one passion; keep looking for more. Passion after passion after passion.

As you get older, you will become exposed to many new things, things you never realized existed. Even when you are 50 years old, you have touched only a tiny fraction of the world. Don’t focus too early on one.

I’ve said this before, but it is an example worth repeating: My daughter Elizabeth majored in math. When she was filling out the forms for graduation, she discovered that she had inadvertently fulfilled all the requirements for a major in literature; that wasn’t her intention, she had just been exploring. She took a job in Europe working for the OECD, something that was neither math or literature. Later she became involved in a start-up company in the UK, and finally, she returned to the US where we set up the non-profit Berkeley Earth to study environmental problems. Was she following her passion? No. How could such a career have been conceived of by a youngster? She was exploring. She loves her work.

Exploring is an adventure. It is full of uncertainty. It is much more challenging to explore than it is to follow your passion; there is much more uncertainty. If you feel that you must avoid all anxiety, then it is a very uncomfortable way to go. You live with doubt. It is not easy; in fact, it is full of wrong directions, and when you find yourself on a path that is not going where you want, you have to be ready to get off. (As my wife did when she quit IBM to go back to school to study architecture.) But exploration is the only good way to learn enough about the world that you can discover many passions that you never knew you had.

How to Set Limits and Stick to Them

Do you use your research’s results in your day-to-day actions? Did it change something significant in your life? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Dan Ariely, Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, on Quora.

I try to use research routinely in my daily life, there are many examples, but I will give you just one of them. One of the things we know about dieting is that it is very hard because it’s always about one more forkful or one more spoonful. It’s very hard to count calories and know how much we’ve eaten so we often just eat too much. We also know that when we have rules it is easier to know where we are, to remember to count and to hold ourselves accountable. Think about something like Alcoholics Anonymous, they have a very strict rule that says no drinking whatsoever. Why do we have this rule instead of half a glass a day? It’s because we would stretch the rule, find very big glasses or say, two today but nothing next week and we would come up with all kinds of mental gymnastics to do something that is good for us in the short term that’s not good for us in the long term so having strict rules is very important.

Another thing we know is that having someone that we can be accountable to that is not ourselves is important. If you take all of those together what did I do?

About three years ago I signed a contract with my cousin and the contract was very specific, we defined rules for eating and rules for exercise. The rules for eating were that we could not have dessert during the week, only on the weekend. The rules for exercising included that we had to exercise three times during the week either vigorously for thirty minutes or not as vigorously for 1 hour and that we would hold each other accountable and that we would punish each other if we broke the rules. If you look at the photos and TED Talks of me online you can see that there has been some improvement since signing this contract. By the way, I did not manage to succeed all weeks and sometimes she did punish me, through this punishment I learned about the seven minute exercise and another time that I learned that drinking a green vegetable drink every day is not something that makes me very happy. Regardless, having clear rules about eating and exercise and having someone hold me accountable has been very successful.

Even today, being in a different city and with some jet lag, I didn’t really want to work out but knowing that if I didn’t I wouldn’t get myself to my three times a week I had agreed to I got myself out of bed and exercises and now I’m very happy I did.

The U.S. Should Meet Global Standards On Breastfeeding And Paid Leave

The disturbing consequences of inadequate paid leave are all too familiar to families in countries where affordable leave is insufficient, and especially in the United States, which lacks a government policy altogether. A factory worker back at work just three weeks after giving birth had to pump milk in the parking lot on breaks. A hotel worker lost her job because no positions were available to accommodate two to three unpaid 15-minute breaks to pump milk over the course of an eight-hour shift.

We can do better as a nation.

When taking time off after giving birth means risking a paycheck, everything becomes arduous — healing, bonding with the baby, breastfeeding. Clearly breastfeeding should not be a luxury afforded only to those fortunate enough to have jobs with generous paid leave policies or wealthy enough not to miss one parent’s income. Governments need to invest in guaranteed paid family and medical leave and other policies so that families don’t have to win the job lottery to give their children the healthiest start to life.

The benefits of exclusive and continued breastfeeding for at least six months and up to two years have been clearly demonstrated: a lower risk of infant mortality–to the tune of 800,000 lives saved worldwide–and of diabetes, malnutrition, stunting, and other chronic diseases. There are also benefits for the mother, including lower risk of adult diabetes, breast and ovarian cancer, and obesity.

Ensuring paid family leave and other supports to breastfeeding parents is not at odds with the interests of employers; it’s actually good for business. Breastfeeding contributes to a smarter, more productive workforce through better brain development, greater educational achievement, and stronger immune systems. And when women have access to paid leave, private areas to breastfeed or express milk, and other workplace accommodations such as child care, they are more likely to stay with a company, advance in their careers, and have fewer absences, benefitting companies’ bottom lines and their family finances.

It’s been almost 20 years since the International Labour Organization issued a mandate that guarantees women 14 weeks of paid maternity leave and breaks to accommodate breastfeeding on the job, and prohibits job loss or a reduction in pay for reasons relating to maternity. Other countries have risen to this standard or exceeded it, going even further to provide parental leave to both mothers and fathers – whose involvement boosts infant well-being and successful breastfeeding. So why is the United States so quick to deny families these proven benefits? Why do we insist women move mountains to breastfeed their babies, overcoming all the barriers thrown in their way?

It doesn’t have to be like this. While the United States leaves working mothers to fend for themselves, other high income countries like Canada and Sweden and middle-income countries like Vietnam, Kenya and the Philippines have all expanded paid leave and taken steps to help facilitate breastfeeding at work. This in turn leads to lower healthcare costs and parents who actually report higher levels of happiness compared with parents in the United States. The United States is only one of two industrialized nations in the world that doesn’t offer paid leave and ranks last among countries in the industrialized world with supportive policies for women who want to breastfeed.

There has been progress in promoting paid family and medical leave in the United States, through strong public interest, paid leave programs in a handful of states and a federal proposal, the FAMILY Act. Numerous private companies–including Deloitte, Virgin Airlines, Spotify, Netflix, Google, and Facebook, all successful global leaders–have announced generous policies in an effort to attract and retain talented workers, steps that should be motivational to government leaders.

We need governments in every country to demonstrate leadership in this area. We can’t just tout the benefits of breastfeeding – we need to make it possible by investing in concrete policies: lactation counseling in health centers; paid leave; private spaces to breastfeed or express milk in offices, retailers and airports; and flexible schedules at work.

It’s time to meet the standards set by the ILO and the progress of other nations as we improve the United States’ workplace policies and societal norms when it comes to breastfeeding. It’s time to make sure no mother has to pump milk in a factory parking lot three weeks after giving birth. It’s time to do better.

The Uneasy feeling

It seems like something that is difficult to shake. At every life stage we go through, we continuously have an uneasy feeling, and it’s sort of there constantly in the background. Nagging us continuously creating doubt, fear and making us question our abilities. It is an invisible dialogue we have no matter how successful or confident things seem on the outside there is that ever pervading doubt.

I think this may be a survival mechanism, an animal instinct to always be on the lookout. Nobody likes to acknowledge this side of themselves, it puts you in a vulnerable spot. It’s the social media world now, where what is posted is perfection, happy faces, continuous highs and good moments. We are bombarded with images and thoughts which make us feel like that is the true reality, when it is really just a small subset of positive emotions. What is shared is not the whole spectrum of sentiments or authenticity, not only is it a limited view, it is a filtered reality of that small window.

The human experience is very difficult to capture, we try in our own ways. Pictures, videos, writing, art yet nothing can ever describe emotions completely. There is always that part of our experience that only we know that only we live and that only we actually feel. That is our inner truth, our unfiltered reality.

That uneasy feeling is actually our reality that we ignore, that we consistently refuse to engage in discourse with. The participation of understanding yourself, your true inner self is the first step of spirituality. It is the step that seems the most difficult because we are so used to living externally, our image our reputation, our looks, everything creating noise from the true reality of who we really are, and what our real purpose in life is or should be.

Facing anything takes courage, but facing yourself is the most daunting task of all. It is why most refuse to do so and continuously live in a state of superficial reality. We create a numbing environment full of things around us, and put value on temporary objects. Our self-worth becomes less of the inner truth, rather more about what we can project to society.

Our worth is not in our things, it is not in our relationships, it is not in our accomplishments. Our worth is something we have within, that we are born with, it is just given to us for free and that is probably why we take it for granted. It is too simple so we make it complicated that is a gift we have as human beings, to complicate simple things.

The only way to cure the uneasy feeling is to embrace it, own it, and understand it. Applying the coating of acceptance will begin to bring some peace and contentment. In an otherwise noisy world silence is the key, it is the only truth.

Scared to Date Again?

2016-11-22-1479850083-8345387-sBADDATEsmall.jpg

Many relationship-seekers today feel like the walking wounded. Though they’ve had more options than ever to meet potential partners, most of those relationships didn’t work out. Though still willing to try again, these still-undefeated warriors have become understandably wary. Many feel the weight of pre-defeat with its accompanying self-protection, yet have worked hard to keep their cynicism at bay. There can only be so many lost dreams before people lose their positive attitudes, even though they realize that pessimism is neither intriguing nor sexy.

Every relationship seeker I have met has a unique set of reasons for why they are still single. That individual add-up sets the scene for how much dating energy is left to risk. No one can tell another person when to try again, when to retreat, what to change, or how to approach next opportunity. There are just too many variables to create a stereotype.

What if, for instance, you are a reasonably attractive dating package who’s just been ghosted by someone you thought was in it for the long haul? You’d certainly feel a plethora of emotions. If that were you, you could feel a range of emotions from confusion, conflict, devastation, grief, insecurity, hurt, or anger. You might even feel like stalking that abandoning partner to try to find enough information to keep yourself from going crazy in an unbelievable situation. Or, perhaps you’d rush too quickly into another relationship just to find temporary solace. You might even be so off balance that you resort to self-destructive escape behaviors.

Or, what if you truly believed that you were the chosen one, only to find out that a prior flame has re-emerged and that you’re now back in a competitive race that doesn’t look good? You put a lot of energy and thought into selecting that special person and you’re weary of looking and ready to settle down. Now you feel almost powerless to stop what is going on and horrified that you may have to start all over. You are understandably reluctant to take another chance like this, yet have grown use to the joy of a committed relationship. Do you go back to being single and forever forego another commitment, or do you plunge back into that romantic abyss? Maybe you’re so disillusioned that you can’t even think about taking another chance while your heart is still occupied with the one you lost.

Were you one of those relationship partners who weren’t ready to commit just yet, but your partner was? You didn’t want to prematurely promise something you might not be able to deliver, but didn’t want to lose the chance it could eventually work out. As your partner persevered, did you abandon him or her, fearful of premature entrapment and now regret the loss of a relationship that might have eventually mattered?

Many people repeatedly pick the same kind of partners even though none of those relationships have worked out in the past. Or they haven’t really looked at what they are offering, and whether what they want is even available. Perhaps they continue to create fantasy scenarios that aren’t likely to succeed. Then, daunted by too many disappointing losses, they might settle too quickly for someone who can’t meet their standards over time. Loneliness can mask logical and effective reasoning for anyone.
Balancing all the data is not easy. Ask yourself these important questions: what are your currently available potential options? Have you recovered from past losses? Are you willing to realistically look at your marketability? Are you truly open to the actual possibilities you do have? And, are you feeling good enough about yourself to go back on the “auction block?” You need to be at your best and not repeat past errors before you open again to a committed search, and resilient if the next relationship doesn’t compensate for what you’ve lost.

No one is ready to successfully date again unless they have sufficiently healed from their prior heartbreak. Lost relationships must be grieved appropriately but should never doom the hope of a new love. Those who are still in the throes of sorrow need to wait until they can be honestly optimistic again so they can approach the next relationship ready to give it their best.

If you still feel pessimistic, cynical, insecure, defeated, anxious, angry, martyred, or exploited, you’ll be more likely to approach the next relationship warily at best. Even more worrisome, is that you will want that next relationship to make up for all the pain you’ve experienced from the last abandonment. Hyper-vigilant, you might find yourself ready to catch any hint that abandonment may be on the horizon, seeking constant reassurance from a new partner who isn’t responsible for what happened in your past.
The following test will help you know if you are ready to take on a new relationship. Answer the questions as honestly as you can. If your score tells you that you’re not ready, you can take the test again after you give yourself more time to heal.

Now add up your total scores.

1 – 15 You definitely are not ready to date yet
16 – 30 You should probably wait awhile and hang out with good people who love you
31 – 45 You’re beginning to heal
46 – 60 Things are looking up
61 – 75 Time to get out there and try again

Don’t be discouraged if your scores tell you that you’re not ready to go back out there yet. Dating is hard for everyone, especially today where there are so many unknowns. Even when things go well most of the time, it is not easy to get back out there after you’ve been disillusioned by an unexpected or premature ending. Confidence comes from success, but it can also come from building resilience through continuous honing of your approach.

The more you value yourself, understand what you want and can give, and see relationships as the potentially hazardous but mystical adventures they can be, the more you will be able to effectively discern the good from the bad. Though it is difficult to keep your self-esteem level up in the face of consecutive disappointments, you can eventually find the great partner you want if your search stays light-hearted and smart. Looking for the right partner is no different from looking for anything else in life that you want to last. Stay in a sacred place, maintain your aliveness, and stay open to transformation.
Most people are universally attracted to people who are in love with life and who bounce back from loss with renewed commitment and excitement. Though it is more difficult for anyone if losses mount, you can still give it your all each time you try again. That kind of courage and optimism will always be contagious and highly valued on the dating market.

My Holiday Wish Is For Hillary To Put Country First

Recent reports of a pending vote recount in several states leave me with great concern about a holiday season and ensuing presidential term marred by needless controversy and a badly compromised position in the world. Nothing positive can come from this recount effort and it would behoove Secretary Clinton and her apparent surrogate, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, to drop it immediately, before it does irreparable damage to the country.

In that Ms. Stein cannot win the election (and accordingly lacks what lawyers would call ‘standing’ to pursue the issue – i.e. a real stake in the outcome), it appears that this is either a fundraising ploy for the Green Party or its use by Secretary Clinton to voice her displeasure at the outcome and seek the presidency through the back door. To do so and reach 270 electoral votes, Secretary Clinton would have to overturn the result in all three states at issue – WI, PA and MI with 46 electoral votes – despite Mr. Trump’s margin being as high as 60,000 votes in PA, and holding 306 electoral votes.

Note that no one, including Secretary Clinton, has identified any actual instances of errors in vote counting. All that we have heard is that so-called experts have expressed concerns that results may not be consistent with a proper count. This is not much of a basis to subject the country and the world to the uncertainty and instability associated with a recount at this time.

“There is no smoking gun,” said George Martin, a former co-chair of the Wisconsin Green Party who’s involved in Stein’s recount effort…. “There’s not something we’re pointing to say that this is wrong in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania”. … The campaign stresses that the recounts are not to change the outcome of the results but are rather a check and balance on the process of counting votes.

At best, this effort will be a waste of the time of election officials and not interfere with transition planning efforts which are needed to ensure that the new administration is properly equipped to govern. At worst, it will cause confusion on the part of all concerned within and without the US as to who the next president will be, lead to the election unnecessarily being decided in the courts, and therefore destroy the credibility of both major candidates. It may impede a smooth transition and make the incoming administration – and the country – vulnerable to foreign threats for which it needs to prepare.

Even if the Secretary were somehow able to become president through court fiat, it is highly unlikely that she could govern effectively. The anger of those who voted for Mr. Trump, coupled with reinforcement of her ongoing reputation for sleazy practices which was extensively addressed during the campaign, would destroy her legitimacy and ability to have Americans follow her lead, and result in investigations, acrimony and chaos beyond what we have recently seen, and antithetical to any efforts to improve the lot of Americans. The same result may obtain if the recount effort gains traction and derails the transition efforts, but ultimately fails. It would be a pyrrhic victory indeed to cast doubt on the legitimacy of a Trump Administration.

The ‘principled’ arguments which I have heard in support of a recount do not hold much water. Many have pointed to the Secretary’s victory in the popular vote. Excellent argument for a constitutional amendment to do away with the Electoral College, but one which should be pursued once this election is resolved. This election was conducted for better or worse, under the constitution as it stands and its results should not be disturbed.

It has also been suggested by Ms. Stein’s camp (above) and others that the recount process should be used to test the accuracy of our election process. Fair enough, but not a cost of undermining the incoming Administration. This can be accomplished at any time prior to the next election. If the country is going to be put through the trauma associated with a recount at this time, there needs to be a smoking gun. This is NOT the time to address general concerns about the election process

Hopefully, the populace will make clear to the Secretary that even if she ‘wins’ a recount, she will lose in many ways, and cause the country great pain in the process. The best gift for our country this holiday season is an end to the most painful election in recent memory.

Is Your Past Controlling Your Life?

Most of us have one of two ways of dealing with the past. Some of us try to bury it away. Our attitude is whatever happened happened; we can’t change it, so we should just let it go. Others of us seem to get stuck in our history. We’re deeply triggered by memories or become overwhelmed by old feelings. We struggle to let the past go. Research now shows us that neither of these attitudes is particularly adaptive or beneficial to our personal development. Although, these approaches to the past may seem entirely contradictory, they actually lead to the same ultimate outcome. If we avoid facing the past, we fail to recognize the many, often limiting, ways it’s influencing our present. On the other hand, if we over-identify with and ruminate on our childhood experiences, we still find ourselves being ruled by these events. In both cases, we are failing to differentiate and live our lives on our own terms.

Attachment research shows that in order to free ourselves from the past, form healthier relationships, and show up today as the people we want to be, we have to make sense and feel the full pain of our story. When we fail to face unresolved pain from our childhood, we have many, often unconscious, ways of repeating it. These repetitive patterns are not intentional or thought out.

The big and small traumas from our early lives may not consciously feel like they’re dictating our actions. Instead, they come out in ways we don’t realize -for example, in partners we choose, critical attitudes we have toward ourselves, and dynamics we create with our children. Events from our present day lives trigger implicit memories that are often painful and cause us to react rather than act in our own best interest. In this sense, we’re often reliving rather than living our lives, filling past prescriptions rather than forging our own path. So, what are the ways we relive rather than live our lives?

Repeat – One of the ways that we carry on our past in the present is by repeating behaviors and taking on characteristics of important figures in our early lives. Of course, this can be a good thing when we’re adopting ways of being that we value and respect. However, as human beings, we have a tendency to over-identify with the negative traits of our parents or early caretakers. We actually struggle to surpass or see ourselves in a different light from the people who originally cared for us. On an unconscious level, we take on our parents’ traits in an effort to preserve an idealized image of them.

While it may seem counterintuitive, it can actually feel painful or threatening to separate ourselves from our parents by seeing them realistically, including all the ways they were limited and hurt us. Instead, we identify with our parents and take on their qualities. For example, if we had an especially elusive or inward parent, we may find ourselves feeling unavailable to our loved ones or pulling away from relationships when they get too close. If we had a parent who worried excessively and intruded on us, we may find ourselves feeling the same way toward our children and acting in ways that are invasive or overbearing.

React – The opposite side of the same coin comes when we rebel against our parents’ way of being. Once again, it’s healthy and wise to identify traits we don’t like in our early caretakers and to choose to be different in these ways. However, we sometimes are so determined to be different from our family of origin that we overcompensate or distort our natural way of being. For example, if we hated the way our parents did not get along, we may grow up writing off relationships or love in general. We may vow to never get “too serious” with someone or trust anyone on a deep level.

Or, if we felt deprived as kids, we may try to make up for it by overindulging or spoiling our own children. We may project onto our kids that they feel like we did when we were young, and therefore, react to them in ways that are misattuned to their actual wants and needs. In each of these cases, we are still seeing the present through a filter of our past and failing to separate ourselves from our history. We’re not allowing ourselves to fully realize who we really are and what we really want.

Recreate – Another way we fail to step out from the shadows of our past is by recreating environments and dynamics that are similar to those we experienced growing up. This pattern can be tricky to identify. However, we may find ourselves somehow dating or marrying people who treat us in ways that are similar to how we were we were treated as kids. For example, if we grew up with a parent who made us feel small or insignificant, we may find ourselves attracted to partners who are more dismissive. If we had a parent who fawned over us, we may only feel drawn to people who build us up or offer us all of their attention.

Another way we recreate past dynamics is by distorting figures in our lives and projecting traits or reactions onto them that come from our history. For instance, if we had an untrustworthy, flaky, or rejecting person in our early lives, we may consistently feel we’re being deceived as adults. We may assume our partner is pulling away or cheating on us, even when there are no real signs that this is the case.

Lastly, we may even unconsciously provoke people in our lives to react to us in ways that are familiar, even though they were painful. If we were seen as babyish or incompetent as kids, for instance, we may find ourselves acting more helpless or needy with our partner. If we had a parent who lost his or her temper, we may try to provoke that same reaction out of the people we’re closest to in our adult lives by insulting them or trying to push their buttons.

All of these patterns of behavior may lead to unpleasant, even devastating outcomes, but they also help us maintain habitual, old, often negative, ways of feeling about ourselves. Even if we’re hundreds of miles and many years away from our childhood environment, these patterns allow us to remain in these familiar environments on a psychological and emotional level. This lack of differentiation can cause us to feel bonded to our early caretakers in ways that limit us. This illusion of connection may have felt like a lifesaving adaptation when we were little and needed these people for our very survival, but as adults, these patterns are no longer adaptive and hurt us in our ability to become who we ourselves want to be.

To the extent that we don’t recognize and separate from these destructive adaptations, we fail to live our own lives. The good news is that by creating a coherent narrative of what happened to us, we can actually separate from unfavorable overlays of our past and become the people we want to be, a subject I dive into in the Webinar “Free Yourself from the Pain of Your Past.” When we start this journey to better know our own story, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and liberate ourselves to make real change and create a better future.

Learn more about this subject in Dr. Lisa Firestone’s Webinar “Free Yourself from the Pain of Your Past” or in her online course with Dr. Daniel Siegel “Making Sense of Your Life.”

Medicare Isn’t The Only Senior Program Trump Is Likely To Mess With

Some advocates for the elderly have this to say about the fate of senior programs under a Trump presidency: Be afraid, be very afraid.

While most attention has been focused on what’s in store for Medicare ― the popular senior health insurance that the GOP has been eager to dismantle ― that’s not the only senior program that could get rocked to its core.

There are many programs and services funded through the Older Americans Act (OAA) that are expected to be targeted ― programs that support seniors and help them continue to live independently. Probably the best-known OAA program is Meals on Wheels, which delivers hot meals to shut-ins and is sometimes the only contact an elderly person who lives alone has with another human. There is also subsidized housing for seniors that could see revision. Caregivers may lose support, as little as there was of it. And long-term planning for the nation to meet the needs of its burgeoning older population may get cast aside ― things like developing public transportation alternatives to driving, home modification programs to allow people to age in place, research into Alzheimer’s, etc.

First to go: Traditional Medicare will be shredded when the Affordable Care Act is repealed.

As the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare noted, “destroying traditional Medicare in favor of a privatized CouponCare system is at the top of the Republican agenda.” Paul Ryan has long had the program in his sights and while President-Elect Donald Trump has sent mixed messages about what he specifically plans to do, his standard blanket answer of “it will be better” hasn’t assuaged many fears.

Nor should seniors expect much in the way of intervention or help from Vice President-Elect Mike Pence. During his decade in Congress, Pence consistently voted to cut benefits to Social Security and Medicare. In fact, according to the NCPSSA, “Few members of Congress have an anti-seniors voting record as consistently strong as Mike Pence.” The group scored Pence at 0 percent on issues important to seniors during the 2011-2012 Congress because he voted for multiple pieces of legislation that would cut benefits and programs that protect seniors’ health and financial security.

While it is impossible to know now which program budgets will be cut – or by how much – services funded through the OAA such as Meals on Wheels, adult day care, and caregiver support are all expected to be targeted, according to Howard Gleckman, author of the book “Caring for Our Parents” who speaks on aging issues. The OAA has been under heavy-duty budget pressure for a decade. Even under the Obama administration, funding for most of its programs remained flat while the number of seniors using them grew. In some communities, there are waiting lists for programs such as Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels, which not only addresses the problem that one in six seniors faces hunger issues, also provides a check-in service for seniors who live alone. And in terms of economics and value: The program can feed a senior for a year on what it costs to spend one day in the hospital. Expect funding to be squeezed tighter.

Howard Bedlin, National Council on Aging Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy, minced no words about cuts to the OAA. In an email to The Huffington Post, he wrote: “Right now there are more people aged 65 and older then there have ever been before, and 10,000 baby boomers join that group every day. The Older Americans Act has already been subjected to cuts over the last seven years – in a time when it should have seen investments to meet the needs of the aging American population. Slashing the budget for these programs now would have immediate and real effects on older adults and their families ― such as fewer older adults receiving meals, a harder time for them getting transportation to doctor’s appointments, less assistance with finding work for seniors having trouble making ends meet, and family caregivers losing their outlet for respite care and training.”

And while hands-on services are where the most immediate pain will be felt, it behooves us to look long-term as well: What will happen to research money now being spent on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s or other diseases that afflict the elderly? What will become of tele-medicine? Easier access to preventative medicine, like flu shots, blood pressure readings, glucose testing?

In the words of former Vice President Hubert Humphrey, “the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”

The twilight years in America just got a bit darker.

Francois Fillon Wins French Conservative Ticket For Presidential Race: Partial Results

PARIS, Nov. 27 (Reuters) – Francois Fillon, a socially conservative free-marketeer, is to be the presidential candidate of the French center-right and likely main challenger to far-right leader Marine Le Pen in next year’s election, first partial results of a primaries’ second-round vote showed on Sunday.

With votes from over a third of 10,228 polling stations counted, Fillon, who went into Sunday’s second-round run-off as favorite, had won 68.6 percent of the vote in the head-to-head run-off compared with 31.4 percent for his rival, another ex-prime minister, Alain Juppe.

All eyes now turn to the ruling Socialist party and to whether the deeply unpopular President Francois Hollande will decide to run for the left-wing ticket in his party’s primaries in January, amid signs that his prime minister, Manuel Valls, is considering a bid of his own.

Opinion polls suggest that no left-wing candidate would make the run-off second round of the presidential election itself next May, leaving Fillon a clear run at the anti-EU, anti-immigration Le Pen that the surveys expect him to win.

Polls have nevertheless recently proven out of step with the voting patterns that saw Britain vote to leave the EU and Americans elect Donald Trump as president.

Next year’s French presidentials are shaping up to be another test of anti-establishment anger in Western countries.

Fillon, 62, came from behind in opinion polls over the past two weeks.

In last week’s first round Les Republicains party primary he knocked out former president Nicolas Sarkozy, under whom he served as prime minister from 2007 to 2012, and pushed Juppe into second place.

A racing car enthusiast who lives in a Loire valley chateau, Fillon promises radical reforms to France’s regulation-encumbered economy, vowing to roll back the state and slash government’s bloated costs.

The Socialist primaries are due to take place in January. Hollande has two weeks in which to decide whether to take part in these primaries and run for re-election.

The conservative primaries’ win for Fillon and his hardline economic platform give the 62-year-old Hollande a target to attack and could convince him to make a bid for a second five-year mandate against the odds.

Screaming From The Golden Cage: Heal Anxiety, Depression And Addiction By Embracing The Truth

Dr. Bruce Alexander, professor emeritus of psychology, performed an experiment in the 1970s. His team built two cages for laboratory rats. In one cage a rat was alone and isolated. It couldn’t see or touch other rats and had nothing to do. In the other cage called Rat Park, they had good food and lots of cheese, running wheels for exercise, colored balls, platforms for climbing, tin cans for hiding and many other rats to play and have sex with.

Rat Park soon filled with babies. In both cases, rats had access to two drinking bottles: a bottle of water and a bottle of water with morphine. Morphine is pure heroin. Unlike street heroin that contains brick dust, bleach powder, cement and other contaminants, morphine is much stronger. At the end of each day, researchers measured the two bottles to see if rats preferred the pure water or the heroin water.

The rats in solitary confinement almost always chose the heroin water. They always became addicted and killed themselves. In Rat Park, they almost never drank heroin water. None become addicted or overdosed. Rats are social, sexual and working beings just like humans.

It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble.
Is what you know for sure that just ain’t so.
– Mark Twain

People who become addicted don’t have to be put in cages. It’s enough for them only to feel caged-in a job, in a relationship, in a family or in a country. They will drink or take drugs to cope with the situation. Prof. Alexander concluded that addiction is an escape from an environment where human connection is impossible. Alcohol or drug dependence is the consequence of not bearing being present in your own life.

While prof. Alexander was studying the effects of the social environment on rats, the Vietnam war was unfolding on the other side of the world. According to a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, 20 percent of the American soldiers fighting in Vietnam were addicted to heroin. The public in the United States was terrified that hundreds of thousands of veterans will become junkies but this never happened.

When they returned home, 95 percent of the addicted soldiers stopped using heroin within one year. Another study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry revealed that addicts who didn’t receive any treatment were as likely to stop using drugs as those who went rehab. They changed the environment, they changed their behaviors.

Johann Hari, in his book Chasing the Scream, wrote that rats in solitary confinement and soldiers in Vietnam didn’t become victims of the drug but of their environment. Addiction was their way of coping with “being dislocated from everything that gave them meaning,” wrote Hari. When you feel caged, and your world becomes intolerable, you leave physically if you can or mentally if you cannot. When soldiers returned home to a meaningful life, they gave up the drugs.

People who live in a social environment where they can connect with others and bond with their work will not become addicted even if they have alcohol and drugs around them because they want to be present in their lives. But if you feel trapped or caged in a situation, a job or a relationship, if you cannot bond because of you in life in a social context that punishes you for expressing who you are and for living your truth, you will find refuge in whatever takes your pain away. Prof. Peter Cohen, director of the Center for Drug Research at the University of Amsterdam, suggested that we need to replace the word addiction with the word bonding. We have a fundamental human need to bond with our work and with others, but we can only bond if we live our truth and open our hearts.

Do You Feel Caged?

You don’t need to live in a cage, or to go to war to feel caged, and not be able to find meaning in life. Your own mind, your unconscious beliefs, a toxic friendship, a job environment or family relationship can choke your will to express who you are with the same tragic effects. The heart’s calling – your will – is only love and cannot be anything else. Your will flows through your heart and pulls you towards what you most value in life.

When you embrace it, you find meaning. When you block it, you find pain. Love is the force that pulls us to follow our dreams and step into the unknown, to reveal and express who we are, to explore, to discover, to create and to bond. Whenever your behaviors conflict your will, whenever you think and act against love, tension grows within yourself. Strain turns into pain. Anger, anxiety, and depression follow.

The Importance of Living Your Truth

I have a friend who is project manager for a financial corporation, but her dream is to open a restaurant. Her will is to start this new business. Every time she thinks about her calling her heart fills with joy. She feels love. But immediately her mind drags her in the opposite direction: ‘What if it doesn’t work?’ ‘I am in my thirties, and I have a child. ‘What will my parents say about me quitting my job after they supported me through college?’

She then acts as she thinks she should and stays in her job without actually willing to do so. Everyone envies her. She earns a great paycheck, has a loving husband and a beautiful child, and she’s sinking into depression. She feels even worse when she looks around her because apparently, she has no reason to feel depressed. The truth is she has the only reason to feel depressed: her heart is screaming from a golden cage, and she doesn’t listen.

Finding Peace of Mind and Joy with Truth

The greater is the gap between what love calls you to do and what you actually do, the deeper the depression you can fall into. The way to find joy is to leave the cage, not to make it prettier. Why do you think the waiting rooms of psychologists and psychiatrists are filled with successful people who realized after twenty or thirty years of work that money, a career and a house in the suburbs do not bring peace of mind and joy of heart?

They keep hoping that by changing the external conditions of their lives – earn more money, be in a better physical shape, have another partner or travel more – will change how they feel. It never works because the emptiness is not around them. The emptiness is within them. And the only way to come back to life is to acknowledge that little voice rising from your heart and begging you to return to love, to return to truth.

Body Image vs. Self Image: A Self Discovery?

Body Image vs. Self Image; A Self Discovery?
Robert Reames, CSCS, CN, CES/FNS/CPT www.facebook.com/robertreameslive

If you’ve ever looked at celebrities in the media and thought to yourself; “does she really look like that? Is he that perfect?” The answer to these and other questions like this; highly doubtful. I think it started back as early as the 40’s and 50’s the onset of the “glamour” days in Hollywood. The “looks” of the media stars seem to set the tone and the quest for the flawless. Sometimes even when a healthy weight is achieved there are still parts of our bodies that in our thoughts don’t quite meet a level of beauty that the media and the fitness industry somehow has convinced us that we need to reach. As technology continues to develop so has the ability to enhance looks of perfection. In reality these folks you see in the media are just like you and me. Airbrushing, great lighting, make-up, photo shopping, injections, plastic surgery, extreme dieting prior to a movie, TV or photo shoot and other techniques are all used to create these illusions. Extreme measures many times are taken to create “the look.” This is the “glamour machine” in action. Then most likely, after the production or photo shoot because they’re human just like you and me it’s beer and pizza and or whatever the individual preference of indulgence may be.

That said, let’s talk about your body image and how this image has a huge impact on your self image. I mention the above because this concept tends to drive our thoughts, inner dialogue and self perception. These images often create unachievable expectations and sometimes can cause one to say; “why even bother?” The tendency is not to acknowledge your own individual progress or personal best because it’s not perfection. It’s important to shift the focus towards your individual goals and needs and what you can accomplish. And shift away from what is presented by the Hollywood glamour machine, the cover of the fitness magazine at the newstand or that skinny person down the street who can eat everything in site and not gain a pound. Own the fact that you are a unique being. Achieve your own personal best and not someone else’s. Your goals are real and valid. Own your own unique gifts and lead with these gifts; these talents. Be that electric person in the room who just knows who you are, is grounded and passionate about what you bring to this life. Think about it; there’s nothing more attractive than that. You’re not a failure or a bad person (self image) because you’ve gained a few pounds. (body image) The fitness industry contributes to this as well. This focus on external body perfection has always been a peeve I have with the business and I continue to work hard to shift this focus. The emphasis tends to be on the external while ignoring internal benefits and a return to health. Not that we all don’t want to look our best…that’s a huge benefit of taking great care of ourselves. However, getting optimum numbers on our yearly physicals, quality longevity, exuding a healthy glow, having mobility to play with our kids and grandkids, climb stairs, being able to mow the lawn, shovel the snow or haul the groceries in at night needs more attention. Obesity with adults and kids and healthcare costs in America are all dramatically rising every year. So the approach of the sheened up body under perfect lighting after fasting for two days is clearly not working. It never worked for any long term. www.twitter.com/Robertreames

So what is body image? It’s a reaction you have within in response to what you see in the mirror or a picture. This encompasses the perceptions and things you tell yourself about how you feel about your body. You’re too fat, too thin, ugly, old, bloated and tired, average, amazing, fit, beautiful or whatever you tell yourself based on what you see. This is your body image. Self image is how we feel about ourselves as people, as human beings. It’s who you are as a person from the soul; self esteem. If you’re a good giving and caring person, a good parent, a great friend or sibling. Body image and self image for most everyone go hand in hand. You may have great body image but a poor self image; poor self esteem. Or you may have the opposite. Ultimately you want a healthy and positive image of both. If you’ve looked in the mirror and punished yourself for what you see based on the fact that you’ve let your health go and gained weight you get what I’m talking about here. Because you’ve let yourself go (body image) …now you’ve deemed yourself as a total failure in life. (self image) The fat on your hips and thighs, your flabby midsection, the chubby arms…these are not who you are. (body image) And because you may have let yourself go for whatever reason, you’re still the same loving giving person that you’ve always been. (self image) Your friends, family and loved ones around you know and embrace this as well. I’ve said before that being overweight for the most part is always the result of something much bigger; an injury that caused you to become inactive, a traumatic event, your need to be protected by the fat suit, depression, loss, a bad relationship or any other reason in life that took you in the wrong direction health wise. These events and the current result of being overweight again are not who you are. No need to punish yourself. And newsflash; If you’re overweight you have the power within you to do something about it.

Your body image now may not be so much that you hate yourself and where you are now. But more a feeling of disappointment that you’ve not kept the standards that you really do have for yourself. You’ve let yourself go. Truth is if these standards didn’t exist in you, your poor body image due to being fat and out of shape wouldn’t bother you at all. You’d be fat, bloated, happy and loving life. Tap your resources and put this in motion. Raise your standards, alter your perspective and move forward one step at a time but continue the move forward. Focus on your goals, your passions, your inner goodness and not the illusion of the media machine.

Avoid a “diet” as these are temporary plans that yield temporary results. If you’re not going to commit to a level that you can commit to or do it right you’re better off to stay overweight until you decide that you’re ready to do it. Then make the changes necessary to embrace a lifestyle that will get you to your goal weight and keep you there. Ultimately you to learn what I call the “skill of weight control.” Determine a weight that you realistically can attain and sustain and work with that. And this perspective will continue to have ebbs and flows. That’s okay. Just stay conscious and real about what you are willing to do.

It’s keeping standards high for the choices you make on a daily basis. Heck yes you’ll look good…absolutely! Enjoy and flaunt this great pay-off. But go even deeper on this for yourself, your health and how you’ll feel. Your energy levels will soar and there is so much out there in life that awaits you. At your physical the doctor hands you tremendous results. If you have kids, nieces or nephews you’re going to turn around one day and they’ll have kids. You want to begin now to enjoy these times later. And yes; you’ll be able to wear those benchmark jeans! Don’t wait for tragedy to wake you up forcing you to play catch up. Get off the couch and take action now. You don’t have to be perfect just be you. “Acknowledge all progress” as I say. You’ll feel better and who doesn’t want that? Love your body and who you are. Get in the game and enjoy the journey!

Cathal the King’s Magic Food

Cathal the King’s Magic Food

Cathal was king of Munster, and Fergal was king of Ulster, with an intense rivalry between them as both wanted to be high king. Fergal’s sister, Leah, fell in love with Cathal and sent him delicacies. Fergal summoned his wizard and ordered him to perform his mystical practices so that whoever eats them will never again have a day’s health for the rest of his life. When the apples entered Cathal’s stomach, they turned into worms, but one large worm consumed all the others. From then on, Cathal was constantly ravenously hungry, and he ate the food belonging to everyone in his palace and in the areas he travelled through. Ronan, a medical student, eventually realized the monster could be evicted by the same way he had entered it, by fasting and appealing to the power of the church. Ronan convinced the king to fast and give him apples based on religious numbers. One was for God, 3 was for the Trinity, 4 for the books of the gospels, 5 for the books of Moses, 8 for the beatitudes, 12 for the twelve apostles, 13 for Christ with the apostles. Ronan eventually got Cathal to fast to save Ronan’s soul from damnation. The demon was eventually evicted by holding food up to Cathal’s mouth but refusing to let him eat it. The palace was set on fire, and the demon was destroyed within it. The demon appeared like a lizard swaying in Cathal’s mouth before eviction.

CNN Mistakenly Circulates Prewritten Fidel Castro Text. Again.

CNN blew it for the TKTKTK time this week. [[NOTE: Insert number of blunders on Monday.]]

OK, so the network probably didn’t actually air 30 minutes of pornography on Thanksgiving night, but it did accidentally publish a few editor’s notes alongside its obituary of Cuba’s former leader Fidel Castro on Saturday.

The text ― which could still be read on some sites that published the story off the wire and didn’t correct the error ― instructs the story’s writer to make changes if former President George H.W. Bush dies:

One Castro or another has ruled Cuba over a period that spans seven decades and 11 U.S. presidents. Fidel Castro outlived six of those presidents, [[[NOTE: change to seven if George H.W. Bush dies before Castro]]] including Cold War warriors John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

To its credit, the note isn’t wrong. But Bush Sr. is still very much alive.

CNN’s gaffe wouldn’t even be noteworthy, had it not made a similar mistake with a prewritten Castro obit more than a decade ago. In 2003, the site mistakenly gave readers access to a small database of obituary drafts and graphics, The Smoking Gun reported at the time.

The graphic for the late Cuban strongman included placeholder text that called Castro a “lifeguard, athlete, movie star, governor, president” alongside a quote, “Life is just one grand sweet song, so start the music.” All that text had appeared in the obituary of former President Ronald Reagan.

News outlets often write obituaries in advance for world leaders, celebrities and other noteworthy people, including The Huffington Post. Giving one publication guff for going live with a mistake might be a little unfair, as premature publication has a long, storied history in journalism

It’s a funny, sobering, accidental tradition that has allowed famous folk from Sharon Osbourne to “Astronaut Neil Young” to read about their own demise.

WATCH: Doubting You Deserve Better

It’s very difficult for us to manifest into our lives more than we believe we deserve. What do you unconsciously believe you deserve? Look around at what you’ve got at present. If you’d like things to get better, allow yourself to know the truth – you deserve better. I hope this will help.

6 Toxic Thoughts Smart People Quarantine

2016-11-25-1480102808-5481960-6ToxicThoughtsSuccessfulPeopleQuarantineHP

Your self-talk (the thoughts you have about your feelings) can make or break you. When you make a mistake, they either magnify the negativity or help you turn that misstep into something productive.

Negative self-talk is unrealistic, unnecessary, and self-defeating. It sends you into a downward emotional spiral that is difficult to pull out of.

All self-talk is driven by important beliefs that you hold about yourself. It plays an understated but powerful role in success because it can both spur you forward to achieve your goals and hold you back.

“He who believes he can and he who believes he cannot are both correct.” -Henry Ford

TalentSmart has tested the emotional intelligence (EQ) of more than a million people and found that 90% of top performers are high in emotional intelligence. These successful, high EQ individuals possess an important skill⎯the ability to recognize and control negative self-talk so that it doesn’t prevent them from reaching their full potential.

These successful people earn an average of $ 28,000 more annually than their low EQ peers, get promoted more often, and receive higher marks on performance evaluations. The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $ 1,300 to an annual salary.

When it comes to self-talk, we’ve discovered some common thoughts that hold people back more than any others. Be mindful of your tendencies to succumb to these thoughts, so that they don’t derail your career:

1. Perfection equals success. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, you’re always left with a nagging sense of failure, and end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish, instead of enjoying what you were able to achieve.

2. My destiny is predetermined. Far too many people succumb to the highly irrational idea that they are destined to succeed or fail. Make no mistake about it, your destiny is in your own hands, and blaming multiple successes or failures on forces beyond your control is nothing more than a cop out. Sometimes life will deal you difficult cards to play, and others times you’ll be holding aces. Your willingness to give your all in playing any hand you’re holding determines your ultimate success or failure in life.

3. I “always” or “never” do that. There isn’t anything in life that you always or never do. You may do something a lot or not do something enough, but framing your behavior in terms of “always” or “never” is a form of self-pity. It makes you believe that you have no control of yourself and will never change. Don’t succumb to it.

4. I succeed when others approve of me. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain⎯you’re never as good or bad as they say you are. It’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, but you can take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what people think about you, your self-worth comes only from within.

5. My past equals my future. Repeated failures can erode your self-confidence and make it hard to believe you’ll achieve a better outcome in the future. Most of the time, these failures result from taking risks and trying to achieve something that isn’t easy. Just remember that success lies in your ability to rise in the face of failure. Anything worth achieving is going to require you to take some risks, and you can’t allow failure to stop you from believing in your ability to succeed.

6. My emotions equal my reality. If you’ve read Emotional Intelligence 2.0, you know how to take an objective look at your feelings and separate fact from fiction. If not, you might want to read it. Otherwise, your emotions will continue to skew your sense of reality, making you vulnerable to the negative self-talk that can hold you back from achieving your full potential.

Bringing It All Together

I hope these lessons are as useful to you as they have been to me over the years. As I write them, I’m reminded of their power and my desire to use them every day.

What other toxic thoughts do successful people quarantine? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Local Foods Meet Global Foodways

Local Foods Meet Global Foodways

This book explores the intersection of food and foodways from global and local perspectives. The collection contributes to interdisciplinary debates about the role and movement of commodities in the historical and contemporary world. The expert contributions collectively address a fundamental tension in the emerging scholarly terrain of food studies, namely theorizing the relationship between foodstuff production and cuisine patterns. They explore a wide variety of topics, including curry, bread, sugar, coffee, milk, pulque, Virginia ham, fast-food, obesity, and US ethnic restaurants. Local Foods Meet Global Foodways considers movements in context, and, in doing so, complicates the notions that food ‘shapes’ culture as it crosses borders or that culture ‘adapts’ foods to its neo-local or global contexts. By analysing the dynamics of contact between mobile foods and/or people and the specific cultures of consumption they provoke, these case studies reveal the process whereby local foods become global or global foods become local, to be a dynamic, co-creative development jointly facilitated by humans and nature. This volume explores a vast expanse of global regions, such as North and Central America, Europe, China, East Asia and the Pacific, India, sub-Saharan Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, and the USSR/Russia. It includes a foreword by the eminent food scholar Carole Counihan, and an afterword by noted theorist of cuisine Rachel Laudan, and will be of great interest to students and researchers of history, anthropology, geography, cultural studies and American studies. This book is based on a special issue of Food and Foodways.

Transition, Tweets And Trump

The gods have their own rules.
Ovid
, Metamorphosis

It’s been a couple of really exciting weeks for President-elect Trump and a very busy time at that. Some visitors have come by just to establish rapport with the new president, others simply to offer congratulations, and others looking for work.

It started when Prime Minister Shinzo-Abe of Japan stopped by to say “hi” barely a week after the election. That visit was especially welcomed by Mr. Trump since his daughter, Ivanka, an executive in the Trump hotel chain, happened to be present when the prime minister arrived. Sitting in on the meeting she could watch how her father comported himself in the company of this very important person, and served to give her a first-hand look at how he would be acting as president. Some people thought it a bit odd that his daughter, who has no security clearance, should be privy to a conversation between two world leaders. In fairness to Ivanka, however, that should not have been of concern. She did not get to be as important a part of the Trump family as she is, without learning to be discreet. The Prime Minister of Japan was, of course, not the only exciting visitor the president-elect hosted.

Three very important business men and Trump colleagues from India made a special trip at their own expense, simply because they wanted to personally congratulate Mr. Trump on his election. Although three of his children were present at the meeting, a security clearance was not needed for a meeting of this kind since the businessmen are the family’s business partners rather than political types. A spokesman for the family did not say whether the family’s business investments in India were discussed. A picture was posted, however, showing the businessmen and Mr. Trump standing side by side giving a thumbs up gesture that suggests the men had agreed on something that pleased all of them.

Mr. Trump’s pleasure at all the visitors he received was probably matched by his delight that the number of lawsuits confronting him because of his business practices was reduced by one. Although he has always maintained that he doesn’t settle lawsuits, he very sensibly permitted his lawyers to settle the one involving former Trump University students who said he had defrauded them. He agreed to pay $ 25 million to the plaintiffs since he realized that having to testify in court would take away from the valuable time he needs to get ready to assume office.

Of course it has not all been as easy as greeting sycophants, supplicants and business colleagues. Some real problems have introduced themselves to Mr. Trump. The most troubling may well be the suggestion that Mr. Trump’s business interests conflict with his duties as president. He at first said that by turning over all his business interests to his children he would avoid all conflicts of interest. That was contrary to the advice he has received from assorted places, including the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal. In an editorial published November 18, 2016 the WSJ told him his best way forward was “to liquidate his stake in the company.” Later in the same editorial the editors said: “There is no question that a Trump business sale would be painful and perhaps costly.” And without backing off that suggestion, it nonetheless went on to observe that there was a double standard in play in making him sell his business interests. It observed that “public-interest lawyers can move in and out of government without a peep of protest. Unlike liberals, Republicans like to work in the private economy.” By pointing out that liberals sup at the public trough rather than get into the hurly burly of the private economy, the paper seeks to make the fact that Mr. Trump has interests he must divest a badge of honor rather than an inconvenience.

It is unclear what Mr. Trump’s intentions with respect to divestment are. As he explained in his interview at the New York Times, “The president of the United States is allowed to have whatever conflicts he or she wants but I don’t want to do that.” During the interview he also observed that: “In theory I could run my business perfectly and then run the country perfectly.”

For those who have grown accustomed to learning of the innermost thoughts of president-elect Trump by means of the tweet, there is no reason to think that affairs of state will hold presidential pettiness at bay. His three tweets attacking the cast of the New York musical “Hamilton” are well known. The tweet, however, is more than an attack mechanism. It can impart information. Mr. Trump used a tweet to let his followers know that he is hard at work on Thanksgiving day trying to persuade Carrier Air conditioning company not to leave the United States.

During the campaign Mr. Trump often attacked what he described as the failing media. Under his inspired leadership the country may soon find that the tweet has replaced all other ways historically relied on by the public to obtain information. That would seem appropriate for a country that elected Mr. Trump as president. Christopher Brauchli can be emailed at brauchli.56@post.harvard.edu. Andy Cohen Reveals Skin Cancer Diagnosis On ‘Live With Kelly’

Andy Cohen appeared alongside Kelly Ripa on “Live with Kelly” Friday morning and made a startling revelation about his health. The 48-year-old “Watch What Happens Live” host revealed that he was recently diagnosed with skin cancer after Ripa noticed an abnormal mark on his lip.

“I have to shout you out for something that you don’t know I’m going to shout you out for,” Cohen told Ripa on the morning show, explaining that he had this “black dot on his bottom lip” that she first noticed in April.

Although Cohen didn’t get it checked out right away, he told the audience that Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, were adamant that he go to a dermatologist.

“Finally, I did, and it was melanoma and they removed it and the whole thing, and I just want to thank you because you were so dogmatic,” he told Ripa. “And it’s all fine.”

Cohen, who just released a book, Superficial: More Adventures From the Andy Cohen Diaries, said that his diagnosis has changed his attitude toward sunbathing.

“I am tanorexic. I love the sun, I really do, but be careful,” he said. “And I, of course, never thought that that kind of thing would happen to me and it will change my relationship to the sun.”

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, according to cancer.org. It’s less common but more dangerous than basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers because it’s much more likely to spread to other parts of the body if not caught early.

The Trump Team Keeps Piling On Criticism Of Mitt Romney

It’s been quite a week for 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

After meeting with President-elect Donald Trump last weekend, Romney was riding high and thought to be one of the top picks for secretary of state in the incoming administration.

But since then, Trump supporters and surrogates ― and now even his campaign director ― have taken jabs at the former Massachusetts governor.

Kellyanne Conway joined the crowd on Thanksgiving, throwing shade at Romney with a duo of tweets:

Romney may fall short of the mark when it comes to loyalty. He was a strong critic of Trump throughout the election cycle. He called the New York City businessman a “phony” and denounced him and his “degradations” after a tape emerged in which Trump bragged about sexually assaulting women.

When conservative blogger and talk-radio host Erick Erickson said in response to Conway’s tweet that Romney would provide stability as secretary of state and be a “calming effect internationally,” Conway didn’t capitulate but she did praise the diversity of the Republican Party.

The Thanksgiving tweets follow questions from Trump surrogates about whether Romney should be given such a prominent position in the administration.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) questioned Romney’s loyalty on “Fox and Friends” Wednesday and expressed concern that the former nominee’s presidential aspirations might interfere with him working for a President Trump.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said in the same show that offering the position to Romney would be an insult to Trump supporters

Overcoming Self-Deception Can Be Crucial for Survival

Is it a therapist’s job to make the client feel better or see reality more accurately? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Irene Yancher, Psychotherapist & TechCrunch, NPR contributor, Liv Pyschotherapy, on Quora:

Self-deception serves a purpose. It addresses underlying needs, but with potentially short and unsatisfying results. Anyone who has believed they can quell hunger with a bag of chips, instead of a real dinner, knows the feeling – you may be temporarily full, but you’re not satisfied.

Helping clients understand and fulfill their needs in an enduring, satisfying way of making self-deception unnecessary. Thus, seeing reality and feeling better typically go hand-in-hand. But until self-deception’s function is addressed, the belief that a therapist can help someone see reality may itself be an illusion.

In 1997, the Heaven’s Gate cult showed the world just how tenacious self-deception can be. Thirty-nine members of the cult committed suicide because they were convinced that a spaceship would take their souls to heaven. A few days before their suicides, cult members purchased a $ 3,600 telescope, only to return it with claims of device faultiness.

Why did cult members commit suicide even after being presented with actual evidence that should have, in theory, discredited their beliefs? To understand the concept, it’s important to comprehend the nature of self-deception and why it takes root.

Self-deception gets a bad rap, but some self-deception is healthy. A toddler who feels Teddy is real is meeting a need for comfort and is not suffering as a result. Repressing painful truths, like aging and death, can be an adaptive way to cope with an otherwise overwhelming reality. However, the more severe the deception, the higher the cost.

The Heaven’s Gate cult members likely suffered great emotional pain before they ever joined the cult. The cult’s appeal was its ability to fulfill some crucial needs. The exact type of need was probably different for each person – perhaps a sense of meaning or unconditional love. It’s tough to trade in this fulfillment, even if it’s temporary, false, and ultimately harmful, for a reality that feels bleak.

In psychotherapy, I often work with clients who distort reality somewhere between the two aforementioned extremes. A patient with an eating disorder, for instance, may be convinced she is overweight. This fabricated reality enables her to focus on something within her control (weight). If she feels that her body is the only thing over which she has any control, the belief that she is overweight is serving an important purpose.

Although one may be tempted to show this client a BMI chart to prove she’s thin, the evidence is unlikely to be effective. Assuming the disorder is not life-threatening, I could instead help the client develop agency in other parts of her life. As we work together to satisfy the patient’s underlying needs, the need to control her weight will likely diminish, along with the illusion of being overweight.

There are many ways to help a client see reality. Sometimes this is done by directly questioning the client’s constricted view (e.g., “is there any other possible reason your friend didn’t confide in you?”). Other times, it’s not feasible or practical to directly challenge a belief. In these cases, psychotherapists can help clients understand their underlying needs. Then, they can work together to replace self-deception with a more adaptive, fulfilling alternative that’s rooted in reality.

How To Get Drunk The Healthy Way This Holiday Season

If I want to get drunk, but in as healthy a way as possible, what are the best beverages and strategies? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Greg Huang, Co-founder/CEO at drinkwel.com – the multivitamin for people who drink, on Quora:

Because of my company I’ve spent a lot of time learning about being healthier about including alcohol in my lifestyle. Here’s my top ten list for how to get drunk as healthily as possible:

  1. Avoid sugary mixers. Things like margarita mix, juice with high fructose corn syrup, and Red Bull are just as hard for your body to process as the alcohol itself. Not to mention, they’re bad for you. Try mixing your booze with water and fresh fruit juice (no sugar added). You’d be surprised what great drinks you can make without all that extra sugar.
  2. The clearer, the better. Vodka, gin, and light beer are much easier on your body (and lower in calories) than whiskey, bourbon, or red wine.
  3. Don’t mix. It’s hard on your stomach. It’s hard on your head. Mixing alcohol is never a good idea. Pick your drink of choice–and stick to it for the night. You’ll thank yourself the next day.
  4. Take a drinking break. Push yourself to go for an extended period (days, weeks, etc.) with no drinking at all. Your liver will appreciate the rest, and you might even see a decrease in your tolerance so you can drink less (and spend less!), but have just as much fun.
  5. Eat well the next day. If you feel hung over in the morning, try healthy breakfast options like eggs and fresh juice. Despite what you may have heard, greasy food won’t do anything to help you feel better the next day. There’s no such thing as “soaking” up the booze–your body has already processed the alcohol, and the grease will only leave you feeling more bloated. The best thing you can do for yourself is to eat foods that will help replenish the vitamins and minerals you’ve lost and put your body back on a healthy digestive cycle.
  6. Eat before you drink. Having a snack or a meal before your first beverage will help give your body the time it needs to process alcohol and aid in preventing nausea, headache, and an upset stomach. A little bit of starch or dairy goes a long way in coating your stomach lining and preparing your body for alcohol.
  7. Eat while you drink. We all get the drunk-munchies (and are guilty of downing pizza, or Jack in the Box or whatever else sounds delicious when you’re too drunk to think about calories). An excellent way to avoid these grievous choices, and help your body absorb the alcohol correctly, is to keep healthy snacks around while you’re drinking. That way, by the time you’re wasted, you’ll also be full.
  8. Drink water. Before, during, and after. Alcohol is a diuretic and causes dehydration. Have a glass of water in between drinks to keep yourself hydrated and help prevent those nasty dehydration side effects.
  9. Drink less. I know, I know, some people don’t want to hear this, but do yourself a favor, and try to have fewer drinks on those big nights out. Sometimes it’s just about saying no to that last shot of Patrón.
  10. Take your vitamins and minerals. Drinking depletes essential nutrients–make sure you’re feeding them to your system. It won’t do everything, but it will help.

PCOS Diet 210 Friendly Recipes: Low Glycemic Index Diabetic Friendly Low Saturated Fat Low Carb Low Calorie High Protein Cookbook

Until recently, diet was not thought of as an important adjunct in treatment. However, since the fairly recent discovery regarding the role insulin resistance plays in PCOS, many experts now believe that diet should be a part of the treatment plan. A sudden spike in blood sugar causes an increase in insulin. Chronically high insulin is a problem for women with PCOS, as insulin alters the hormonal balance in your body, and makes your metabolism unstable. Excessive insulin contributes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. Since high levels of insulin can cause a multitude of problems for women with PCOS, a better diet would be a low-glycemic index diet. This is a diet that includes foods or combinations of foods that do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar All the 210 recipes also include detailed information on calories, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, protein, fiber and sodium, as well as serving sizes.

Refugees In The U.S. Wonder If They’ll Still Have A Home In Trump’s America

ST. PAUL, Minnesota ― The Hasen children came home from school a few weeks ago telling their mother that their fellow Somali classmates were threatening to leave the country because they worried that Donald Trump, who had just won the election, wanted them out. Their mother, Nasra, said she was horrified and had no idea how to respond.

She and six of her eight children only just got here. They moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in May of this year as refugees who have been on the move, from Somalia through various parts of the Middle East, since 2007.

But her flight mode has yet again been activated since the man preparing to assume the highest office in the land has so vocally denigrated Muslims and refugees.

“Every place we have gone something bad has happened,” she said. “Now, we don’t know where to go.”

Hasen is one of many resettled refugees who have expressed astonishment, apprehension and confusion at this time of presidential transition in the U.S.

The Huffington Post also spoke with several Syrian refugees living in Clarkston, Georgia, about 40 minutes outside of Atlanta. None of those interviewed wished to go on the record with their names out of fear for the safety of family members still in the Middle East.

“Are they going to send me back to Bashar [al Assad]?”

One 65-year-old woman said she worries that if Trump enacts a ban on Muslim immigrants or makes changes to the refugee resettlement program, her family members awaiting resettlement approval won’t be able to join her here.

She’s particularly concerned about one of her sons stuck in Egypt whose child is disabled, she added. His family’s application for resettlement is pending as the vetting process, which usually takes between 18 and 24 months, is still underway.

Another man, here with his pregnant wife and young child, said he fears outright expulsion from the U.S. Would it be to his home country of Syria, he wondered, or to one of the many countries that people flee to, like Jordan or Turkey?

“Are they going to send me back to Bashar [al Assad]?” he said.

Not everyone, however, buys into the Trump hysteria.

A third refugee, who used to teach Arabic in Syria, said he doesn’t believe that Trump will follow through with what he pledged during the campaign. And besides, he said, there would be many legal obstacles.

“There is Congress, there is the Supreme Court and the American people,” he said. “They will not let him do all of this.”

He doubts that people ultimately want to see their country fall behind by 60 or 70 years. But if it really does happen, he said, “we are all in trouble.”

The Darbis, a Syrian refugee family of five that HuffPost has been following for more than a year, expressed similar doubts about Trump’s proclamations.

They all stayed up late on Nov. 8 to watch their first presidential election in the U.S. from their apartment in Jersey City, New Jersey, said Mohamed, the father.

He, like the professor in Clarkston, said he thinks that Trump won’t actually follow through on most of what he’s proposed.

But he did voice some concern about some of the people who Trump is adding to his Cabinet ― specifically future advisers, like Chris Kobach, who have advocated for a Muslim registry.

“Do you think it will actually happen?” he wondered.

He didn’t bother hiding his cynicism around the rise in acts of hate since the election, either.

“Trump is normalizing a lot of the hateful rhetoric out there already,” Mohamed said. “I feel like a lot of Americans now feel more comfortable saying hateful things.”

He and his wife, Amira, both said they felt at ease being in Jersey City because it’s so diverse. Mohamed hasn’t encountered any problems at work, he said, and his children’s teachers have assured the students that they have nothing to worry about.

Except that Nabiha, the eldest, was the victim of an anti-Muslim comment.

A handful of Hispanic students in her eighth-grade class told her that they were happy about Trump’s win.

“You guys are so bad,” they said to her, referencing Muslims.

The agencies that are responsible for resettling refugees say they’re just as confused as the refugees themselves but are focused on moving forward and helping people establish new lives.

“There’s just so much uncertainty, confusion and certainly anxiety around the future of immigrants and refugees in this country,” said Elizabeth Ross, the refugee communities coordinator at the International Institute of Minnesota, a local resettlement group.

The U.S. resettled a total of 84,995 refugees in the 2016 fiscal year, which ended in September, according to Refugee Processing Center statistics. Almost 10,000 have already been resettled since then.

The Obama administration pledged to increase the number of refugees brought into the U.S. earlier this year. Up to 110,000 refugees can be offered new lives in the 2017 fiscal year, up from 70,000 in 2015 and 85,000 in 2016.

What Trump will do to these quotas is anybody’s guess.

“Right now we’re operating under the assumption that all of our programs will continue, that the administration will not reverse such a significant commitment to refugee protection and resettlement,” said Mark Hetfield, CEO of HIAS, one of the nine national resettlement agencies. “But there’s plenty of cause for concern.”

One area of concern, he said, is the campaign to end Muslim immigration. “It would be a catastrophe in terms of the messages sent to religious minorities, in terms of how they will be treated when they get here,” he said.

A second is the amount of divisive rhetoric that the Trump campaign has enabled, he said, echoing Mohamed Darbi.

“It’s not just about what Trump might do,” he said. “A lot of people are now saying negative things about refugees and minorities. Refugees are even asking to be moved out of neighborhoods where we’ve placed them, but I don’t know where would be better.”

Despite the odds being stacked against them, both Hetfield and Ross stressed that the commitment to assisting refugees has never been stronger.

“As an agency we are here to help people not be so fearful and to be hopeful that there won’t be drastic changes,” Ross said. “Our mission is unchanged. We’re trying to keep things positive and not give into the fear.”

Hasen and her six children are heeding these calls and working to make the U.S. feel like their permanent home despite all of the uncertainty. Four of her daughters are picking up their education where they left off. All four have been placed in ninth grade, and they shared their dreams of going into fashion, law and business. Her son is enrolled in a GED program. For the first time in as long as she can remember, she said, she sleeps through the night.

She said she would love to start working and find her family a new apartment once a few more things fall into place. But first, she wants to learn to drive and has to help one daughter recover from a spinal operation.

This is America, we have to stand up together,” she said. “It’s difficult but we have to believe.”

Breaking Bread After The Election

As a certified meditation teacher, one of the fundamentals we pass on to our students is that sound is not a barrier to meditation.

In fact, before I lead our class each Sunday morning, I parrot the teaching with such frequency, that my students can often chime in word for word, repeating this fundamental, almost like a mantra.

Sounds, external are not a barrier. But what about the collective post election shouts inside each our minds and hearts after such a tumultuous election cycle? Can those get in the way of going to and staying in peace and silence?

Can the collective shrieks of mourning or gloating flying about on the energy patterns douse a meditator’s peaceful practice?

It’s all certainly side-lined my own practice this week. I, for one, have had a hard time turning it all off, when trying to find my center.

And this morning, I anticipated that my meditation students in Las Vegas would likely have the same difficulty.

So last night, with news reports of thousands protesting, and with my Facebook feed full of people calling “the other” stupid, bigoted, criminal, etc. etc. etc. I took my kids to a little sandwich shop to just get away from everything and focus on feeding the mouths of our three adopted children.

Soon, the answer to how I would lead people in to meditation came in the form of food.

There, on the shelf of Kneaders Bakery, was the answer: BREAD.

Growing up, I was taught about our individual “still, small voices” when times are tumultuous, and to always heed the whispers of the still, small voice.

My own still, small voice whispered: HELP THEM BREAK BREAD.

I resisted, at first, as my mind did the math of how many loaves I would buy, what kind of overage I’d have if nobody showed up to class, what I would do with the left over bread, what flavors I would even buy….

And then the whisper: HELP THEM BREAK BREAD.

Soon, I found myself loading my arms up with loaves of pumpkin bread and cranberry bread, paying for it all and stacking it in a bag, leaving the cashier to wonder what the Hell the guy who tells the evening news every night was going to do with so many loaves of bread.

I bought them out of every loaf.

The next morning, while readying myself for the experience designed to clear a path where we could all go to silence, I really didn’t know what I would say, or how the whole thing would come together. I simply loaded up paper plates, a knife to cut the bread, and napkins.

BREAD IN A YOGA STUDIO? This is nuts.

Kids and hubby loaded in the car, we were off, looking like a gay, hippy commune of bread people.

Leaving the garage, I looked at the clock to note that I had to really speed to get to class on time, and calculated my right turn, my left turn, the lights I would wait for, the next right, the curvy road ahead and the right turn in to the yoga studio parking lot.

Would we make it…with all this damned pumpkin and cranberry bread?

After my right and left turn, after the series of lights, after the next left turn…I sped past a man and woman walking alone on a sidewalk.

He, a striking man with coal black hair. She, with piercing eyes, wearing a Hijab.

I sped right on by, noting them, wondering what their thoughts were on this morning…determined to not be late to class.

And again, that still, small voice persisted about breaking bread in our world.

This time, the universe was shouting, as I hit the brakes, and began backing up our bread wagon, causing fear to creep up in the eyes of the people I had just passed.

“What are you doing?”

My husband asked the question, barely able to finish before I answered:

“I’m going to practice what I’m about to preach.”

The man and woman alone on the sidewalk slowed and looked at me like some sort of nut, running towards them with a loaf of pumpkin bread.

Once in front of them, out of breath, I offered the most inarticulate greeting I’ve ever offered, followed by:

“I just want you to know, I love you and I wanted to break bread with you this morning.”

They were stunned.

“Thank you sir,” was all they spoke, before I turned, to get back in to our SUV and once again on our journey to the yoga studio.

The remaining moments in the car were spent explaining to our twins, 8 and our daughter, 4, why I broke bread with this pair in particular.

“How do you know they even like pumpkin bread?” My son, Asher asked.

“Hell, I don’t know Ash,” was all I could offer.

Maybe they didn’t. Maybe they don’t. Maybe they were creeped out by the running bread man.

But I was changed and had a measure of peace for the interaction.

Maybe the change inside me was all that mattered.

In the yoga studio, I asked our students to sit in a circle.

Usually, I let them come in and sit wherever, and however they want without imposing anything on them.

“Today, I just don’t know to do anything but have us form a circle.”

From the back, a woman could see what I was up to and pumped her fist:

“YES! YES!”

I turned on some music, randomly from my play list and wouldn’t you know it? Snatum Kaur’s “WE ARE THE PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE OF LOVE” began to play.

“LET US PEOPLE, BE LOVE TODAY, LOVE TODAY, LOVE TODAY, LOVE TODAY….”

I began:

“Sometimes before we meditate, we need to prepare the space, prepare our bodies, prepare our minds. There’s a lot going on outside these windows and walls my friends, and I want to share with you something I read that is attributed to Lao Tzu: “If we want peace in our world, we must first have peace between nations. If we are to have peace between nations, we must first have peace in our cities. If we want peace in our cities, we must first have peace in our neighborhoods. If we want peace in our neighborhoods, we must first have peace in our homes. If we want peace in our homes, we must first have peace in our families. If we want peace in our families, we must first have peace in our hearts.” That’s why I believe the most holistic approach to world peace, is through peace in the individual heart. My friends, I’m going to serve you today before we meditate, hoping that we can break bread with one another.”

I then asked each student to stand, and offer their name before approaching with a paper plate to collect their bread.

I made it a game, asking the rest of the class to guess if that student was a pumpkin or a cranberry type.

“My name is Kathie and I am a _____”

The class yelled out: “Cranberry?”

“Nope…pumpkin.”

In unison, everyone began to laugh at having missed the guess.

I thought: “Laughter. Lightness. Good! Connection.”

Up Kathie came….to get a slice of pumpkin bread.

By the time 33 people had spoken their names, and the rest of us had had a shot at which type of bread the person would want….it was clear that most of the time, our guesses about a person’s tastes were wrong.

But we ALL loved bread. And when the exercise was over, we all BROKE BREAD.

The room was clear of all of the “stuff” we’ve all been carrying around this week, and we enjoyed a deep, meaningful METTA meditation before listlessly drifting in to 15 minutes of utter, healing silence.

When the silence was over, I encouraged everyone to slowly open their eyes. Usually, class over, this is the time when people get up, begin their folding or rolling of mats, and talk again.

Today, they opened their eyes and just remained silent. Profoundly silent, as if trying to hold on to the feeling in the room for just a little bit longer.

So, I took the opportunity to offer to them the same challenge I offer those who will read this post.

“This week, aside from your morning and your afternoon 20 minute meditations, I challenge you to make or buy a loaf of bread, and knock on someone’s door to give it away.”

This week, in the frenetic beauty of the Las Vegas Valley, I trust that 33 families will find their way to their neighbor’s homes, carrying bread and the echo of the Metta meditation in their hearts.

MAY YOU BE WELL. MAY YOU BE HAPPY. MAY YOU BE FREE FROM SUFFERING AND THE CAUSES OF SUFFERING. MAY YOU KNOW PEACE.

May we all find a little peace, and may it start, with following the still, small voice, and a warm loaf of bread.

I offer this to you this week without ANY political expression whatsoever, and only with a prayer that our world will become breakers of bread once again.

A Betraying Breath : Living In The Uncertainty Of A Chronic Illness

All it takes is but a single breath for life to become so very real. In a single breath the heaviness of life and its fragility can pour into the depths of the soul. In a single breath lives a reality that is unchangeable, unfair, and heartbreaking. Within a single breath lives my very truth from which I so often times am on a quest to outrun. A truth that every breath I am given does not come without cost or heartache. A truth that is blended amidst quiet embers of fear waiting to ignite into a consuming blaze – waiting silently to steal that very breath and this life I love.

Betrayal in a Single Breath
Without conscious thought I take a breath and without a second thought give it back to the world. I take another. But this one is familiarly different.

I feel a catch as the air pours into my lungs and I grip onto the very breath that knowingly has given me this moment. My mouth fills with a taste I’ve tried to erase from my mind. My heart sinks and every breath I’ve taken for granted suddenly finds its weight and meaning within my chest. As I rush to the bathroom I already know within that single breath lies the truth I wish I could extinguish. The bright white porcelain of my sink a glaring contrast next to the truth of this life with cystic fibrosis – a truth painted in the most vibrant and unforgettable color of red. The color of blood.

As I clench the sides of the sink with my fingers, a flood of past memories surge through my body. A million thoughts run through my mind and with each breath comes a familiar burning in my throat and the desperate unanswerable questions that ceaselessly accompany this life with CF. I look up and catch my reflection in the mirror – only to be met by the deafening pleas of heartache present in my eyes. The heartache that dwells within the unassuming beauty of the season of Fall. The heartache I know all too well from past Novembers. The heartache that solely belongs to the feeling that my own body is betraying me and all I am. A heartache and betrayal that would only deepen as the episodes of coughing up blood would persist through the week.

2016-11-15-1479188095-8568524-IMG_20161114_123032.jpg

Ceaseless Hope
But in that heartache and betrayal also lies an undeniable truth and the reminder of the gift that is alive in every single breath that I am given. Within that heartache and betrayal shines the fragility of life and a truth from which I will never be able to hide. In that heartache lies a reminder of all I’ve been through, what it means to truly live, and a truth built upon unyielding hope. But most of all, it is a reminder that CF is fused to every breath that gives me life. So, with my pleading eyes I stare back at myself in the mirror and whisper the words, “just one breath at a time.” I cannot change this life with CF but what I can do is graciously take every breath as it comes to me – knowing it can all change in a single breath. So, I wait for this November to pass while embracing this season of Fall – breathing into every single breath a ceaseless hope that may smother the smoldering embers of fear caused by CF.

I take this life as it comes to me – one beautiful breath at a time. For within this single breath lies not only heartache caused by CF but the culmination of every beautiful moment, every burst of life-giving laughter, every loving embrace, and an immeasurable gratitude for it all. Within this single breath is this life lived beyond all odds – drenched in uncertainty, relentless hope, and endless beauty. I have learned through each season and through past Novembers to take each breath as it may come – clinging to an uncompromising gratitude for every breath that sustains me and ceaselessly believing in the hope of tomorrow.
